I ran a 10 mile race in Cardiff in the mid 80's. Everyone was sent the wrong way at some point during the race. I remember seeing Steve Jones and a couple of lead runners realising the race had been ruined making chicken noises and flapping their arms as they ran through a park.
I was just getting into running at this time and remember reading about all this in 'Marathon and Distance runner' magazine! Steve was a great runner and an inspiration, but I remember thinking ''not a marathon runner yet??!'. He has just broken the world record, and did not consider himself a marathon runner. This was his big career mistake, and why he never won any medals. Charlie Spedding, although a lesser talent, was smarter.
