The ominous quality comes from the 1/2 step (I think) movements up/down - plus the increasing volume of the orchestra is menacing. The menace in Sweeney Todd is in the music when it isn't in the scenes. ...people say "Stalker", and they say it because the music puts the menace in his love song. What should be reassuring - steadfast determination to free her - sounds like it could turn on a dime to a brand new prison...its' in the melody and harmony.

Victor Garber doesn't get it as much beautiful and wrong at the same time, I think he's voice is just too strong. I like the more innocent tenor version, where you really get the feeling of something wonderful, yet so wrong by an innocent person.

I love the way this song sounds much better with a baritone singer. Though the man who portrayed him in the movie was great, tenors are slowly beginning to annoy me. There are just SOOO many tenor roles and songs. It's overbearing. Lol.
