That's the way I remember how the "Daylight" looked... In fact all the steam engine trains looked the same... Just white steam coming out of the stack... From my home, a mile away up on the hill, all I could see was the "white" steam, over the top of all the prune orchards that lined the
First off, I just surfed into these fabulous vids by happenstance tonite, and have got to say hats off to Skip, for this is some incredible footage. I'm a hardcore tornado / stormchaser, and I know firsthand how darn tough it is to film something while it's moving.
Anyhow, I was wondering, the crews that are on these steam runs, are they super-old timers that were just starting their careers when steam faded out...and how much work is it to be an engineer on a run like this? See my next entry
@naderchaser (2nd of 2 posts) Regarding the level of work on a steamer vs an diesel engine of today..what would be the biggest difference in the amount of actual work while the train is running? Incidentally, I'm told that LAST remaining standing water tank for steam engines is about 30 mi. up the road from me in Picacho, Arizona. You can see it from I-10....on the east side of the fwy. Anybody know if this is true. It's owned by S. Pacific. Thank you- Joel in Tucson
It's a shame these classic steamers don't come through Central Florida. The only real classic steamer I've seen is the one that sits on the siding at the Church Street Station, and it's been there for almost twenty years.
Henry Flagler was a pioneer in his day. They actually do have one of his business rail cars from the Pullman company at the Whitehall house museum in Palm Beach, FL. They've done a marvelous job restoring it, but unfortunately, I don't have a video of that as it's been a few years since I was last down there.
TrainFestival 2009 is Americas Largest Celebration of Railroading and will include 8 steam locomotives under steam, This family event is being held as a fund raiser to keep operating Pere Marquette steam locomotive no. 1225. This locomotive owned by the Steam Railroading Institute of Owosso, MI is due for FRA re-certification in 2010. This locomotive is best known as the steam locomotive portrayed in the animated movie The Polar Express.
Once again Skip I must say you have some of the best steam pacing videos out there. You've definatly covered western steam as good as anybody out there and I thank you for doing so.
