SCH 40 pvc is pretty good stuff. i use it in mine and its way good. your guys's barrel can be like two feet longer since your chamber is so big and it'll go way further. all that flame you guys see comin out of the barrel could be used to propel the potato further

Is the drain pipe (a black, cheap PVC pipe) durable? Others says that drain pipe is brittle and weak and too dangerous to use...I plan to make spud cannon throughout of it because I have insufficient money to buy ABS PVC. Please reply.

never use cheap pvc pipe. it seriously will explode. the things you've probably heard about them exploding are not lies, it really does happen. you want to buy schedule 40 or 80 pvc pipe to make a safe gun.

You should not use ABS either people say that it ruptures instead of exploding; but the truth is it explodes into several million little pieces that will get lodged in you ans anyone around you.

I personally like to use ABS. It is not pressure rated, but it is more flexible than PVC, so it has less chance of exploding.

what do you use for propellant we used to use deoderant in our smaller sized one and we were shootin atleast 500 yards. but ours is the same size as urs and it wont launch and eveything else on the gun works cuz its just a scale up from the old one.???

i like to take a simple rubber bouncy ball and wrap duct tape around it so it fit into the barrel and make it a deadly projectile

To get the projectile to go further you will need a BIG combustion chamber ( Like theirs) and use more spray

The spud gun is essentially a combustion engine.

In order to get the best performance out of your gun, you need to get the correct ratios.

The optimum chamber to barrel ratio is 1.5:1. This means that the chamber's volume should be one and a half times the volume of the barrel.

So, here is an example which will give you great performance;

Chamber: 10" of 4" or 14" of 3" Sch. 40 PVC

Barrel: 36" of 1.5" Sch. 40 PVC

you just take 3 inch pvc and a a colmen grill ignitor and then you take 2 dry wall screws and screw them into the chamber about 2-3 cm apart and then attach the colmen grill ignitor

it's not "how much", it's all about the mixture of fuel (spray) and oxygen.

the length doesn't matter much, but bigger chamber generally means more potential for power.

yeah, and i made one but out of atleast 20 shots, only two have worked well, is there some sort of formula you can use to work out amount of propellant to use ? might seem a bit odd but i think thats what am guna hav to try use :P

spray enough so the inside of the chamber is foggy. then, make sure wave your hand around the outside the mix the oxygen with the fuel. you might see it clear up a bit, but it's alright. it's exactly what you want.

don't let the fuel sit for too long inside the chamber. it'll stick the the sides, making it wet and screwing everything up. always keep your chamber nice and dry.

this should solve the problem, or at make it work more often.

More stuff? Fuel? Too much fuel would make it rich, you need an equal balance of air and fuel. Also, with a long chamber, the combustion takes place in front and creates a low pressure area in the back, decreasing power... Little bit of fuel and air is all it takes... Shit, there is a product sold at supermarkets called "FDS" female deodorant spray which contains no glue like that of hairspray, that way the chamber wont become gummy with burnt glue...

the proportions are way off on that, for the size of that combustion chamber the barrel needs to be at least twice the length. the potato isnt making full use of the fuel. i have had extremely good results with a 1:1.448 C:B ratio.
