He had a hyperthyroid condition, hence the constant sweating and heat intolerance. The man was always on fire so to speak. You see it often when he is on talk shows he asks (if the airconditioner) "is up all the way?". I suffer the same thing and he turned his curse into a blessing - a true inspiration.
I did this interview...he was sick and sweating and did NOT want to sit down with about 30 people for 5 minutes each...I actually perked him up..you are on a clock.you cant let the subject loose..this was not intended to be run without edit...you would pck 15 secs here and there...so enjoy this brilliant guy...but not an easy man
@askjimmycarter Thanks for sharing this. People are people. And the gift he gave and had so many laugh is a blessing. Yeah, he was making money. But really, at a certain point, money really isn't what it's all about. Like he said, "It was his second love". And that is what it takes to be successful. And I'm sure it wasn't "Easy Money". what we see on camera is such a fraction of what it takes to make a production. and many are sooo ignorant of this it's almost insulting. thanks again.
The most amazing and quite misunstood concept is that most of the great comedians that have passed, never considered themselves great. Dangerfield, Farley, even Pryor never thought they were anything special, but they truely were, and they will give us many funny moments forever. Thank you.
When he was asked how Hawaii was he said "How could it have been fun? I was with me." I think that sums up a lot of this attitude. I still love you though Rodney, he is like the Dr. Dre of comedians haha.
Wow I have never seen him like this ever...incredibly candid and yet hints at darkness under the humour! It's almost scary when a comedian doesn't smile or laugh! Like this!
if rodney was born 20 years later, he woulda been more hilarious, coulda been apart of that whole Carlin, pryor era, and he would maybe still be around today. i just wish his career was a lot longer.
kind of makes me sad watching all these comedians I grew up watching, I remember the morning John Candy died, I was 13, that was a sad day, then we lost Dangerfield, and just recently Carlin... Farley before he'd even reached his prime... these guys are unequaled greats from comedies greatest era...
yeah casting him was a stroke of genius. I think that scene which was done as a sitcom with a laughter track was the most powerful scene I've ever watched.
Rodney was the best! It's too bad so little of his total standup routine made it to film. I only know of one - it's on the No Respect 3 DVD set. Anyone seen any others? Thanks for this interview.
Dangerfield was your typical tortured genius. Many of his close comic friends said he completely shut off in his private moments, yet when he was in front of an audience he came to life. Much like Carson.
You might be a MORON if......you have no idea what YOU are talking about.....the regular questions werent working with interviews before this one....tried this technique and it worked...he talked...a LOT more than he was with anyone this day....so think before thy speaks on things ye know nothing about....:)
This guy know NOTHING about Rodney. A great interviewer at least knows something, but whoever did this interview never looked up any facts on Rodney. He's being hit with insulting questions especially in the beginning of the interview. This looks to be 1986-87.
He seems very tense for some reason. I love this guy, I never saw him like that, so matter of fact you know? But sure he's just human, and was one of the best. I talked to Rob Schneider about him (yeah, I really did) and he said the same, that he was a great guy.
Something about his mannerisms reminds me of Gene Simmons for some reason. Gene made more money, but Rodney was one of the funniest people who ever lived.
Yeah, that Rodney... The perfect face for a horrid film. No respect, yeah he gets no respect. Even as a kid his yoyo didn't even come back to him. I tell you want... If it weren't for pick pockets, he would have gotten no action at all...
Rodney was really a great man. In interviews you could tell that he had a great mind that unluckily didn't get shared with the world enough. I respect him very much and wish the best for his family, I wish I could have had the chance to meet him.
A rare look at Rodney the man...not the comedian. I did not know him, the man, but I will say this...he was the King of the set up and the surprise twist. Never offended anyone, other than his wife, doctor...."Was my wife a screamer...only when I walked in on her!". Gave us the best gift...laughter.
I'm a comedian and I really enjoyed this
