I have now owned this model radio over two years now and I have done this same thing with the ISS. The reason for keeping the squelch open is because the signal is so low from the satellite that you must keep it open so it can hear every bit of faint data from the satellites beacon. If it doesn't hear all of it then it will be an error and won't register at all. Thanks for the videoSQ1BHQ, it peak my interest enough to go out and find out how to do it on my own. 73's KE5JPS.
I wish that someone would have explained what they were doing and why. I have this radio on order and it would have been of some benefit had things been explained so I would understand what why things were being done.
the tnc does not need the squelch open
