The plastic holds the deer hair fibers back out of the way so that a neat head can be formed and the fly can be finished with a whip finish. Without it, you will have to fight the fibers to keep from binding them down with the additional wraps of thread. The slit in the plastic allows it to be removed easily after you are finished tying in behind the hook eye.

Better Bass bug tying info than other. Audio though leaves much to be desired. Nice fly
