@Neutrinoghost The engine is the same as the ones on the wings. The engine is inside of that hole you see poking out of the tail...the exhaust is basically at the very back of the plane. It's a design called the S-duct. The Boeing 727 is designed the same way with regards to the tail-engine.
@loaferguy73 This IS a RB211-524 engine as it features the short exhaust cone, vs regular "long" exhaust cone seen on the -22B. Many early Tristars were retrofitted with the later -524 Rollers engines.
And I thought I liked 777 engine sounds ? Nothing beats RB211-524s ! The magic starts at 0:37, pure pleasure ! I remember watching TAP and Royal Jordanian Tristar 500s starting up at Geneva airport 20-25 years ago : that deep rumble (fuel being ignited, right ?) would pull tears from my kids eyes. Good memories, such a missed period.
Starting a turbine is not like cranking your car. You need to spin it up to a very high RPM before the fuel will ignite and the flame will be self sustinded. Earlier turbine engines required ground power to do it. Now they have a small turbines called APUs that can be started using the onboard batteries and when started, it will supply enough power to start one of the main engines. Once one of the main engines is started, it suppies enough power to start other engines.
Is the rear engine the same as the two on the wings? And how is the rear engine mounted, i.e exactly where is is located? Thanks in advance.

To save money they use old chips oil for engine start :-)

@biggerbi This is not a -524, its a 22b that on the -1/100. Its a bit more harmonious than the 524!

The L-1011 has always had a signature sound, to my recollection. To this day, I can tell when one flies over my house.
