  • Thanks for posting this.... love the story about how Gus had pawned his banjo to pay his heating bill just before this became a # 1 hit for The RooftopSingers, giving Gus a new start at 78! Gives me hope :-)

    Greetings from Australia!!!

    Ross

  • @rosslavel Thanks Ross !

I do my best to keep the oldies alive !

Ya, to pawn an instrument to pay a bill, is known to me, cause, I was hitch-hiking in Great Britain in the sixties. Me and my git. but when I arrived home, I had nothing in my pocket, so I pawned my git. "Angelica", which had helped me to finance the trip, singing in the streets.

Of course, I payed the loan and I still have "her", as my best git. ( "She" is on some clips I've uploaded.)

    Good comment !

    Peace Brother !

    Urban

  • I didn't know anything about the origins of this song until I saw a documentary about banjo music in the US on PBS last night. Lo and behold, I found it here on youtube—thanks for posting it!

  • @Citizen110 Hi, If you can't find an original Blues or Gospel, just try me !

  • How cool! I had no idea this song was so old! I was familiar with a couple of versions from the 1960s!

  • @snicky58 Hi Snicky !

Many of the old Blues Songs have been "stolen", OK, covered, but nobody knows the origin.

I'm here on YT to present the originals and Keep The Old Blues Alive !

  • Put this on my ipod. Everyone at my high school thinks I'm weird for listening to stuff like this even though I listen to almost everything. Great song. Great band.

    Thanks pal.

  • @MuffinManTF You are not weird for listening. You have a good taste in Music Man !

Tell your friends listen to the true Music, The Blues. And I'm glad you have the song in your ipod. Me myself have Mr Sonny Boy Williamsson, the good harp-player, as a calling signal in my cell phone. I'm not weird. People are ! *smile*

    Peace Brother !

    Urban

  • Just finished subscribing, Bro - Twinkle On! I would love to find that magazine article, too. On and Upward!

  • I remember when the Rooftop Singers' cover came out, there was an article in Time about Gus Cannon finally getting recognition. I thought, Gee, that's odd, one song out ot a million, I wonder why? Gotta look it up......

  • @jollywally001 Well, you are right ! The old originals were/are forgotten, so that's why I have my channel to Keep The Old Blues Alive.

Thanks to You, it is !

Thank you for the comment and listening !

    Peace Brother !

  • SKIFFLE? ARE YOU SURE BRO?

  • @buddyeagle No, I'm not sure, but as I grow up in the fifties skiffle was popular and I have a feeling the sound comes from the old Jug Bands ?

Thanks for the comment and listening !

    Peace Bro !

    Urban

  • @kickingmule To my ears I'm hearing skiffle, bluegrass, and yes even early rock. That's just me, tho. :)

  • @ModGirl1967 Ya, I agree ! Its a very early "popular" Music recorded 1929 ! So, I think its nothing new under Sun ?

Yes, its also true I just Love Original Music in different shapes and forms.

Thanks for the comment and listening !

    Peace !

    Urban

  • @Vaga365 Ya, you know, Gus Cannon is always to be trusted and I think this recording is the best, as far as the well-known song "Walk Right In" concern.

Thanks for the comment and listening !

    Peace Brother !

    Urban

  • excellent. The rooftop singers version was the first single I bought. I had no idea it was an old song.

There's a well rehearsed theory that it was the british blues revival in the sixties (Stones / Bluesbreakers ec.) who 'saved' the old blues men who were totally 'unknown' in their home country. Suddenly they were getting money for their work.

The rooftop singers were catching on too, I guess.

  • Yes, You are so right !

Thanks to the British Blues in the sixties and of course "The American Folk Blues Festivals" touring in Europe at the time beeing.

We all got exited about the Blues.

I'm one and I really hope there are more !

So, Thanks for a good comment and listening !

    Urban

  • whooowheee! Dat was some mighty fine 'a pickin and 'a singin!

  • Thanks !

You can always trust in Gus Cannon's Jugband !

    Peace Brother !

    Urban

  • j'aime ste style de music la ...... I like this style of music .... yyyyhhhhaaaa !!!!!!!!

  • yyyyhhaaa !!!! .......

  • Thanks,

Just Walk Right In, you are always welcome !

    Peace !

    Urban

  • Cannon's Jug Stompers were such bunch of luantics...I mean I'm pretty sure the different singers here aren't even singing in the same key...which is why it is awesome.

I always preferred them to the Memphis Jug Band who always seemed a bit too clean to me...

  • Right key or not ?

I think the Key is, they all don't sing in the right key, as you say !

That makes the difference and sound !!!

    Peace Brother

    and

Thanks for the comment and listening !

    Urban,

    The Kicking Mule

  • i love this song - especially this version. so pure

Just Walk Right In !!! You are welcome ! *smile*

Thanks for the comment and listening !

    PEACE and Take Care !

    Urban

  • Fantastic to see this on Youtube. The music of this era, such as this, was the birth of every strand of 'popular' music that we know of today, and Gus was one of the greatest pioneers. He will never be forgotten.

  • You are right John. It all started with the Blues, Gospel and other forms of US country music.

That's the original sound and that's the sound I prefer, that's why I try to Keep The Old Blues Alive ! And upload from my collection.

Thanks for the comment and listening.

    Peace Brother !

  • definately, some goodtime feel good music. rock on.

  • Just Walk Right In and you have that old good music on my channel.

Thanks for the comment and listening.

  • This makes me want to get into my 20's Ford and really open up the throttle...letting the breeze catch my hair while roaring down the road.

  • Let's go together !

Do you give me a ride in your Ford ?

    Peace Brother !

    Walk Right In !

  • Outstanding!! This is sooo real,. music history and really rocks. Wandering Arkansas cotton fields as a child in 1955 I was blessed to hear this pure American sound. Thank you kickingmule

  • I'm glad you like it, cause I'm on Youtube, just to keep the Oldies alive concerning Blues and Gospel.

Where I get my old stuff from ?

I got a collection when my dear Grandpa collector died and I've continued to collect ever since then. It was in the sixties.

You know better than me, but I think Gus Cannon is representative to the Real American Sound.

You know, as a Swede, it's hard sometimes, but I don't care.

    I follow my feelings !!!

    Thanks forthe comment and listening.

    Peace !

    Urban

You have a good taste in music.*smile*

    Peace Brother.

    Urban

  • The Rooftop Singers had a hit with this song in the early 60's. At least someone had the decency to track Gus Cannon down, who was in his 80's at the time and living in Memphis, and secured the royalties for him.

  • Very good comment Mike and I'm very thankful for all information you tell me and others !

    Keep It Up !

  • i thought i had commented on this one?? Oh goodness! sorry about that Urban. But THANK YOU!!! This is one of my favorite songs. Im sorry- I sent the vid to friends but i guess i forgot to say how much i love it. Amazing little band. 5 big ***** and hug!

  • Please, don't excuse yourself.

The song was recorded 80 years ago and I guess it will be on my channel, another 80 years from now, so you have all the time in the world to comment it !

But sorry to say, I'm not around then, *smile* !

    Peace Sister !

    Stay Cool !

  • way ahead of its time if you think about the music from that era

  • Ya, you are right. Many have covered this one and it also remind me of the Skiffle soumd in the 50:th.

    Thanks Brother.

    Urban

  • Thanks Jay ! We keep on walkin', right into the Blues as usual !

    Peace Brother !

    Urban

  • 1929, sounds great. Some group (I forget their name just now) had a hit in US with this back in the 60's and I always wanted to hear an earlier version of it. Thanks.

Is this, to your knowlege, the earliest recorded version?

  • Vinnie, to my knowledge many claim this is the very first recording. But like everthing else in the old Blues, you have to take it with some scepsis. Perhaps they were the first to have a hit, but I think it's the very first recording !

    Peace Brother !

  • Thanks Brother Urban.

  • Love this! I do like a good vocal and this guy (I assume Gus Cannon) has it!

    Thanks Urban

  • Gus Cannon was one of the best Jug Band leaders. He was a man of perfection and let his bands rehears, until he was satiesfied and then recorded.

On this he sings along with Hoses Woods, a band member this time.

    Thanks Brother !

  • I was just going through some lp's this morning gathering stuff for my next batch of uploads and realised I have some of these guys songs. Not this one, but happy days none the less

You are always welcome, just Walk Right In, to my channel.*smile*

    Peace Brother !

  • Thanks, i never knew that song was that old.

  • I think this is the original and I have it on a 78:rpm.

    Peace !

    Urban

  • Originals never die. I think Gus Cannon and his Jug Stompers was the first to record this wellknown tune !

Thanlks for your comment and listening.

    Peace.

    Urban

  • Nice Urban Thx Bro!!!

  • Thanks, this one is a request, but I think it's a piece of History of the song. You know, so many versions, but I think this is the Original ?
