Thanks for posting this.... love the story about how Gus had pawned his banjo to pay his heating bill just before this became a # 1 hit for The RooftopSingers, giving Gus a new start at 78! Gives me hope :-)
Ya, to pawn an instrument to pay a bill, is known to me, cause, I was hitch-hiking in Great Britain in the sixties. Me and my git. but when I arrived home, I had nothing in my pocket, so I pawned my git. "Angelica", which had helped me to finance the trip, singing in the streets.
Of course, I payed the loan and I still have "her", as my best git. ( "She" is on some clips I've uploaded.)
I didn't know anything about the origins of this song until I saw a documentary about banjo music in the US on PBS last night. Lo and behold, I found it here on youtube—thanks for posting it!
@kickingmule Thanks for replying, Urban! I'm glad to have discovered what you're doing. I appreciate it. I love blues, and I always love learning more.
Hey kickingmule, thanks for this and for doing what you're doing! I agree with you about the skiffle, early rock etc feel to this.. these cats were layin' it down good! I love the Rooftop Singers version but this is a revelation, Thanks for sharing! Yo, Px :))
Wow...first time hearing this...I was obsessed with this song as done by The Rooftop Singers when it was first released...flat wore the grooves out on that record!
Put this on my ipod. Everyone at my high school thinks I'm weird for listening to stuff like this even though I listen to almost everything. Great song. Great band.
@MuffinManTF You are not weird for listening. You have a good taste in Music Man !
Tell your friends listen to the true Music, The Blues. And I'm glad you have the song in your ipod. Me myself have Mr Sonny Boy Williamsson, the good harp-player, as a calling signal in my cell phone. I'm not weird. People are ! *smile*
I remember when the Rooftop Singers' cover came out, there was an article in Time about Gus Cannon finally getting recognition. I thought, Gee, that's odd, one song out of a million, I wonder why? Gotta look it up......
I remember when the Rooftop Singers' cover came out, there was an article in Time about Gus Cannon finally getting recognition. I thought, Gee, that's odd, one song out ot a million, I wonder why? Gotta look it up......
@Vaga365 Ya, you know, Gus Cannon is always to be trusted and I think this recording is the best, as far as the well-known song "Walk Right In" concern.
excellent. The rooftop singers version was the first single I bought. I had no idea it was an old song.
There's a well rehearsed theory that it was the british blues revival in the sixties (Stones / Bluesbreakers ec.) who 'saved' the old blues men who were totally 'unknown' in their home country. Suddenly they were getting money for their work.
The rooftop singers were catching on too, I guess.
Cannon's Jug Stompers were such bunch of luantics...I mean I'm pretty sure the different singers here aren't even singing in the same key...which is why it is awesome.
I always preferred them to the Memphis Jug Band who always seemed a bit too clean to me...
Fantastic to see this on Youtube. The music of this era, such as this, was the birth of every strand of 'popular' music that we know of today, and Gus was one of the greatest pioneers. He will never be forgotten.
Outstanding!! This is sooo real,. music history and really rocks. Wandering Arkansas cotton fields as a child in 1955 I was blessed to hear this pure American sound. Thank you kickingmule
The Rooftop Singers had a hit with this song in the early 60's. At least someone had the decency to track Gus Cannon down, who was in his 80's at the time and living in Memphis, and secured the royalties for him.
i thought i had commented on this one?? Oh goodness! sorry about that Urban. But THANK YOU!!! This is one of my favorite songs. Im sorry- I sent the vid to friends but i guess i forgot to say how much i love it. Amazing little band. 5 big ***** and hug!

1929, sounds great. Some group (I forget their name just now) had a hit in US with this back in the 60's and I always wanted to hear an earlier version of it. Thanks.

Vinnie, to my knowledge many claim this is the very first recording. But like everthing else in the old Blues, you have to take it with some scepsis. Perhaps they were the first to have a hit, but I think it's the very first recording !
