At 9:19, you talked about the strap breaking. I live in Colorado and packed to the Rainbow HotSprings, and on the way out, I had the same break of the strap. Since I'd watched this video before going, I had a sewing kit and was able to fix it on the trail. Thanks for the great advice, but it does seem to be an ongoing issue. Thank-god for the sewing kit....my pack was at 80lbs-what a nightmare that would have been!
Bought this identical pack on ebay for myself and a brand new tioga 5500 for my wife after watching this review about a year ago. These are awesome packs. I'm happy I got them, especially considering they're not being sold presently. You were also right about the sawvivor, sog flash ll, cs recon scout, and so many other purchases. I'm not a TNP'er or even a subscriber but, you've made our family hiking trips more fun and safe due to reliable equiptment. Thank you.
Thanks man for yr reviews.I hiked 333mi on AT last summer using I- frame, wisht I'da hiked w/ Xframe. So using parts from 5 different garage-sale-bought Xframe packs I made a "one-of" MUTT pack : custom-fit,plenty of room,easier to ORGANIZE,pack&use&100% MORE COMFORTABLE CARRY than I-frame.Let em say"gay"to Xframes;I know they'd LOVE an Xframe's COMFORT carry if they tried it.Hillary frame/Alpenlite bag/CampTrails straps/CampWays belt/WildRiver back band . Wt: 3 1/2# X-cellent quality : USA !
@kabah088 my favorite backpacking tip! I take a road flare - it will light a fire in the rain, signal if you're lost, and ( I imagine) scare away a bear....just don't set the woods on fire!
i need a backpack that will fit a 23" diameter popup blind, the only thing i have found so far are the large alice pack, and the kelty cache hauler, any of you guys have any suggestions?
One procedure that should be mentioned here is this; When storing your hiking/trekking poles on a pack, search and rescue always recommends pointing the tips down. The reason is, they've found people often impale their neck and or face area in a fall of some significance as in tumbling. Not a bad idea to practice if you use trekking poles, especially if the tips are in any way pointed. Really enjoying this series of reviews on your S.Tioga. Wish I knew what my Kelty was, I just found, used.
One thing, though. I really, really wished you opened it up/unloaded it, and showed the inside of this pack. Yeah, you probably had it stuffed with clothes and what not to fill it out. I don't care if you had it filled with junk just to show what it looks like full.
On externals, you just take what you want and don't worry about weight. Internals are sexy though! My question is, Why do externals, after 75 years, still come with crappy 11 year old school children sized shoulder straps and hip belts? I don't blame the salesmen and catalogs for pushing internals. I blame the companies that make frame packs. Put good straps on externals and they could come back
@freewill51 I like to carry my Gen5 External to carry my snake gun to kill snakes I see alot of hostile snakes along the trail anymore. And they come in all sizes and colors, even YELLOW. Some snakes like to hisss a lot and aren't allowed in rooms.
Wouldn't you agree Freewill, Hey freewill, wouldn't you agree????
@hangemhigh2000 A rattler in its environment does a lot of good keeping down rodents. Other snakes also have their place in the environment, too, eating mostly insects and/or rodents. When I feel brave, I'll sometimes pick one up, (non-venomous, of course), and admire the beauty of their skin and agility. But I usually, let them be. Same with birds. I saw something on tv the other day that claims birds are responcible for eating at least half of all the insects on earth. So plant a tree.
I found one on Craigs List last week for 40 bucks!!! He bought it in 2002 and used it once for a 3 day trip.... near mint!!! Awesome review/ Huge fan.... U keep makin em and ill keep watchin em!!!!!
I just got this backpack off an internet auction. $100 with shipping and tax sounds like a pretty good deal. I guess now I should start the mods,
Thanks for the review nutnfancy! I feel like I made an informed choice rather than just buying something. I did check out about 100 backpacks before buying this one. The only other option I was considering was $375 dollars and I just can't get that to spend.
Hey, so I'm basically the definition of noob to the world of backpacking/hiking. I'm going with some friends of mine with a fairly large group on a hiking trip, for about a week. I doubt I'll be taking even 70 pounds. Does anyone with any real knowledge think that a pack of this type and size is too big?
70lbs i hope that is less than a 1/3 of your body weight. The best thing to do is make sure your not over weight with your pack. make sure your accounting for group gear too.
Its hard to define a size for your pack for you if i don't know where you are going and actives (I.E. hunting, fishing surveying, climbing) you have planed. that's what i would recommend between a 3500-4000 c.i. external frame or a 4000-5000 c.i. internal frame for general multipurpose back packing.
@whitenite007 Hey Whitenite007, Yes, a pack of this size for general backpacking is too large, but it is still a good pack. Quite a good pack, but when you can go into the woods with a 3000 to 3500 cu.i. pack for five days with only twenty lbs. of gear/food, (less water) there is a big trade off in comfort. I think this pack would be great for a hunting trip or short trip, but carrying too much weight is simply not as fun as twenty lbs or less.
so the super tioga is like 4900 or 4800 ci. and the tioga 5500 is 5500 ci. and there the same price. Whats the biggest commercial pack you can buy thats quality?
I was looking at External Frame packs and came across the Jansport Carson Tjq7 model. How does this look for a frame pack? Would it be good for extended hiking and all around great survival bag?
I just got my Super Tioga 4900 from Campmor for $150 shipping included. As of 4/27/09, they still have some. This model has a hydration port but lacks that odd access feature you pointed out. I loaded it up and it's very comfortable. Thanks for the vids. I almost bought the Kelty Redwing 6650 and I still might, but for now the Tioga is a better fit to my needs.
i have the tioga 5500 and it is amazing. the only colors are blue and red. which suck. but the pack makes up for the colors. external frame packs need to get some hipe. they are really truley the best.
Wish I had watched this video a few weeks ago before I went and bought my new pack. Might have to pick up an external frame pack. Thank you for using 2 sleeping pads, I'm going to use this as a reference for all of my friends who make fun of me for using more than one sleeping pad.
Hahah I was doing pushups while listening to this part of the review. I was nearing the end of the set, got through diamonds, wider, wider, wider and was on my "just 10 more" portion when you said 10:55 "a lot of people consider frame packs to be... gay". hahah I laughed and I fell into the floor. You ruined my set!
hey nutnfancy thanks for selling me on external packs; i got a Mountainsmith Master 3500cu external and am very happy with it, its amazing how much stuff goes into the pockets and straps outside you really dont need that much main compartment space, oh and it has like 6 huge pockets
I just saw this Mountainsmith Master myself, it appears to be an external frame pack made exclusively for the Dicks sporting goods chain, and is not listed in the Mountainsmith main inventory. I read your review anarky on Whiteblaze and I may go snag the Mountainsmith tommorrow now that I have done a little reading on it, thanks dude!
my Lincoln was in the garage every month for the first 8 months I owned it, after which I sold it off... would have been nice if the ceo wrote me a letter of apology.
I'm using an US Army Alice Pack, large and with a frame. For my purpose it fits quite good. Now, thanks to your videos I got tons of helpfull advices and ideas how to upgrade the pack ;)
Great video series Bro!! Tons of useful info for anyone going into the backcountry (or the sporting goods store).Anyone looking to buy a pack in the near future needs to watch these vids!!
