I was a little excited wathcing this because I am originally from Oakland, and I used to run miles of steep hills near Golf Links road and Merrit College (I think that was the name of the school; it sits atop some long, steep hills) every morning at abt. 4a.m. Hills can make you immortal. The goat and cattel noises were pretty funny, too.
Not only is the side and backwards running good for footwork. It also develops the hams, calves and gluts. With just normal forward running the emphasis is for the most part on the thighs. I use the variation often in my own road work.
