@Pyridoxinexx 55 use to be the speed limit on all highways from 1974 to 1987. they changed the rural highway speed limit to 65 in 1987. and in 1995 they ended the 55 speed limit nationally. they imposed the 55 speed limit during the oil embargo because cars seem to get better mileage at 55 mph then they do at 65+. there is still a big movement these days called "drive 55". its not because of an oil shortage, its aimed at the idea of preventing global warming.
