i brought a parakeet about 2 weeks from the store and he has 1 wing that doesnt look cliped and the other looks cliped way too bad and i think hes molted already but it didnt grow is it possible that it wont ever grow again please answer back
Wing clipping is for the safety of the bird. It is NOT equal to removing a human leg. Feathers do grow back. Its does not hurt the bird mentally or physically. With its wings clipped the bird has a better quality of life being able to get out of the cage without flying into walls or ceilings or accidentally out the door where it could be hit by a car or attacked by a cat among other things. Bird owners are dedicated to the health and happiness of their beloved bird.
@AwesomeAlexblake IMPORTANT - Do not remove the blood feather. Firmly squeeze the end of the broken blood quill until the the blood clots. This may take some minutes to occur. Removing the blood quill will cause massive bleeding.
I left 6 feathers on in the front, it was my first time clipping is that ok? Or should i cut more. I left about five or six in the back, he is fine and able to fly a little and dosent crash to the ground but want your opinion. Should i cut more next time? Thanks for posting this video :D
I have a question. I see a lot of birds that have... rough/broken tail feathers..
I was wondering... perhaps since they cannot fly and use it as a rotor or what ever flight purposed their tail is for, they dont recognize the importance of it.
SO... if they were allowed to fly, and found the importance of thier tail feathers, then perhaps they would take better care of it. I think the bird would be happier too and not pluck at it's feathers so rashly.
@xxjacobxx3 No, clipping a birds wing will not affect the way they "treat" their tail feathers. The most common cause of tail damage comes from wire climbing, both clipped and unclipped birds will frequently wire climb. Tail damage is usually caused in the environment. Feather plucking is a more complex matter and can be caused by a number of factors. We have seen many un-clipped aviary birds in our clinic that are chronic feather pluckers, so its impossible to pin the blame on wing clipping.
thank you for sharing this! i was always nervous about doing this procedure myself but after watching your video i feel confident enough to try. lets see how i do with my goffin!
It is totally wrong to clip a birds wings and very cruel. It may not hurt the bird physically, but sure does mentally. Why don't we cut off the legs of our dogs and cats (under anesthetic so not to hurt them). They then can not run out of the door and get lost, or run over by a car If people want a bird build it a large aviary and get it a partner and let them enjoy their flying about. It breaks my heart seeing birds in cages, clipped wings, no other birds for company.
Would this apply for any type of bird because I am thinking of getting a African grey and the breeder told me to let it learn to fly first and then when it is good at flying clip it's wings. So would this method apply for an African grey parrot. Please help me
hi, thanks for the video.. do you know how long it takes for a love birds feathers to grow back?.. i clipped them 4-5 months ago and still no sign of new feathers
Thank you so very much for your informative video. My vet taught this technique to me years ago. I only wish that those uneducated folks who continue to post how cruel it is to clip would watch your demonstration. I breed English Budgies, have pet Budgie, Blackcapped Conure & Eclectus hen.I can do the small ones but the parrot is a 2 person job. My vet uses cat nail clippers (?) to clip as close as possible so there are no nubs to irritate her which could tempt her to pluck.
Thank you so much for posting this video! You break down clipping wings so well that I now feel confident in clipping my cockatiels' tomorrow! Do you also have a beak and nail trimming video??
Yes Gentleman, it surprised us also! But this is a public space and different people have different opinions. We are simply sharing what 25 years in avian health has taught us with the hope that it will help others and their birds. Great to hear your postive feedback along with that of many others.
I just cliped my birds wings, and i watched lots of videos about it. This was by far the best without a doubt. Got the job done and the bird flies exactly like you said it would and he is so much easier to handle. Thank you.
TYSM! this really help me so much ,and I already did it the way u show it here ,I was about to buy a fly suit but now he seems happy and content my nanday conure "valentin" surprise me when he allow me to clip him whit out much of a fuzz ty ty!
You are a good artist!!! So, what I want to know, is there a way that u can clip the wings so they can fly, just not long distances? I'm talking like I call a birds name in it flies a few feet over to me. Please answer
@damlyn9 My parakeet, a light weight bird, needs all feathers clipped except for the 2 longest feathers. He can glide well and fly a foot or two off the floor. As the Dr. explained larger, heavier birds need less feathers clipped.
I thought this was a good video & the drawing provided quite a bit of info I have parakeets that need to have wings clipped due to the fact on occasion will get out & its terrible to watch them fly around into things due to them being scared & a couple of cocktails that when they are done working with you will start flying through house @ least they don't fly into anything . so I thought this video was really help full
Take notice of the way the bird is held. This is called the ‘universal bird hold’. This hold ensures your bird cannot ‘struggle’ and also allows a bird to be completely comfortable in your grip. If you keep birds it is important to be confident in this technique as it is also used when administering medication, in which case having full control over the bird is absolutely essential - there is no such thing as a ‘safety’ crop needle, it is only the technique that makes it safe!
This guy seems to know what he's doin, i'm definitely doing it to my chickens. Some people don't want there birds to get up at all, escpecially if they are chickens and they will eat your god damn vegetable garden. I might even clip straight across so they can't even glide.
i cut my parakeets wings exactly like you showed but it is still able to fly around the house with no problem

does it hurt when you clip the feathers? because i thought the little stalks are made of bone
gdiggle123 3 months ago
@gdiggle123 No the feather shaft is not made of bone and is completely free of nerves. It does not hurt the bird to clip feathers.
Vetafarm 3 months ago
can you cut the 6 primary feathers or you have to leave the top two on
starluv2 3 months ago
@starluv2 You dont have to leave any of the primary feathers, cutting the final two will still give you the same result.
