Good call on the music! Mr. Kaempfert (whom I admire, one of my guilty musical pleasures) and his tunes are always a good choice for any televisual downtime or pause, whether it be a "Technical Difficulties" moment or otherwise...!!!
@espectro2n .. This is an old thing that would appear on the T.V if something went wrong with what they were broadcasting.. They would play this picture while they tried to fix the problem..
I always thought is was funny that they used very "calming" music while the engineers were franticly working behind the scenes to get the show back on.
These test patterns remind me of the good ole days which shall never be again. Thanks to the internet we can go back in time and relive some of the good things.
@benblue3 The test patterns served a double purpose - they allowed technicians at the television station to make adjustments to be sure that image and audio transmission were proper, and they also helped viewers at home to adjust their television sets for the best picture and sound. This was before the days of Automatic Fine Tuning.
@Driuc0Sekoba because that was the way test patterns were back then, during the days of black and white tv. Most of them did have those. That was back before there was cable, and one had only about 4 stations to pick from, the `big 3' or a pbs station.
@Driuc0Sekoba If you are less than 25-30 years old, you probably don't know what I am talking about, but tvs use to have what were called vacuum tubes in them. It was by RCA in 1939 it was designed to be generated using a special tube called a monoscope, a CRT which had a metal plate target on which the pattern was printed. The black lines of the pattern would interrupt current flow as the pattern was scanned to provide the desired video output. These tubes could only handle B&W tvs,
@Echolyktuz because it gave the technicians a gray-scale picture and the feathers provided lots of linear features while the test pattern was still in view.

This reminds me of the old WNEW Channel 5 in NY. We were usually "treated" to at least one of these a day, usually after the film jammed in the telecine. It was this song or a real cheesy version of "Elenore Rigby". Once the cart that was playing the "Oh, Sh*t" music jammed, and they had to play a phonograph record, but they had it on the wrong speed (Talk about adding insult to injury...).
@aat2bd yes i remember that too. do you recall when the station would play "popcorn" by hot butter with the voice-over "we are experiencing technical difficulties. Please stand-by." i want THAT audio.

An ironic choice of a song for a video dedicated to technical difficulties, but it's a good one. ;)
