i'm an old school New Waver... i've always liked this song. always been i big fan of Vince Clark and all of his projects. and now after all these years getting to watch the video is really cool!
The song and its performers are great. In a manner of honors, we made a cover version of it, at the occasion of the 30th Anniversary of Mute Records. The initial track was transposed a tone higher to better suit a female voice. You can check the result out on Dataraperclub if you desire !
Vince Clarke has got to be the ultimate in underestimated talent. So much success with what appears to be so little effort, and yet every one around him becomes famous! Vince, you must want it this way? If not, then its about time you pointed out to all concerned that the success comes from you.
It never happens to most of us but we go with what we've got and hope for the best.! The ones we like do a runner and the ones we dont like stick to us like glue. Oh for an explanation of the female mind....
Shame this never project went beyond a one off single, maybe it worked out for the best that way for both artists in the end as a year later both had bigger success as a solo act and Erasure..
vice city stories i felt just like this cause i was alone and every one around me had simeone but now i got that special someone and is not letting go
Heard this a long long time ago on a rave tape. My father always said it was the Undertones but after catching a bit on the radio i went in search and found a group ive never heard of.....
Yes a very unique voice indeed. I remember the documentry in the late 80's that explained that whenever recording in the studio, Fergal would have someone(Usually a dwarf) squeezing his testicles but he could never replicate the sound live on stage and thus his career suffered due to it.
I knew this song when I was about five or six, but never thought anything of it. 26 years later, being 30, single and surrounded by happily married friends and women that aren't interested in me, this song suddenly speaks to me. It's like 'wow, I'm not alone in my thoughts.' Someone has written a song about it. Thank you, it's basically my life right now.
@hippyable fuck it no the best thing he can do is kill himself, apart from that go on these dating sites and find some fat desprate woman with a few kids to different dads whos game for anyone. Are you one of them?
@iamspeed I am a fat person either female or male it doesn't matter. who do you think you are. why don't you reply to me I'm not fuckin' desperate as you portray me to be. Good-Bye!
@Dutchotto08 I don´t know if it is the best song in history but one of the most romantic and emotional lyrics for sure... It is a song about so many love adventures you wanted to have but they were impossible for so many reasons. In my opinion, it is only possible to understand the whole meaning of this song when you are in your loneliness looking through your window, for example.
Wow, Amaaaaayzing..!! I was messing about on Wikipedia (like you do), when I somehow came on to ´The Assembly - Never never´. I knew instantly "I know that song". Played it on here, and after what? 25 years, I could still sing it word for word. What memories, what a song. Thankyou.
excellent song. It sounds like Vince wrote it for Yazoo - did Alison Moyet ever get to sing this song? I'd love to have heard this with her voice - it would have made a great follow up to Yazoo's swansong, Nobody's Diary.
I had this song on a Survival Sampler cassette that was eaten by the tape player many years ago...so happy to hear it again! What a lovely high tenor voice!
Thank you for posting this; I've never seen this before. I love DM, Yazoo, and Erasure, but seeing this helps confirm the importance of Eric Radcliffe on early Vince work.

Depeche Mode; Yazoo; Assembly and Erasure.
