Salieri was a very great and genial composer.

The legend between Mozart and Salieri has been created as personification of the reaction of German music against the hegemony of italian music and italian opera in '700.

Another legend in that sense was the notation by Mozart of Allegri's Miserere, after he heard a rendition of it (a fact never happened) as well as the superiority of Mozart to Muzio Clementi, who indeen, as composer and virtuoso for piano, was superior to Mozart.

I must agree. Mozart was indeed a genious but today he is overestimated. Salieri is shown as a mediocratic composer and this couldn't be further from the truth. Salieri was a great musician and the rivalry between Mozart and him is probably just another of the myths that surrounds Mozart's history. In fact, they were probably friends. The movie is awesome, but it has to be considered as a great fiction work, not as reliable version of Mozart's life.

Of course this movie doesn't stick to historic facts very well. That's because it's a movie and not a documentary. So don't take it so serious. Besides, what does Mozart have to do with German music? He was Austrian and lived and worked in Vienna. Anyways, I consider this movie to be a real masterpiece and wish there were more movies like that. It got eight oscars and deserved it. By the way, I don't think that Mozart could ever be overestimated. He was a milestone in music history, indeed.
