Just run some water through the machine without coffee in it, and see if it tastes bad. Although it might also be because it makes the water too hot. Coffee which has been boiled doesn't taste very well. The optimal brewing temperature is around just around 95°C (200°F).

Yes, a coffee machine can just make bad coffee no matter what grinds you put in it. A lot of times, it's a temperature thing - too hot or too cold can kill the taste in different ways. Or, if the filter isn't quite right - dripping too fast or too slow for over/under brew - that can kill it just as easily. #exbarista
