@hotstixx If you are supposed to enjoy philosophy fully, you should know how to read/speak Sanskrit, Greek, Latin, German, Italian and French (at least... I don't bother to refer to Arabic and Hebrew...). English is not enough. As you see French is child stuff... Take a course at the Alliance Française...
Oh God, Allah, Shiva or whoever is in charge up there, take me and give back Michel Foucault!! This world, humanity, desperately needs a man like that!
I am but a simple bicycle repair man. Please would someone explain in plain english what impact foucault has had outside of philosophy itself. By the way, I once straightened Lacan's handlebars.
americans are pragmatists..and we can see what kind of nightmare society they have produced..americans are not thinkers , they are policeman, using philosophy of pragmatism as a billy club..long live the Situationists!!!

Come on, people, the emperor has no clothes:
Foucault was just writing down his own schizophrenic associations. The man had no idea of real analytic philosophy.
Why generations of French students have to bow to a charlatan is very showing of the religious nature of it: It is locality what religion one has and if you read Foucault or not.
No, but you have to declare to use reason and logic in your arguments. If you say: anything goes and I just write down and teach what comes to my mind: that ain't philosophy but seducing your youthful audience with sophistry.
@hyperseauton You're attacking a straw man here. You'd be better off honestly declaring: I've never read any Foucault, nor do I know anything about perspectivism or philosophy in general. I suggest you to start with Nietzsche's 'uses and abuses of history for life'. There is (Wittgenstein precluded) nothing worthwhile in analytical (political) philosophy. Nietzsche made fun of Rawls' veil of ignorance, just like he did with Nozick's historically unfounded libertarianism.
@absinth1987 they are thinking inside a coherent system. Foucault was more of an author of fiction, than a philosopher.. his "insights" were highly idiosyncratic and more or less useless outside his universe. He interprets the world according to his experiences as an outcast (criminal, mentally ill, homosexual, sado masochist) and tries to persuade others to accept that view.. and he IS very seductive and good at manipulating facts.
@absinth1987 Besides, as far as I am aware of, Michel Foucault is not considered part of the analytic tradition. Michel Foucault is considered a Continental, Post-Structuralist…
@MalditoNihilista yeah, of course, so he is what we in Europe call a real philosopher, what the academics in the Anglo-Saxon world calls a obscurantist – as far as they understand philosophy as nothing else then pure positivst logic
@hyperseauton actually most of the big analytic philosophers of the day, people like John Searle, for example, respected Foucault. Foucault was familiar with Russell, Wittgenstein, Austen. I don't think his ideas are actually incompatible with analytic approaches at all and there have been interesting things written on the subject. Usually individuals who want to write bitchy smack-downs of a continental philosophers don't actually understand the ideas they are so glibly and smugly dismissing.
@absinth1987 Correction: Analytic philosophy is when a person just doesn't state a hypothesis and run away with it by drawing up theories based on it. But an analytic philosopher, like a scientist, takes the hypothesis and thoroughly applies the craft of logic to it to test whether it's VALID. Also: analytic philosophers have been known to draw up guidelines for others to follow when applying logic to their arguments.
@hyperseauton american students bow no less to their charlatans which includes all current philosophy and comparative literature professors in the US academia; oh yes, they also like to kiss ass to some people accross the seas, like Zizek Badiou, Nancy and all those bullshit idiots. They bullshit all the time and I don't see any of them ever to have been in jail. And we all know that today for freedom of thinking that's where you'll end up. There are no philosophers today, just business people.
@hyperseauton Analytic philosophy is when a person just doesn't state a hypothesis and run away with it by drawing up theories based on it. But an analytic philosopher, like a scientist, takes the hypothesis and thoroughly applies the craft of logic to it to test whether it's sound.
@hyperseauton it's not analytic philosophy, it's a different paradigm. if you'd ever read Foucault, you'd realize that that's the whole point. there are other people who have written Continental philosophy, such as Deleuze, Derrida, Baudrillard, etc...; as an anthropology student in the US I can attest to the fact that his philosophy is not exclusive to students in Europe, rather it has proved useful to a wide range of disciplines and theories in the humanities, social sciences around the world.
Well, I think the documentary is from the 80s...love Foucault, u can see a great thinker (not only a philosopher) because of his modesty and sense of humor...
