  • great song.

  • Listen to Gideon Brown "my worried mind"

  • amazing, just amazing

  • i am so in love

  • Thankyou for playing at daytrotter. I downloaded this after listening to a preview not thinking too much of it. Today at work, it made my day much better.

  • Not as good without the trumpets but the lyrics are what really makes this song anyways.

  • Oops I meant big think, Josh ritter

  • Found him through big think. Search YouTube for : big think, John ritter

  • The lyrics are absolutely perfect. This is one of those rare songs that works perfectly, effortlessly, and resonates independent of the artist.

  • I found this song by mistake.

  • @charliesmakinme and? what'dya think?

  • @IfRainFallsIDance I was a great misake... He's really good, I'm into singer-songwriter stuff and he's right up my street.

  • I love this song! All of his music is good chill music.

  • this is not the album version of the song. but it's still awesome

  • 9 people must listen to that Bieber chick..

  • this video does not have enough views for how great it is

  • love, love, love!

  • Who would like a totally unique woodburnt portrait of Josh Ritter that has been signed by the man himself for $5? Raffles are selling now for Save the Kimberley organisation to help save the prestine region of outstanding natural beauty in the far North West of Australia from industrialisation.

  • he looks like if Tom Waits and a young Bob Dylan had a child. And I love him all the more for it.

  • Eight people have no idea as to what makes an awesome song.

  • This song makes me want to see the episode of the Twilight Zone this song was based on. (If indeed it was). haha

  • @clarissaNaz What episode is that? Is it "Time Enough" with the book loving man?

  • @clarissaNaz I've always thought this song would make an excellent short story, Twilight Zone would be perfect!

  • @clarissaNaz This is based off of a Twilight Zone episode? I've gotta see it! Old school Twilight Zone episodes are awesome. Surprisingly well written, they are.

  • My English teacher had us do an interpretation of this song.

I fell in love with it.

  • @XXGunshotHeartXX i wanna do that sooo bad! Coolest assignment ever!

  • Oh I am so glad someone posted this.. I heard this song a couple of years ago, and it popped into my head tonight.. Couldn't remember the name but I knew it was sweet, and eerie, and kinda sad.. It's lovely too :)

  • Few artists can add the term half-life into their song, and pull it off this well.

  • I saw him for free last night at Hartwood Acres just outside of Pittsburgh as part of the Allegheny County Summer Concert Series! It was epic, and there were a LOT of people there! Still to come: Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears and Grace Potter and the Nocturnals!

  • I want to find the 8 people who disliked this, so I know what a person with no soul looks like.

  • @SeoulSon51 oh thats easy, alot of freckles for the souls they have taken, and red hair resembling the flames from whence they came, the ginger

  • @TeHKRiiNG yes.

  • @TeHKRiiNG hahaha oh my god. that is genius.

  • he was gonna destroy the world to be with that girl....that is really romantic and really disturbed (;

  • Josh Ritter always great-but solo acoustic & live---BRILLIANT!

In a sea of young male singer-songwriters this man stands apart as an artist.

  • Josh Ritter always great-but solo acoustic & live---BRILLIANT!

In a sea of young male singer-songwriters this man stands apart as an artist.

  • Her name is Emily.

  • i am currently living in the city where josh ritter grew up and went to school. i saw him live at a benefit concert for one of the teachers at the high school (he was diagnosed with brain cancer) it was amazing. somehow i feel like a have a connection to his music (considering that many f his songs where written about this city) anyway, greetings from Moscow Idaho. peace love and happiness

  • Amazing song...he paints such a beautiful story

  • @TheGentlerains -- sounds like your aunt has bad taste!

  • My Aunt rejected him in college... :)

    And awesome song.

  • @TheGentlerains Is her name Marie?

  • @TheGentlerains

Obviously your aunt didn't see what his fingers could do...........think about it.

  • @TheGentlerains - which shows she was an idiot.

  • @TheGentlerains

Your Aunt probably regrets that now.

  • Comment removed

  • @TheGentlerains your aunt is crazy :P all the girls in my family (my mom included) have crushes on josh <3

  • Excellent song! One of my heroes. I could spend hours pondering over the lyrics.

If you like Josh's music you might also like my music. I'm an alt-country songwriter based in the UK. Check out the vids on my profile and let me know what you think!

  • Just saw Josh live in Kentucky! Glad I stumbled upon him. He didn't play this song, sadly, but the show was awesome, nonetheless.

  • Hi my name is Adam :3

  • This song is unbelievably good! Perfect fusion of hopelessness & love

  • I think it's about Marie Curie.........

  • Comment removed

  • i want to be marie.

  • I don't think this song is that complicated. Its about a man who is tempted to destroy the entire world so he won't lose the girl he loves.

  • This song is an allegorical masterpiece.

  • i think that when he sings about marie it can be broken down further. M stand for man or him, A stands for art, the fuel of his soul, R stands for reason, what he has lost from love, I stands for Interperetation, because he cant read the love of his lover, and E stands for ego, which is what is stopping him from true love... and the "RED" button stands for "Reachin Early Death" because of his distraught soul captured in fornicative lust when he wants love

  • @ewjungb Or it could just be a name, and red is generally the color of most detenation buttons?

  • @HeckfireBrimpebbles I think it could be interpreted differently in many ways and I like your interpritation more than mine, but really smart minds don't think alike, only Ritter knows it's meaning

  • How on God's green Earth can you even muster the balls to press dislike?? Seriously?? Were you raised under a freaking ROCK?!

  • A good cover of this song:

    /watch?v=BgLaerZFspc

  • 6 deaf people hate this song

  • @xxxKingArsenalxxx Look for Some THumbs up, Gunner Scum

  • @xxxKingArsenalxxx

i'm starting to think that youtube pays 6 people to dislike videos... because i've seen a shitload of videos on youtube with 6 dislikes!!

  • Josh Ritter = the man

  • I can't believe I never heard of this guy. Instant fan this song blew me away. Incredible picking incredible lyrics.

  • the fingerpicking is insane. I still cant quite figure out what he's doing. Great guitarist

  • I love this man.

  • Great song! reminds me of "Heirloom" by Brandon Snipes

  • excelent

  • this is a fellow who, upon watching, makes you leave the computer to pick up your guitar.

  • Really admire some of Josh Ritter's stuff. This one, the fusion of Adam and Eve, and the Cold War, if that's what it is, is confusing.

  • @brelfan The narrator and Marie are Adam and Eve. The missile silo is their Eden. Pushing "the button" so he and Marie can remain in the silo forever (in their Eden) is the temptation of Adam.

At least, that's my take on it.

  • @Crazy88Fingers You could be right. Still, Adam and Eve, Marie, missile silos... too confusing. I think this kid is one of the best young lyracists around, just don't think this one works.

  • @Crazy88Fingers He has said before many times that this song has no undertone. It's just about two people falling in love in "the most unlikely place." It is what it is, about two people who fell in love in a missile silo with a impending apocalypse.

  • beautifully haunting

  • absolutely gorgeous songwriting. what a breath of fresh air in times of absolutely horrible music

  • Amazing song! I need to see him next time he's in the UK!

If you like Josh Ritter you might also like my music. I'm an alt-country songwriter based in the UK (but origonally from Ireland). Check out the vids on my profile and let me know what you think!

  • I think Marie may BE the bomb. What do you all think?? Also, Marie Curie was a physicist/chemist in the early 1900s who is said to be the woman who ushered in the nuclear age.

  • "our love would live a half-life on the surface" - bloody brillant

  • The mystery of the metaphorical, haunting lyrics is answered by the title, "The Temptation of Adam", think missile = apple, Marie = Eve, Adam did destroy the "perfect" world. Beautiful, lingering song. Love Josh Ritter.

  • storytelling at its finest

  • I love how he is tempted to destroy the world and kill everyone if it means he can be with Marie for the rest of his life.

  • yeah he knows he did something right going by that smile.

  • "my eyes got washed away..."

  • I heard Josh sing this live in Amsterdam and I was totally absorbed....those lyrics.....his presence. Holy shit.

  • I have goosebumps.

  • so at night while you are sleeping, i hold you closer just because... as our time grows short i get a little nervous (:

  • i love him so much. the first time i heard him i loved him. i was at a blue rodeo concert and he was opening for them, and from then on i was hooked. for a while i wasn't sure why i had fell in love with his music so easily so easily. but then again, i am a bob dylan fan. :)

  • This is absolutely beautiful.

  • Everytime I hear this song I just want to cry, it really gets under my skin.

  • i always come back to this song when im over whelmed, its so beuitiful, it calms me down please come to dublin xx

  • the song its self has beauty, but the meaning it has is the thing that gets to me, the bunker that the man is, is heaven to him and the girl that his with makes it paradise, yet she wants to leave and he doesn't want that, hes tempted to push the red button to destroy whats above making sure that she stay with him, would he prefer to make the whole world go to a world war to keep his love, thats beauty

  • @fatcobra33 Wow, you are good. I liked the mistery of not getting the text, but I love this interpretation... :)

  • abosolutely beautiful ...mmhhmm..

  • What`s a beutiful Song!

  • Going to see Josh in Glasgow next month. Been a fan for ages now and i can't believe i'm getting to see josh and his band live. it's going to be soooooo good!

  • I owe my friend money for introducing to Josh's music.

  • @SeoulSon51 me too! i owe her more since i actually got to meet him in Atlanta on 5/13/2010 AND talk to him for about 10 mins AND i got about 3 josh hugs...best on earth!

  • Ahh. *replay* *replay* *replay*

  • Can anyone tell me where I can download this version of temptation of Adam? This is a different version than the one on the album and its much better.

  • I'm sick of people comparing him to Bob Dylan. This guy is so much better than Bob Dylan. Josh Ritter actually can sing and he writes better lyrics than anyone I have ever heard.

  • going to see him tonight!

  • My name is Marie :$ i wish some1 wud sing this for me :(

its such a beautiful song ... i want to jump into the song and never leave

  • why doesnt this have the 13 million views of the eminem song ???

  • you are a silly goose if you ever pass up a chance to see Josh live, you will never see a more entertaining, interactive show! I saw him on 5-13 in Atlanta and had the chance to meet him and chat with him for about 10 mins. they come no better than Josh (and Josh hugs are the best hugs on earth)....Dawn Landes, his wife, was with him and she is also a fantastic artist in her own right.

  • If you like this you should check out his new song The Curse. It's a love song about a mummy! Brilliant

  • This song should be taught in high school English and literature classes.

  • @elgray16

THAT'S WHERE I FIRST HEARD THIS SONG!

  • i can't believe 6 people disliked this! they must be deaf.... this is amazing music!

  • deep and beautiful !

  • Marie is my name!!!!! i hope this song is not about his short time with some gay dude named Murray. But it could be.

  • sometimes i wonder why josh ritter isn't the most well known musician on earth.. and i guess its just because people dont like good music. thats the only explanation

  • fantastic. simply said.

  • love this song fucn great writer.. musical godson of guthrie and dylan

  • @geewizz20 And Randy Neuman

  • my English teacher knows this guy we were in 8th period class and he unbox a record of josh new song so runs the world away he got it a couple days early

  • Moscow, Idaho represent! :D

  • sweet as ever! gonna see him in grand canal theatre tuesday. happy days

  • jagherterzack....he does sound like Bob Dylan, but dang dude...do you have to use the Lord's name in vain like that? You are hurting my ears. Not to mention what you are doing to God's. Just saying...you might want to curb your words a little. :) Peace and blessings to you.

  • Argh! Where is the other studio recording with the trumpets and stuff? Did it get taken down from youtube? I prefer it, personally.

  • most amazing song ever written.

it gives me chills every time i listen to it.

  • I was at the concert in Nijmegen.. Best concert i have ever seen. He is such a nice guy!

  • Saw him yesterday at Trädgår'n in Gothenburg, Sweden! Amazing live performance!!!

  • @Theportrait jag också, fick till och med prata lite med honom efteråt!

  • Absolutely Beautiful

  • he needs to come to central Florida

  • Saw Josh in Portsmouth- South of England- was playing with Ray Lamontage!! He was amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • thats an epic concert right there

  • Love this song, love it live creates wonderful atmosphere you could hear a pin drop.

  • Like this song.

  • Adam is tempted with selfishness (tempted to push the button). He believes that if he can keep her in this controlled environment, she will never look for someone else who may fit her idea of the "perfect match"/ her "perfect lover". Pushing the red button would eliminate all threats of competition. It would force him to be her only option.

    Tragic, beautiful, and hopeless.

    Josh is an amazing lyricist.

    -Brim

  • search youtube for josh ritter live at the apartment and hear an incredible version of this song...

  • Thanks for the suggestion, it was awesome.

  • @HeckFireBrimpebbles i always interpreted as that hes getting sent out of the missile silo and he cant be with her anymore, but if he pushes the big red button, the world will end and he can be with her forever in heaven or whatever afterlife.

  • It's in regards to the fragility of love and how its environment and circumstance dictates its growth.

  • I've never heard of this guy before, but by the holy shit of jesus fucking christ, he's the next Bob motherfucking Dylan.

  • I was just turned onto him last week by a friend...i am hooked...i just bought Hello Starling...i cannot get Kathleen and You Don't Make it Easy, Babe out of my head...he is INCREDIBLE.

  • @jagheterzack

oh tat gave me a great laugh. Just heard a tune over the speakers at local Starbucks. Asked what it was and made notes in the book Fremder I was joting notes of time and a connection to higher tones atomic circulations

  • @jagheterzack - But with a much better voice!

  • @jagheterzack ... i wonder how many people have been called "the next bob dylan"... i think bob dylan is the next bob dylan - and josh ritter is the next josh ritter

  • @adrock1011 : I totally agree with you! Same goes for Ryan Adams songwriting. Cheers

  • @adrock1011 Answer - three, Bruce Springsteen, Steve Forbet and Loudon Wainright, at least according to Loudon!

  • @scotsophrenia and my favorite little Swede, The Tallest Man on Earth. Check him out if you haven't already. He's brilliant.

  • @adrock1011 I think Josh Ritter is a million times better than Bob Dylan. And that's saying something because I like Dylan. But Josh can actually sing AND he can write circles around BD.

  • @jagheterzack I agree he's awesome, but do you really have to swear like that? Sheesh.

  • @jagheterzack with in the first few seconds, of listening to this song.. "Bob Dylan" popped into my had.. bahaha than your was the first comment I saw.. (:

  • @jagheterzack with in the first few seconds, of listening to this song.. "Bob Dylan" popped into my had.. bahaha than your was the first comment I saw.. (:

  • @jagheterzack Not to take away from Ritter's achievement, but I see echoes of Paul Simon (at his best) here -- specifically Simon's great song "Duncan" in the cadence.

  • @KHarville111

Don't worry: comparing someone with Paul Simon does not take away the admiration. On the contrary....

  • @peterroll1 no you didnt piss off spamming please!

    this mans a genius

  • Im going to Josh Ritter concert in NYC this month, anyone would like to go with me?

  • i like this. what's a good album to start out with?

  • I'd recommend the Animal Years, that's classic Josh Ritter.

  • @BasilRulesMe Thanks I'll check it out.

  • I'd say start with Hello starling :)

  • Josh come in Portugal, NOW!

  • Josh, you are amazing. If you guys enjoy this check out Joel Christofer out of Los Angeles as well!

  • he lowered the lights at the world cafe and played this in the dark. the man is my jesus.

  • WW-eye-eye-eye

  • nice voice )

  • WWIII

  • The five letter word for apocalypse is 'death'

  • i couldn't believe last time when i asked if anyone had ever heard of him and they all nodded no! people should listen to josh ritter because his music is good! it can make you sing, dance, and cry all at the same time...this is definately one of his greatest...my first time hearing it i cried(it was the first time i'd ever even heard his music) but i rushed online and looked it up....bravo! great amazing song!
