Eggman is the original japanese name. America didn't start using it until Sonic Adventure where Eggman is used as an insult. In Japan the name Robotnik became his surname in Sonic Adventure 2. Also Sonic liking chili dogs started in America and in Sonic Unleashed to now they started using it.

i think the whole robotnik thing goes like this:

his original name was Dr. Ovi Kintobor until he became evil and turned to Dr. Ivo Robotnik.

maybe "Ovi" means 'egg' in japanese. it sounds a little more japanese than 'Ivo'.

That's pretty much he gist of where he came from. Kintobor was Sonic's friend. He was trying to collect all evil in the world into the chaos emeralds. There was an accident and the emeralds blew up in Kintobor's face. Thus Robotnik was born.

Actually Eggman was his original name in the Japanese version. Sega of America changed it to Robotnik upon Sonic 1's Genesis release.

Just to add to my previous comment this has inspired me to make sonic levels of my own based on parts of the levels, eg marble, metropolis, scrap brain and hill top (based on the section of act 2 with the rising lava and all the small platforms) and am currently working on spring yard. Thanks for the inspiration

I feel the same way about the whole Dr. Eggman name change and have always and will always like Dr. Robotnik better. After I did some research however, I found out that Eggman was his original name before the game was brought to the U.S. I was just upset because I thought the company was trying to change things, as they have with the new terrible Sonic games. This is just my opinion and it's okay if you like the new ones.

Plus, Dr. R was the first name, despite what some may believe to be true, Dr. R was in fact the first made, and lasted as the official name for 1 month until they decided to make Eggman official, while Dr. R is western/Euro.
