i have a couple of dreads that are really thin, and i want to thicken them, will the crochet hook work on thiner dreads or are they better on thicker dreads?
Great Information I love your technique, and I will practice. I love your video. Keep sending more How-To video. Thanks A Million. You Are a Great Instructor.
whats the correct length to start dreading at? my bangs go all the way down to my lips and the top of my head that hair goes all the way down to my shoulders, is that long enough to start?
Long enough to form the knots that make the cylindrical shape and thickness you want your locs to grow out at. This method will form the knots to make dreads when the hair is at almost any length. It is up to the person and how long they want their dreads to start out at.
hi, a got a question, i did my dreadlock like a week ago, but you now that the hair its staring to growing and its normal hair, do i have to do the thing with the needle to the roots??thanks...if i write something wrong sorry i really dont know much english
Yes, as loose hairs come out, it is fine to pull them back into the dreadlock. Doing the roots with the crochet hook is good too. Just don't pull out the hair by getting too close to the scalp.
I really need some help from you, here's a few questions:
Iv'e had my dreads for like 1-2 months, i had a friend backcomb them but i don't know if he did a bad job or if i'm doing something wrong.
Alot of my dreads has split up into small strings of hair, they're not really locked up and the hair looks kind of straight. I don't understand what's keep them together so i'm worried that they might "fall apart". I don't have a Crochee hook/needle at the moment so you know what to do without one? :)
A way so that the dreads dont come out as easy is to tighten like the skill teacher shows and then lightly burn the loose strands of the dreads with a lighter, this seals it in and they dont come out as easy
Yes, it would help if you learned with a friend so they can help with the back of the hair. I would section off and braid your hair the same way you want it to look on your scalp and the same thickness of the braids so the dreads will be about that thick. Take one braid out at a time and dread it. This way you can dread in stages to make it easer on yourself and get the dreads to look good on the scalp.
ok so I should have waited until the end of the vid. Welp! I tried it. Found a tiny knitting needle in the sewing box and... IT WORKED!!! IT FRIGGIN WORKED! I tried it on fake hair. I haven't tried it on my own locs yet, but i'm going to practice still and then do my own locs. THANKS MAN! Muuuuuuuuuwah!
i had my locs last year and i got them from a shop, this was seems WAYYYY mo bettah than what they did. they just use the backcombing and dread gel. i got a little bit of flakes every now and then. i like your ways. THANK YOU. im about to loc up again because of these videos.
Yes there seems to be a demand for this style. Check out my Bangkok dread videos to see how they do it in the salon. This method works great for the salon because it requires maintenance every few months so you will get repeat costumers.
hey i have two questions, first when turning the lock do you constantly turn it the same way all the way down? and second when using the needle, when going in and out do you go all the way through to the other side when pulling the hair or are you just going into the middle?
Question 1: You can turn the loc either way. Turning helps to lay the loose hairs down to be cought by the crochet hook. I personally turn both ways depending on which way seems best for my hand positions
Question 2: Once again, both ways work. Poking all the way through is most common and helps to grab those loose hairs. Poking into the middle of the loc helps to tighten the loc up. Going into to the loc at an angle helps to make the loc thicker. Be sure to curve the hook out when exiting.
O yea, afro hair works the best because it will knot more naturally. The crochet hook just helps it to look more cylindrical. My advice is to have some one braid your hair first with the size and style you want your locs to be in, then take one braid out at a time and loc it. This way you will not have loose hairs getting in the way. It will take a long time but it will be easer and look nicer than if you just let the hair knot up naturally.
I like the video and how you form the locks but i still dont understand how to use the crotchet needle properly. I have smaller dreads can a crotchet needle be used on that?
Thank you for doing these videos. I want to do my own hair, it is almost to my waist. I am sure it will take a while to do but I am looking forward to it. I have lots of crochet hooks here so can get help doing it.
Sorry, I'm just a teacher for now. It takes alot of time and work to loc somebodies hair. My wife had hers done in Thailand, I recomend ko san road, in Bangkok. Any Thailand tourist book will have it.
If all the real and true knowledge in the world was teache by a philosophy of sharing experience and not by the money making.....it will be a Skillworld that i wan to live in ! Thanks a LOT for sharing your knowledge with all of us and again keep the same way of thinking Mister Skillteacher. Bless ya !
WELL SAID! And you make absolutely the BEST dreads I have EVER seen. I have had mine exactly 3 months now. I wish I had started mine this way( I only used backcombing) Now I have a lot of loose loops in the middle of my dreads:( I will be doing it this way from now on, so there is still hope:) Your videos really are VERY HELPFUL! THANKS for taking the time to make these videos!
Maybe your needle is too big. Also try pulling on the lock to make it longer, this will also loosen the loc up to poke the hook through. Don't pull too hard or you can rip it in two.
is latchin a good idea????? i do latchin and back combing on the roots but that back combin aint workin out for me i got crochet hooks but im berly gettin the hang of it and i think the hook is one of the most effective way to go... thanks you helped i saw your other vids keep up the help alot of us need it thank you.
the comb is called a teasing comb and yes the tec is called back combing. i recently bought one of the hooks to try your method and find myself getting stabed alot
I got stabbed a lot in the first year of practicing this style. You'll get better over time. If you go slower the needle will be less likely to stab your finger.
Love all ur vids!!! Thanks sooooo much!!!

This method should work great to thicken any dread. Try it just on one dread first to see how you like it.

@PHaze28 I can say from my own experience that it works with a small, 1,5 hook. =)
