  • LOL i love the way he threw the cup of water to Lawler and run off like a child

  • Andy... it's time to come out of hiding. My kids need to know who you are. It's been long enough.

  • @Altair6films Considering he's been dead since 1984, I don't think he's going to be coming out of hiding.

  • Bitch slap

  • @Brine7Q @cbrueske "Not Just Knee Deep" by Funkadelic.

  • umadbro?

  • Times when David Letterman had an interesting show.

  • great :D

  • press 8 for f*** your life

  • Wow. LOL

  • if andy was alive today he would be so much bigger

  • what's tha name of this song 0:14 ?

  • @Brine7Q me, myself and I by de la soul

  • FAKE!

  • This was a SET-UP..andy and Jerry making a mockery of themselves on national TV. See "Man on the Moon"

  • @morpheuslove1 right around the time man on the moon came out (it was after, i can't say exactly how long) but JR and he got to talking about Kaufman on RAW and Lawler was still selling the lie. i just laughed. I think deep down everyone knows it was a work, but Lawlers going to go to his grave still trying to make people second guess themselves. Maybe it's his way of honoring andy, who knows. cheers.

  • @morpheuslove1: But in Lawler's book, he says that he came up with this slap on his own and didn't tell Kaufman about it.

  • Great actors both...ALL this stuff was an orchestra act that both were in on....

  • these 2 revolutionized the WWE, the Soap Opera for Men =D

  • It's strange to watch first the movie Man on the moon and then these videos. Earlier you woudnt have such an opportunity

  • I wonder if he thinks Lawler is a fucking asshole

  • @bunnyraebit Wow... good to know.

  • VINTAGEEE LAWLER!!!

  • I am. This is great footage

  • Jerry Lawler was only participating in national slap a pussy day. Hell I'd slap him myself. Nice one Lawler!!!

  • Kaufman in the top 10 greatest heels of all time..

  • Now that my friends is a work...

  • Kaufman and Lawler were actually good friends.

  • How did people back then NOT KNOW this was staged? It's so ridiculously over-the-top that it's obvious. Andy was really overdoing it. Yeah, we get it dude, you're mad. Jeez. -__-

  • @foxxyloxx

He's actually dead now. I'm sure his mad side no longer exists.

  • @foxxyloxx

he might have been "acting" mad..but that was a fucking slap and a half

  • @foxxyloxx

Keep in mind that while staging pranks and joke like this is commonplace now, it wasn't then. The reason we see it all the time now is BECAUSE people like Andy paved the way. Back then it was totally unheard of.

  • Who's Jerry Lawler?

  • @Cougelly1999: One of the most successful pro-wrestlers in the world.

  • @kanenkitten Wow, thank you for this quick information, I've been wondering about this since I saw it, and I wish I knew the circumstances which led to this--was it all a joke? Actually, I was first watching Amy Winehouse video of her Belgrade concert and I thought, is she acting? It reminded me of Andy Kaufman!

  • @Cougelly1999: Apparently according to Jerry Lawler's book, the slap was Lawler's idea that he came up with there and then.

  • @kanenkitten There must be something about the creative process that folks can come up with this stuff, so the neck brace was a joke, too? And what do you think, was Amy's concert an act too? She sang the whole set list, it looked like. Folks have told me no, she isn't a comedian! And from her comments, no one was laughing.

  • @Cougelly1999 Watch the move, "Man on the Moon" where Jim Carrey plays Andy Kaufman. It's such an awesome film and it will explain a lot.

  • @sykickg I can't believe so many people know all this stuff about Professional Wrestling! And why didn't I? I missed so much in watching Man in the Moon without all this context. I like the other characters he played and its sad that I only know about them through Youtube.

  • @Cougelly1999 hes an ex pro fessional wrestler and now i do believe he does color commentating for wwe raw

  • @77hiphopaintdead77 Wow, why didn't I know this that Jerry Lawler was a professional wrestler--amazed at how many folks knew this!

  • This was a work

  • I wish you could call someone a fucking asshole on tv without Parent Groups bitching about it now.

  • i bet jerry lawlor and andy had a good laugh bak stage afterwards...how lawlor kept a straight face wen andy was calling him an asshiole ill never know

  • 29 years later Jerry stuck a foot in Michael Cole's mouth

  • Andy didn't die actually, he went on to play bass in Nirvana

  • i wonder why they didn't cut to a commercial break...

  • "...Lawler later revealed that not only was his entire feud with Kaufman staged, but the two were actually very good friends...."

    From Wikipedia.

  • was that real ? was that live ? ...

  • Andy Kaufman was never funny and had ZERO talent, I like seeing him get slapped, too bad it was fake, he deserved to be beated to death for being an annoying no talent piece of garbage.

  • FUCK THAT DEAD JEW BASTARD ANDY.

  • Somebody should have run Andy Kaufmann over with a car like Eddie Gilbert would do to Jerry years later. Someone needs to do that with Vince McMahon and Eric Bischoff, for real.

  • Andy Kaufman should be inducted into the WWE hall of fame because he had one of the first storylines in pro wrestling. At the time nobody knew if it was real or not making him the first real heel to get maximum exposure !

  • @DaddyBlack83 If Drew Carey just got inducted this year for 1 guest spot, then Andy is way-long overdo. Lawler should induct him while he's still around before it's too late.

  • @deathcatg AGREED !

  • @deathcatg DID YOU SEE MAN ON THE MOON WITH JIM CARREY PLAYING ANDY KAUFFMAN, BECAUSE YOU'LL FIND OUT ANDY KAUFFMAN DIED IN THE 1980'S he's been gone a long time

  • guys this happened a long time ago before I was born I dont know much but (without sending hate mail if i"m wrong) didnt andy get a lifetime ban for cursing like that? i read it on a magazine

  • Comic Genius! Andy was one of a kind. Some of his humor was so over the top that no one got the joke, but Andy knew exactly what he was doing all the time!

  • I remember at the time how shocking this was.

But now, after learning about WWE performers, this seems so mundane. The WWE is in the business of improvised banter leading into rehearsed, choreographed routines. The new show Tough Enough features the inside scoop on training wrestlers, and it absolutely drains any shock or spontenaity out of the whole thing. Strange how the context of a performance like this can change everything. Now this vi just looks like all the other crap out there.

  • @BarnyFife1 But, you must understand, if not for THIS and this "bit" alone (the whole Kaufman/Lawler saga bit - not just this clip), the other stuff nowadays, including the over the top totally unbelievable "Tough Enough", would cease to exist. Jerry Lawler, who's still involved gives Andy props to this day.

  • There are two types of people: those who recognize that Andy Kaufman was one of the most profound comic geniuses ever to live; and those who just don't get it.

  • A set-up. Why would he wait until they returned from a commercial to continue his rant? BUT OF COURSE, for ratings!!! It sure fooled everyone, too.

Also, watch the wrestling match...Kaufman practically leaps into the second powerdriver! If he's so weakened and limp from the first one, why did he wrap his arms around The King's legs and lift his arms straight up in the air? DOH, FAKE....and a good one, at that.

  • @badgertale Did you figure that one out all by yourself?

  • damn was david letterman ever young??

  • Looks pretty planned to me. Who cares, it's awesome.

  • Andy Kaufman is the original troll.

  • Does anybody know that they planned that whole thing?

  • get fucken old

  • Andy sold that bitch slap very well. lol

  • @StanKingston420 He either told Lawler to lay it in, or Lawler decided to by himself, but there was no sell there.

  • they remade this on raw except now its michel cole

  • Jerry Lawler is getting a championship match at the next WWE Pay per view. That's crazy. Andy Kaufman rules by the way.

  • Lawler was so far ahead of his time with the angles and matches he had in Memphis .

  • This wasn't as epic as i thought it would be

  • People call genius to anything these days, like this piece of shit "comedian"

  • @onidead Kaufman was innovative and unique for his time. That is what makes him genius. Maybe he doesn't appear that way to you because you are jaded because of what "Comedy" has become.

  • @Kykle86 To me comedy is something really subtle, a clever use of words, something that makes you laugh becuase of the way a sentence was used and the context it was in with small details that most can't really see not stupid mindless crap like jackass or this guy.

  • @onidead Hmmm... That's interesting. So give me an example of, say, a comedian you think is funny...or a movie. It's just so I can grasp what you think is funny. We'll take, for example, two movies from the 70's, Animal House, and Annie Hall. They're both comedies, Annie Hall being more subtle than Animal House. Which do you prefer?

  • @Kykle86 Notice how he never replied....

  • Lawler is my favorite entertainer of all time..at least in the WWE.

  • @bigb00tyjudydude Kaufman and Lawler were working together to screw with people....

  • great clip!!

  • I met Paul Shaffer once and talked with him about this. He said Letterman was really upset and thought it was for real. Awesome stuff, Late Night was the greatest show ever back in those days.

  • ytf was this guy a famous comedian? Nothing funny about this

  • Jim carey was great as ANDY in the man in the moon movie !Lawler and Kaufman played these roles so well!

  • So what happened? What started this fight?

  • @TheLastPancho it was theatre they were pulling the audiences leg for months and laughing their asses of behind the scenes

  • who is the Tom he's referring to?

  • @TheWorldsStage I think he is referring to Tom Snyder who had a talk show in this time slot before Letterman.

  • watch "Man on the Moon" and you will understand :)

  • I love when he apologizes for swearing and then calls him a fucking asshole. A true comedy legend.

  • u cant even compare this to borat,,this is so mutch better u retard..

  • Was this real? on TV?

  • @truely12 Andy was legitimately slapped by Lawler, however Andy didn't know what was going to happen going on stage that night. Jerry said in his biography that slapping Andy was basically a spur of the moment thing, and when talking with Andy afterwards he was ecstatic that it went to such heights on TV. There was some real backlash associated with this incident but overall Andy loved it being the man that he was and Jerry being the man he is loved anything that drew attention to the business.

  • Jerry Lawler is my new hero over jesus now haha

  • FALCON SLAP!!!!

  • @DaedricDan Finally a funny comment. Thank You.

  • Holy crap

    Whata slap

  • wow, what a slap

  • who's here cause they wanted to see the 30th most memorable moment on tv??

  • @swlover1 where's the list? i'd like very much to see it

  • @thelostpiranha look it up

  • @swlover1 Since you didn't say "thumbs up if you agree!!!!" I will give you a thumbs up.

  • @swlover1 Is that what it was? The 30th? What was #1?

  • I LOVE THE KING! <3

  • JERRY LAWLER WON THAT BRAWL!!!! The King is AWESOME!

  • Alot of people didnt know it at the time but this was a work not a shoot.

  • it's a bit?

    Joe, say it aint so

  • am i watching jerry springer?

  • wasn't their a movie about this?

  • This whole thing was an act. Kaufman and Lawler's behavior was totally planned by both of them. Dave wasn't even aware of this.

  • The best part was they kept the fact that it was staged a secret for like 10 years after Andy died.

  • this is fake.

  • @mi11ke04 Are you seriously???? This is sensation!!!!!)))

  • somtimes you just gotta say whats on your mind!!!

  • Letterman just sits there while a guy in a neck brace gets slapped so hard he falls out of his chair? How do you spin that? "Letterman displays his trademark cool." ??? Cold-blooded.

  • All due respect but : Sacha Baron Cohen> Andy Kaufman

  • @gd129 bad troll

  • Wasn't this the pilot episode (1982)?

  • was that scripted or was that real?

  • @alhaqiqa1 Neither.

  • andy kaufman is so brilliant!

  • Those were the days man..

  • Ah yes, to see the days when worked shoots were truly supprising, and not old hat. Thanks Vince Russo, for ruining any possibilty of thinking anything in wrestling was real.

  • (comment 2) I realized all this when I said to myself this past Monday 'wow, I don't miss Jerry the King Lawler one bit'. Not hearing him on commentary but rather Josh Matthews as his substitute was such a breath of fresh air. These news guys like Matt Striker and Josh Matthews really take pride out of the job as shown in how much more personality, character, interest, entertainment, and enthusiasm they bring to commentary. Cole still takes pride out of the job as seen in his new persona

  • Sadly the King bites unbelievably on commentary these days. I mean, we all know he lost his edge a long time ago, but what its getting worse and worse by the week I'm afraid. Likely he's bored of commentating after nearly 20 years which is understandable, but to have that come through in commentary each week is unacceptable. His half-heartedness and lethargy on commentary is cringe-worthy and the WWE needs to give someone who would value that job and show personality each week a shot at it.

  • and now Kaufman is running out of the studio like a scolded dog

  • letterman has kicked out people for a lot less. This was staged.

  • Sooo a set up...the slap was a typical fake wrestler slap and the way Kaufman flew onto the floor ...all fake

  • PUSSY!!!

  • lol only on american tv you bunch of crazies!

  • staged.

  • Letterman was a comic genius back then.

  • The original Borat.

  • @acesobrian Please don't compare borat to such genius.

  • @Deviantial right on.

  • @Deviantial I wouldn't want to speak for a dead man, but I bet Andy would've enjoyed Borat.

  • @Deviantial Borat is way way funnier

  • @Deviantial well idk if you have ever seen bruno but sasha definitely invoked andy kaufman during the celebrity talk show pitch scene, teasing the audience with an interview with harrison ford but first a bunch of nasty male dancing then finally harrison ford says "fuck off". i dont think you could get much more kaufman than that and i think andy would have approved of at least that scene

  • I'm so glad Kaufmann is dead. He was (and remains) one of the biggest frauds and assholes ever on TV. I didn't even like him on Taxi, and that show was great. The funny thing about this exchange is that it's all staged. At 1:12 you'll see Andy heading for the door. You'll notice a few pages and interns at the door. I was good friends with one of them and this person told me it was all staged. This person also told me Andy acted like a total asshole all evening. I'm glad he's dead.

  • @tritonrocks my god you're an idiot. of course it was staged. it was part of his act. if you don't get it then you don't get it. just go watch two and a half men or something.

  • @marktrenkle Great. I'm an idiot. I guess I'll just have to live with the fact that I'm a 51 year old idiot who's retired and can spend whatever time I want commenting on YouTube videos. Not that I do ... it's off to the boat later today, then spending time with friends tomorrow, and a volunteer project all next week at the local church. And I prefer Big Bang Theory and House, thank you very much.

  • @tritonrocks Big Bang Theory and House prove my point perfectly. It's good that you've come to terms with your idiocy. This kind of humor, granted, is not for everyone, but being glad that someone died at 35 of lung cancer is a bit harsh for not liking the mans work. Tell your church friends how glad you're that a man died-- I'm sure they'll join in as he wasn't christian and all.

  • @marktrenkle This will be my last reply to you. Feel free to mock me all you want. I know my situation, and I have a good idea about yours. { IF reply = TRUE AND user = marktrenkle {{ start trcrte, report rte { END IF

  • This was all staged.

  • SLAPPED DA SHIT OUTTA DAT GUY. ALMOST LIKE WATCHIN MO POP CURLY.

  • Greatest fake thing EVER!

  • @vomit49894 yeah dude you know, i thought that it was real too when i first saw this. but then years later i saw this movie "man on the moon" with whats his name? the guy who played in the mask. i had no idea that it was fake until then. it sure was the greates fake ever. as you said.

  • @starsandbarsforever I hear ya. I thought it was real too, until Man on the Moon. I saw an interview with Lawler that confirmed it being fake.....good times on TV.

  • @vomit49894 yeah, but i wonder if david lettermen was in on it too. any idea?

  • @starsandbarsforever I do believe Letterman was in the know. I could be wrong however.

  • @vomit49894 yeah that would not surprise me if letterman was in on the joke too.

  • @starsandbarsforever Well maybe Dave was in on this whole thing from the get go, but if you notice right at 1:04 he really flinches right when Andy hits the desk there,

(which could of course just be due to nervousness as to how this whole thing would come across on national TV, and of course just being caught right there between Lawler and Kaufman)

  • @starsandbarsforever Cont

Dave was basically right in the firing line so to speak.

  • @cha5 yeah, i would have got the hell out of there too.

  • Comment removed

  • @starsandbarsforever I'll bet the FCC went ballistic that night, even with all the "Cukoo! Cukoo! Cukoo!" bleeps.

  • @cha5 i would not doubt that. he sure did not hold back on the swearing.

  • @starsandbarsforever Yeah if Dave was in on this whole thing from the get go he had to have balls of steel, I mean these are uncharted waters here, there was really no way of knowing what kind of action the higherups at NBC might take in regards to this show or what kind of fines the FCC might levy in this instance.

  • I LOVE that Andy has Lawler really, really slap him.

  • where jerry springer got inspired...

  • Dave just casually drinking his coffee after Lawler smacked Andy and were going to commercial.

  • ...Is this where they got the idea for the Tourette's guy? The neckbrace, the profanity...it all makes sense...

  • Jerry Lawler was really over back then, wasn't he! Anyone interested in Jerry Lawler's book 'It's Good To Be King' check out the review on my channel.

  • nuffin more humiliating then gettin bitched slapped my a dude

  • did i hear De la soul? :D

  • Lawler slapped the taste right out of that boys mouth! lol!

  • Wrestlers today could learn from Andy Kaufman. If Cena had ever shown passion that was half that convincing I would cheer him gladly. But he doesn't, so I don't. Sigh...

  • The film "Man On The Moon" is really awesome and shold be watched by everyone... :)

  • @OnlyFoolsAndHorsesHQ= I just saw it on AMC. It was like the ghost of Andy possessed Jim Carrey and acted out the movie. For a minute, it was like it really was Andy. Good movie;.

  • Andy Kaufman was not that fuckin' funny people. the whole thing is staged anyway.

  • @plantguy666

the feud was excellent, and drew big money..what else can you want

  • @plantguy666 the world disagreed with you and we know its staged it wouldnt be a joke if it wasnt.
