Is there more than one version of this song because I seem to remember the version playing on the radio back then sounded a little different to the one that is 'out there' (and not because of the mushiness of the AM band signal)
A exellent song clip is ok but it has nothing to do with the song it is just images of our great country and John insome very average 80's gear. I have this plus the extende mix on CD the album was called the War Years as in (Warner Music).
I cant believe how hard it was to find this song, i had to order an lp single from Germany then transfer it on to cd, thats how much i like this song though
Absolutely GENIUS track and I for one LOVE the video. There is NOTHING to laugh about with 80s video's. They were imaginative and artistic unlike ANYTHING since!
From 'Pasedena' to this in '83 was, what 11 years and he finished off his commercial success with what many judge to be his best............an '80's song but a fine testament.
I have been trying to find out who sang this song for ages. It was played heaps back in 83/84' ....... Was it originally by J.P.Y as Manhattan Transfer comes up when searching for lyrics ...... Anyway thanks heaps for the post!
@Sethlapod Yes, he was original singer...went by the name of Paul Young then. I had the original song on my old computer that crashed! It was 10 times better than this version of the song. It used to be my favourite song back then. I should have it burned on a CD somewhere and I've never posted here before so don't know how to do it, but since I also cannot find the original (slow) version of this on Youtube, I'll try to upload it if I can ever find it again. People should hear it the way it was
Also, what is up with the pastoral aerial footage of Sydney at the end? Not that Sydney isn't beautiful, but it goes against the whole "primitive" nature of the rest of the video. And what's with the fishing on the pier footage? Talk about a mish mash of video! It kind of reminds me of Tommy Leonetti's My City of Sydney at the end.
This song should have been a huge hit, in the US even. It sounds like something Chris De Burgh would have done. JPY looks a lot like Cliff Richard though in this video, with his "geezer yuppie" outfit. Love the synths and glocks though.
I think the budget for the clip was almost $100, but the track is excellent. The bit about fishing was what John Paul Young would always rather be doing by his own admission. I reckon you are the only person to admit knowing who Tommy Leonetti was.......
i agree... very good song but what a naff video. I can almost compare this video to many Aussie television commercials coming out at the same time this song was a hit. Take the music away, replace JPY with Peter Brock and presto, you've got an early 80's Bridgestone ad!
I LOVE this song .. had it on a compliation album in '83 with a coloured cartoon style beach scene on the fron of it .. also on it was "Just got lucky" ..
Nice Nice Video. I really loved your video. Youtube can be a great asset for you. If you need any help getting your video exposed, check out this site called tubeviews [dot net] It has really done wonders for me, I have built 3 Channels up with videos at top in position and this is my forth channel i'm going to working on.
The 80s were great! Great time for music. You might laugh at the fashion or the music video productions from that decade, but 80s music was the shit and still is.
Took the words right out of my mouth.. We're both the same age and I agree - the prior generations had far superior music in every single way. I can't even stand anything even remotely recent. There was true originality and creativity back then.
I grew up in the 80's and during the time I thought we stole ideas and fashion from other era's (60's with the beatles and 70's with punk and disco) but now I'm older I realize that we truly did have our own sound...Sometimes I wonder if the new gen thinks the same...
Thanks for posting this video. I've got this song on an LP "Summer Breaks". I was interested in the story associated with the album "One Foot In Front" you mentioned but couldn't find any mention of it in the link you posted.
It appears that there are a number of albums that just don't get the promotion they deserve. Tim Finn is one artist who seemed to lose on this front when he had good albums. Thanks for telling me the story!
I actually got this clip straight off an episode of Countdown (which was re-played on rage a few years back). I merged the video with an MP3 that I found by chance... I do have other ways of getting hold of videos...

yes i think back in those days , we all looked a bit different , so tell me was JPY actually there when you were dancing ?? how old were u then , and how did u get the gig ??
I think if this was on Countdown Nov 83 [as I read previous comment], I would've been 19/20yrs old @the time when filmed. Cant remember too much but I DO remember it was raining & COLD. Had to wear skimpy costumes & were freezing cos it was made in a big ol COLD Warehouse in Ultimo, Sydney! JPY WAS there & I remember seeing him crackin up @ 1stage when they were filming. He lost concentration for a moment but ended up they kept it in the clip!
Remembered thinking he was very nice man! Very Pro!
I think I got the gig from just being involved in Dance/Drama & performing at the time. I had worked in Sydney as a dancer in clubs as well as in Theatre Productions & had done a bit of hiphop/jazz/funk dancing as well. I honestly cant remember how I got contacted & through what agency or what. I guess becos I was involved in so much at the time! - Oh to be 20 again!! haha!
Funnily I ended up being in 3 film clips: 1x Dancing in JPY clip, 1x Miming in ScottCarne clip, & 1x my Band's clip! :)
Thank you for sharing your incredible experience with the rest of us. Oh yes and we have all lost our figures , that is something our daughters now have, and they are welcome to it.

Oh yeah, a mix of Umpa Loompas and Mad Max. If I were him I'd find the director and smack him with an Emu leg after I roasted it for dinner. Percussion bit was OK, but frankly I was expecting to see grenade launchers not oversised runnign turkeys.
I think the video could have been better. There's just no need to have some of the images that appear in this video. Even the laser lights behind JPY being shaped like the map of Australia kinda sucks. This song should have been a bigger hit. It had a lot going for it. The video is not what I'd expect.
