  • 3 out of ten? when you gave cage 5 out of 10. what? buddy eyedea actually rapped on his tracks. i love cage too but he barley rapped this, eyedea still has great metaphors and similes just because abilities used real instruments on it doesnt mean it isnt rap like fuck. he grew up as an artist and didnt like what he was doing like fuck GET OF HIS DICK the album is hot and your hating for no reason R.EYE.P eyedea

  • @BenTraplin ...sigh.... How am I hating?????? I have all Eyedea's albums!!!!!!!! Goddammit, just read the comments before you post man, I'm not repeating myself for the 100000000000000th time.

  • Nigga you gay as fuck dookie ass lookn nigga

  • @niggagangstanigga Jesus, get off my dick. You actually made another profile to get at me, get a life. You useless cunt!

  • You're are the general virus that tries to bring down good artists. Focus on your own shit instead of his, seriously. If you like it good, if you don't then shut the fuck up and move to the next track.Better yet, make your own and try sharing it.

  • @DeejayProtoss I am doing my own shit. Hop off the cock. I didn't like this album and I'm not gonna change my mind because of your trolling. You should shut the fuck up and keep it moving. Have a nice day.

  • shut the fuck up nigga! ! leave eyedea alone, nigga eyedea be telling the truth unlike yo communist ass bitcch

  • @realniggagangsta What? Eat a dick and die, troll.

  • @MisanthropikOne ya breath stink

  • @MisanthropikOne eat a dick nigga, quit hating on the nigga just because he accomplished more then yo complaining ass bitch! you be hella gay and cut your nails you nasty nigga eewww

  • @MisanthropikOne fuck you and this stupid ass nigga

  • P.S. hes dead and still make more money then you

  • @DeejayProtoss LOL. You would've been good leaving the 1st comment but leaving this proves you're a dick riding fanboy. Beat it!

  • He was about expanding his music and coming up with music that was amazing. He was about all types of music. Him and max did all there music amazingly made dope beats great sounds and can still spit great inspirational music.

  • I actually liked the album I thought it was a good change for him and he was still spitting some good lyrics 8.5 out of 10 but I respect your opinion.

  • oh and about the hair. yuor saying it like you know the dude. he had long hair as a teen too if you havent seen the pics. it wasnt as long but still was long and not a buzz. before the blaze battle and shit. your just saying shit outta your ass on this one to be honest. and you think your right. dont tell people to say shit intelligently when you arent yourself. so im not gonna be 'intelligent' if your not

  • @yaboo09 ....sigh... Yup I'm saying shit outta my ass! LOL. I have never been an Eyedea fan at all. LOL. You got me! You dumb shit. I been into him since 2000. There are a few interviews not just that one where he came off dismissing what he garnered his fanbase on.

  • @MisanthropikOne no i never said you werent into his shit. im saying how can you not give him props on this album. its fuckin amazing what they did here. and all the other stuff is just talking shit that you just assume. theres reasons for why he said what he said. you cant blame the man even if you want to say he dismissed his shit when all the fans did the same to him just for not doing what they like. he got so much shit just for trying to go outside the box and progress.

  • @yaboo09 A lot of people liked this album. I didn't. I felt he was doing all his experimental shit outside the E&A name. Which is cool. Sorta like Ice-T with Body Count. If Ice-T were to make full hardcore rock albums under Ice-T, he'd alienate his main audience. That's why he released that shit as a side project. Because his name alone carries weight. That's how I feel about every artist. Once you build a name, its hard to waver and be "experimental".

  • @yaboo09 (cont)... As for the looks issue, I know he was rocking long hair in the past. But if that's the case, then why start getting shape ups and rocking urban gear. He wouldve got the same respect rocking his hair and wearing Metallica shirts. His skills wouldve spoke for him. A perfect example is Necro. I also find it funny that both Mike and Abilities changed their wardrobe as if the previous years were a ruse. Coincidence, I think not!

  • @MisanthropikOne yea but he called himself out on that saying he played iinto a mode of hiphop thhat wasnt really him.

  • @yaboo09 that further proves my point if anything. So all that early shit was a facade? If he came out with this style in 2000, I wouldn't have an issue.

  • @MisanthropikOne No it doesnt. cuz how do you even have a clue on what he means. either way i have no way to explain to you if you dont already understand. i think he just thinks he was a kid and theres some things he wouldve done diff. and he didnt like the negativity that came with the blaze battle, like people were too serious and shit. he was playing too much into the egotistical side of hiphop when its not him type deal .

  • your a dumbass, yes your opinion is dumb as fuck, he stepped so far out of the boundaries with this one and the abilities gave him some crazy shit to rhyme to, and he put some intelligent words to them, rappers nowadays wouldnt even know what to do with a beat like that. he was talking about his artistic identity in that interview and if you didnt know all the negative things that came with when he was battling in blaze battle. he wanted to show he was more than that andnot belablednot dismis it

  • Eyedea is my favourite artist over anyone else, but I honestly gotta admit By The Throat is the album i listen to the least. From that album , "Skydiver" is fucking amazing, absolutely great and is not "rock-ish" at all. Pure, wonderful rap. The song By the Throat is, but the lyrics are god damn intense, the build up of the song is incredible, its such a powerful song though you're right, not that much hip hop in there. Though the rhymes are mad ill. Also "Smile".

  • @MisanthropikOne Ha not trying to sound intelligent just trying to spread Eyedea's message. People don't get that the life we live in is nothing more than just the exchanging, sharing & battle of human ideas. The only truth is that, there is no truth, everything is opinion, and sharing them is just life. When people say that one is wrong/right is only excepting an opinion as fact. As soon as people except the FACT that everything is OPINION, is when we'll start to respect one another with love.

  • To all the Eyedea fans that are arguing with this man's opinion, please do not get upset. If you knew what Mikey tried his whole life to teach/his message, to was to let people think how they think, empathize, cause everybody is equal. I know it may upset you as well as me to see him talk negatively about E&A, but when we get mad and say things like "Fuck you" and insult, we're contributing just as much to the problem. So you may disagree, but that's how live is, so just continue to show love.

  • @IHateStrategies Thank you. You're one of the few people that posted intelligently on here. People can't accept the fact that I have an opinion that different than theirs is.

  • Comment removed

  • I know what interview your talking about. Never did those words come out of his mouth "this is me now". I can respect what your saying when you say he should of put it out on a different name. And personally i think this is his best album. But dont fucking put words in his mouth. I think you didnt give the album a chance because it had a rock feel to it, and you should give it a second chance. the lyrics in this album are mature, you just dont get it.

  • Am sorry, but this is easily MisanthropikOne's weakest review out of any other he putted out. Either way, I still respect the dude's opinion and am still bumping Eyedea's joints.

  • MisanthropikOne@Vakill is no where near eyedeas level. Eyedea would slaughter all those rappers in a battle.. he even beat Immortal Technique.. Hopsin is even better then Has-lo.. smh markass nigga shit you stupid

  • @MadSteveo957 Ok, so you got nothing of importance to say. You just drop retarded insults because I don't like an album you like. Okay, you're a worthless troll. Eat a dick and die. BLOCKED BIYACH!!!!!

  • @MisanthropikOne Ima burst your bubble fucktard.. the individuals that you listed rhyme with an ego and Vakill and the others are better then most but thier lyrics are not as powerful.. eat a dick stupid ass house nigga! your breath stink and your nails are ugly just like your teeth haha ima give you some advise nigga... Kill yourself! ! just killyourself hahaha fucken fairy

  • Ima burst your bubble fucktard.. the individuals that you listed rhyme with an ego and Vakill and the others are better then most but thier lyrics are not as powerful.. eat a dick stupid ass house nigga! your breath stink and your nails are ugly just like your teeth haha ima give you some advise nigga... Kill yourself! ! just killyourself hahaha fucken fairy

  • @MisanthropikOne of course its my opinion you dumbass! The lyrics of By the throat are far more superior then any other album this year! your disgusted by By the throat because Mikey challenged the borders of hiphop and made them better.. my opinion has reason and its solid ground you fucken fairy

  • @MadSteveo957 Sure it is. 2011 --- Vakill, Has-Lo, Dopplegangaz, Apathy, Raekwon > Eyedea's last album. Dude stop being a butthurt fan. I didn't like it and you do, get over it. Eyedea already steeped it up with his original style he was unique and he just dismissed it like it was nothing. I'm not gonna sit here and argue with a dick riding fan who just throws out insults instead of intelligently debating. Either talk or suck a cock and die.

  • @MisanthropikOne nigga you fucken stupid

  • Eat a dick markass nigga! ! hahaha did you hit your head or something? ? I rate By The Throat 10/10

  • @MadSteveo957 That's your opinion stupid ass, LOL.

  • The first song by Eyedea I have heard was "Even Shadows Have Shadows", I didn't think much of it at the time. Later I went to go buy some albums and I was in the Hip-Hop/Rap section, and saw this album. It was the last one so I thought "why not?". I listened to all the songs and hated all of them, and I was mad I spent the money. Later that week I picked up the album and kept replaying through all the songs and listening to the lyrics, and I just CAN'T put it down. I guess his music grows on you

  • I was under this crazy impression that a genre was a generalization of certain elements combined in a musical expression, Eyedea took the purest, the darkest and the sickest parts of his brain and heart, put real emotion into music and didn't make what people wanted to hear, he made what he wanted to hear. Kurt Cobain of the 21st century, died before their true potential was fully developed and understood, every single "hip hop" song on the radio is exactly the same and this dude throws out an

  • ha id like to see you spit forgive me for my synapses. your right dude he shoulda just stayed safe in 2010 and released a lil wayne "freestyle" mixtape. he expanded this genre. WE WHAT?WE GAVE HIM WHAT? we didn't give eyedea shit. he tears up no matter who is supporting him. all recognition goes to eyedea if you know who he is. he's not making rap for his fans idiot. its HIS music you take like two goofy pictures of the dude and compare them to very serious pictures.

  • @MrGarrisonandrew07 Another hurt fan.....sigh..... If he didn't dig rap, he shouldn't have identified himself as an emcee, plain and simple. He dismissed that shit like it was yesterday's garbage. If he wanted to do the rock shit, keep it under the Carbon Carousel shit, not under Eyedea & Abilities. Sorry my opinion, don't like it? Kiss my ass first, then click the X.

  • @MisanthropikOne lemme know when you pull your style outta '94. he spit all over "by the throat"

hurt fan? i love everything the man put out. im hurt that youre too closed minded to consider by the throat rap. eyedea spits with more wisdom and speed, than big or pac could ever imagine. 'Rap a few bars..meaning 4-8 then chorus' Im sorry i must have missed that memo? did you write the rule book for how to rap and not tell me? you just really dont have much backing your argumennt guy

  • @MrGarrisonandrew07 You still won't let it go huh??? Its the format the most rap rock bands use. They rap 4 to 8 bars and hit you with the chorus. Get over it. I wasn't the only one to give this album a bad rating. Google it!!!

  • @MisanthropikOne Music reviews are the authority on what is a dope album, apparently.

Some people don't get their opinions fed to them by the machine, music reviews are really biased/subjective.

  • @MrGarrisonandrew07 lol now i KNOW for a fact you're clinically retarded.. your opinion on hip hop aint no longer valid..

  • @MackNifisent haha lemme know how that radio chasing goes my man but im gonna keep recordin tracks in the basement. life aint about hoes and dough. i dare you to make a track without a single reference to booze, bitches, guns sex drugs or violence. narrows your vocab down quite a bit. might want a dictionary with ya while youre writing that one player

  • @MrGarrisonandrew07 lol now i see you're just hatin on me without a cause, you aint listened to my music cause i dont really make songs like that.. player.. I pride myself on being versatile.. you got me mixed up with somebody else...

  • @MackNifisent hah then id pride yourself into a different directions

  • @MackNifisent

Take your wack garbage to a radio station and record some more "freestyles" clown. I listened to your music but honestly couldnt make it through an entire song about how totally thug, and drugs you are. My actual off of the top of my head free styles contend with your written garbage. I pride myself in worshiping the gods of this art. like Eyedea, and del, and aes, men with not only talent, but knowledge. dudes who expanded the boundaries of the genre

  • @MrGarrisonandrew07 lol u stupid faggot.. i do not mention not one "thug" or "drug" reference.. i bet lice is the only thing that comes off the top of your head.. lol @ worshipping another man.. what a drone.. you aint no different from the mainstream crowd you hate so much you're just on the other side of the spectrum.. you underground cats be killin me.. broaden your horizons...

  • @MackNifisent

haha you clearly took the word worship out of context to justify your point. eyedea is a lyrical god. deserves worship unlike every cat on the radio who gets it. money money money hoes bitches pussy. youre flow is great, too bad you cant generate it into any positive content. greed and sex. you are the epitome of industry rap. versatility isnt innovation. you rhyme with good pace and can switch it up off beat well. but it doesn't change your typical violent get money attitude,

  • @MrGarrisonandrew07 lol to each his own. what might be a lyrical god to you might just be lyrical garbage to somebody else..and who are you two to argue with each other? They're just opinions.. hip hop is too diverse. I'm able to float on both sides of the spectrum.. I'm able to deliver something with meaning and still make it actually entertaining to listen too cause i respect the the thought and lyrical innovation of underground artists AND the entertainment value of the "mainstream"

  • @MackNifisent

lyrical garbage? if anyone thinks eyedea is lyrical garbage they dont deserve ears. i suppose aesop just raps gibberish right? anything can have meaning idiot. fuck money get bitches, it means something but it shows a whole lot about your brain development. regardless of what youre saying or how passionate it is. its all inside the box thinking. let me hear you spit about why you think and not just what you think.

  • @MrGarrisonandrew07 I never said eyedea was garbage u dumbass. i said who are you to disagree with them if they say so? thats their opnion. its all music at the end of the day and music is art. art aint somethin that can be broken down so simple as "eydea = rap god".. or did u forget that? and lmaoooo @ "fuck money get bitches" hahaha. we all live different lifesyles.. if you're a suburban kid who grew up with whatever they want you're not gonna wanna hear about the struggle of...

  • ppl having to do what they have to do to get money. u don't appreciate the value of the dollar as much as them.. on the flip side if you're coming out of the hood you aint gonna care too much for cats rappin about neutrons and protons and periodical tables and the theory of evolution lol... my point is that is what makes hip hop beautiful.. we all have our own beliefs and interpretations of what is great about it cause we are all different yet the same... player

  • I am all that I think

I am the way that my neurons are wired

    They fire ions through electrical

synapses fusing themselves to receiving cells

building a network that only gets stronger

as I continue the thought pattern

    implied by the process

I make a decision on what to react to

what I perceive based on electrical current .... no comparrison

  • @MrGarrisonandrew07 is that one of those poems that dont have to rhyme? Ur vocab is cool tho.. reminds me of chemistry class when i was in high school...

  • @MackNifisent

i didnt say rap cab be summed up with eyedea=god. he has more credibility than god thats for damn sure. your so wrong it hurts. the value of a dollar? ok uncle sam? money is the worst thing our society has ever concocted. it fuels greed and competition. not to mention gluttony. i grew up city and suburb. and know that "the value of a dollar" isn't the meaning of life. @ the "poem" that just a segment from an eyedea song. sorry that eyedea fits more words in between his rhyme than

  • @MrGarrisonandrew07 lol we're just completely different ppl man.. cause i totally disagree with EVERYTHING you say hahaha. and im sure the feeling is mutual.. but like i said thats hip hop for u...

  • 50 cent or TI can. Music slowly stops becoming art when you radio cats talk about hoes and money. you think six foot seven foot is art? or how about lemonade? radio rap is an absolute joke. sounding like women rappin about your shoes and clothes. you would think thats a rhyme about chem class you hipster. go rhyme over some more chamillionaire beats. ha clown. @ your youtube pictures "send me LA"? you deserve that free ticket to fame homie? go out to scribble and make a name instead expecting..

  • @MrGarrisonandrew07 lol take eyedea's scrotum outta your mouth so i can understand you better..

  • for a free ride and a record deal. 70 percent of dudes probably cant battle to save their life. hip died when freestyling was defined as spitting your own words over a beat that you have no ownership of. im done arguing inside the box with you. anything mainstream can do underground probably did first, and better. except auto tune. that shit is just too bitch. even when underground cats make "radio tracks" they still blow 'im goin in' outta the water.

  • you said: "That's like me buying a Metallicas' Cd, and those motherfuckers start rapping on it", well, i dont know if you really listen to yourself, but he DIDNT SING ON THE ALBUM , HE RAPS MOST OF THE TIME, YOU FUCKING HATER.

  • @mancia10 LOL. I'm talking about how the album in general was rock based, moron! As for him rapping on it, compare his bars on this album to his previous albums. He completely went into the whole rock/rap format, like Cage did. Rap a few bars..meaning 4-8 then chorus.. Really?? I love how having an opinion makes me a hater meanwhile I own all of Eyedea's albums lolol. Its called having an opinion, look it up!!

  • @MisanthropikOne I'm just using your words, besides that's what I meant, you have right to have an opinion, but dont punish us with this bad argues in your OPINION, cause that ends looking like a hater's criticize, anyway eyedea always did music not expecting to be what public likes, now we have he's best musical reference you act very disgusting just because "He went the whole rock/rap formaT" that seems so, so hater. BUT THAT'S FUCKING MY OPINION.

  • @mancia10 Punish you with what??? I gave you an opinion, get over it!!!! If I came on here lickin Eyedea's nuts like you are, I wouldn't be honest with myself. Again, just because I like an artist doesn't mean I like everything they put out. This album sucked to me. You aren't gonna change my mind homey.

  • @MisanthropikOne if this album is three what is drakes 2010 thank me later? negative numbers would be the only justifiable answer

  • "sorta have to be prejudice....."

wtf.. this is some ignorant shit dude and you kno it

  • Man, I think you're putting too much emphasis on genre and not enough on the art-form known as music. Eyedea was never a rapper or an MC, he was an expressionist, an artist. He dismissed his achievements as a young MC because it was never his true identity, it was just who he thought he was at the time, it was a persona that led him in a direction more true to his soul. My main point is you shouldn't hate something because it doesnt live up to your expectations or notions of what it should be

  • @Baxxter101 I'm not trying to talk shit to you or say you're wrong, just saying it seems like you're wearing the blinders of genre and expectation. ALL music is (or should be) a form of personal expression, artists grow same as trees and babies do. While my favorite tracks are from "first born", this album added a whole new dynamic level to his work...

  • @Baxxter101 I mean, the only reasons you give for such a low rating are that it hit some of your pet-peeves... Yeah, the album doesn't fit into any predefined genre niche, but that is exactly how music evolves, its how new genres are created. You made the comparison to buying a Metallica album expecting to hear music you define as 'metal'. They're a mainstream band that produces sale-able sound for the masses based on a formula. They don't make music, they make a product. Eyedea made MUSIC.

  • @Baxxter101 LOL @ Metallica not making music.

  • I think he's always been a big fan of rock. I mean, on his best album (IMO), "The Many Faces of Oliver Hart", he has a skit called "Ode to The Wall". Now, I know a lot of casual listeners of hip hop have no clue what this is paying homage to and I'm not even going to bother explaining. Let me put it this way, he has great taste in music and this album is TEN TIMES better than "Rebirth", Lil Wayne's shitty attempt at a rock album. Eyedea actually understands what rock is about.

  • 3 out of 10? You should try listening to by the throat again without any preconceived notions about "genres". He really came into his own with that album. Him trying to be himself as opposed to being trendy is pretty much the theme of the album. On a side note I feel like artists should just make (good) music instead of just limiting themselves to one genre.

  • this album is golden , and is anyone doesnt understtand the album , that's their loss he was communicating a message on a much deeper level than witty punchlines , hes no longer in pain , pay him his respect and LISTEN . peace love unity and justice for all

  • haters gon hate

  • @JSuave807 ok

  • I actually think his lyrics got more relatable with "by the throat". He focused less on catchy one liners and focused more on overall meaning....he pulled the same thing as atmosphere just in a slightly different direction...if you cant appreciate the album for the sake of the art and meaning and effort, than you have a distorted view of what music is my friend.

  • @Padooshka I do appreciate the artful ish they were pulling off. But again its getting trendy and too easy to "rock out". Eyedea should've kept that shit with Carbon Carousel.

  • Actually, I like the album is not bad.

  • You're complaining about how he dressed? He was 17 when he joined the underground world. Damn him for coming into himself, and having his own style. He was about 27 in his "recent" pics. Get over it. Just cause you might wear your pants past your ass still doesn't mean everyone else who listens/performs hip hop has to once they have grown up. By the Throat is fucking solid.

  • @facelessagain ....sigh...... another one who doesn't listen. He was 17 huh? He rode that image till what....3-4 years ago? Sorry, but you just don't easily dismiss that. I'll say it again since you choose not to get my point. The "appearance" change is slowly becoming synonymous with a change in the musical style. I honestly don't care what an emcee looks like but that shit is becoming an obvious trend. PS. I don't wear my pants past my ass and I don't think Eyedea ever did :) RIP Eyedea.

  • YO EYEDEA DIED TODAY R.I.P

  • another thing bro. Fucking you can't talk bout trends now adays, and appearance changes. I ain't attacking your statement, I'm just saying this whole world is just a field where sheep roam and shit, its rare to see a shepard around you know? i mean in any culture people usually try to appear to identify with it. and some people pose to appear to identify with that culture. all in all I thought the album was good, buh eyedea isn't as cool as I thought once you see him live and meet him

  • I don't understand this rating bro. Comparing cage and eyedea as far as their musical change...I think Eyedea kept more of his ill rhymes. I mean the song by the throat is raw. burn fetish. I think he just was expressing his troubles with like abusive codependent relationships and shit. But it doesn't matter cause Eyedea is horrible live. Cause eyedea is just obnoxious and drunk. Plus eyedea doesn't even freestyle good nemore. I mean face candy is aite, buh I seen other weak shit

  • I think it is hilarious that you are getting pissed off that his music is changing. Apparently what you would like is the exact same bullshit regurgitated again and again. He dismisses the more braggadocious shit and you try to call him out on it? I believe you fully miss the point. HOWEVER, I agree with you on the oliver hart album being damn near classic and I believe this probably should have been an oliver hart album but people were fucking freaking out for him to release more E&A shit

  • @kuro5hin420 I just don't believe an artist should totally do a 180. If you want to change do it gradually. I have the same problem with Cage.

  • @MisanthropikOne The only problem is Eyedea didn't change, he just started being himself for once. While I understand that from a purely hip hop based standpoint your review is spot on, I think it is important to take a second out and actually support an artist for trying something out of the ordinary. In the interview you quoted in your review he also says that he was a metal head way before he ever started to get into hiphop. This should not be a surprise.

  • @kuro5hin420 Yeah but he built his fanbase on what he does best. You can't turn your back on that!!!!!!

  • @MisanthropikOne All you know and care about is Eyedea. You have zero clue about Micheal Larsen. Mikey truly grabbed you by the throat on this album and tried to help us all see that your image doesn't matter, it's ok to share your pain, to take time for each other, and it's ok to do what's put in your heart to do even if people like you waste precious time on this planet complaining about it. Don't let this matrix suck you in! He cared very deeply about his fans. Enough to wake them up!

  • @mattylvi Dude, the fact that he dismissed all the old shit is asinine. Do whatever is in your heart but in all honesty, that's what side projects are for

  • @MisanthropikOne He never said that to my knowledge. He did say that battles are overly negative and overtly aggressive, and that in the early years he really played into the hip hop fashions of the time, he also said he regretted that. But as far as his early music goes I have never heard him say anything. Not trying to hate though, just clarifying. Your opinion is yours to have and i do understand how the album could've been a disappointment to some of his less eclectic fans.

  • Completely agree again, just like the Cage review. The think most the viewers don't understand is your doing hip hop reviews, not rock. From a hip hop standpoint, this album totally deserves a 3 out of 10. Once again on point Mis.

I want to make a request though, I'd love to hear your views and ideas/reviews on some of the older underground albums, you know the classics. For example Cold Vein, I Phantom, etc. Keep up the great work man.

  • @TageProto303 The thing is I enjoy all types of music (metal, hip-hop, punk, etc..) but just doing an easy 180 and going rap rock is becoming trendy. Only a few can do it with soul. This album just seems like it was thrown together at the last minute.

  • Hip Hop was created for people to relate to the music. If you ask me people can relate this very well. Listen to the lyrics and enjoy. Eyedea is dope.

  • 3 outta 10!!!!! your crazy man!... It doesnt matter that its more rock influenced. LISTEN TO THE LYRICS MAN!... The song BY THE THROAT is amazing!, metaphors and all!... And its rap not rock, hes rapping, his rock group is Carbon Carousel. All i gotta say is your fucking stupid man i swear. I hate you -_-

  • @Ecuador305 LOL. I hurt an Eyedea fanboy's feelings lol. Eyedea said it himself, he's tired of hip-hop. You can hate me all you want but you know its the truth. Accept it.

  • @MisanthropikOne "your so hip hop your so punk rock cause your so so so cliche" - Eyedea

  • i dont know, i pretty much agree with him. i liked e&a because they incorporate the classic scratching with some modern sounds, by the throat was completely different.

  • I would have to agree.. I loved eyedeas music. That new album had like 2-3 good tracks and the rest were wack!!! Times change though and i think people change like the wind... I wanna see eyedea get back to what he used to do... Not be a rock weirdo....

  • I dont know if anyone mentioned it but Eyedea has a rockband already called Carbon Carousel

  • 'By the Throat' is my first E&A album, and I gotta say I loved it. LOVED it. 9/10. I liked the anger and the misanthropy. But this is my first of their albums.

Do you think if you had never heard of E&A or the album was under a different monker you'd like it better? If you had some idea that this was going to be a rap/rock album beforehand?

Because just browsing the internet, folks are split on this. Some folks are giving this 10/10, but most of them weren't fans beforehand?

  • i feel you on this, he should just stick to his shit and what hes good at to keep and build his fans.i hate when artist change like that

  • yo kid your reviews are the shit.keep um coming cuz ill be watching.u should review my rap i made at 20 bilo 0<---thats a zero so 20 bilo 0

  • I understand where you're going with the looks things, it's not so much that he changed his look, but it almost seems like he liked the look therefore changed his style, if that makes sense? but anyways, i feel you on that man. i think alot with cage was wanting to fit into that 'scene'. i know this'll get thumbed down to hell, but it's just an opinion. i have nothing but respect for dudes like eyedea, cage and yak. it's just what i see happening.

  • he had a few good songs, he does look fukin whaked up now, but first born was the best, this cd was lame

  • yea i didn't like this album...don't get me wrong...i still think eyedea might have it in him and all..but i remember his old skills...i don't know...come on guys this guys right...i want eyedea to change styles...really...but i didn't like this change..sorry eyedea :'(...

  • Eyedea was in his late teens when he was battling about ten years ago. Damn near everyone alive is not the same person when they are in the late twenties as compared to when they were a teenager. Therefore no one should be surprised if someone who puts all of himself into his work, like Eyedea does, to have changes in their output over time.

With that said, I thought this album was great. I just wish the best song( IMO ) "By the Throat" didn't remind of that damn girl I let get away haha... :-(

  • I'm going to have to agree with this comment completely. 6-7 years ago, I was lucky to have a couple of drinks with Slug and Eyedea after their set while I worked at the Knitting Factory. In the passed year, I was fortunate to have some drinks with Eyedea at The Terace where my girlfriend used to bar tend. I honestly felt like I was hangin with a boy 6 years ago and now speaking with a man. He didn't care to just make you laugh as much as he actually wanted to engage in personal conversation.

  • (continued from my first comment...)

From what I could recall, he spoke of the many drastic changes his life underwent during his "hip hop hiatus". Although he still gave an aura of positive attitude, I remember him explaining that a lot of his new understanding or so-called wisdom was gained by loss. He didn't seem to want to get into what he meant by "loss" though and so I didn't dig into it, obviously out of respect. But I guess my point is that all of this was expected.

  • There are 6 solid tracks out of 11 with very little rock influence that have sick beats and lyrics, there are 3 songs that have some nirvana sound to them, so you gave it 3 out of 10 based on those three songs and the rock influence which you mistakingly attribute to all of the songs, give it another listen with an open mind style police

  • Clearly u haven't listened to the album enough times to appreciate it and u are superficial. You have an idea in your head about rock rap, this album isn't that. Just because it's different from what he put out previously doesn't mean it sucks and should get a 3/10. You aren't listening to the content, you are just judging it based on preconceived notions. If you wanna say the music sucks then say that, don't criticize based on his look and the fact that he sings a little and has guitar riffs.

  • ....sigh.... you're superficial. You didn't hear what I said. I LISTENED to the album and didn't like it......and it is so rock/rap. His verses are sub-par and the production is on some Nirvana shit. As for everything else, I was pointing out how physical changes are synonymous with musical change. This album was a complete 180.

  • I would have gave it more of a 4-6 out of 10 and I agree eyedea's new look does get on my nerves...i saw the eyedea interview and I think he shouldn't have dismissed his MC days like that...and I think his best song on by the throat is junk

  • Eyedea also started a grunge rock band after Face Candy called Carbon Carousel. The fact that he brought some of this rock influence into his new album really isn't a surprise. I for one enjoy it when an artist changes up their style repeatedly, but I can see where others don't.

If you look at how different E&A was from First Born, is it really all that surprising that By the Throat also went in a completely random direction?

Still subbing as I always value the opinions of those who disagree.

  • Thanks. Much appreciated my brotha.

  • The beauty of hip-hop is while yes it does have a certain type of style/sound, but it can also take styles/sounds from just about every music or music culture out there. What Eyedea did was great, and Abilities production value stepped up a lot. Eyedea's lyrics weren't lack luster, if you listen and understand what he is saying and how he is saying the album is great.

  • Yo son, you just said everything. This cat pisses me off yo, i waited to long for this piece of shit album. KEEP ON SPEAKING THE TRUTH, i just subscribed yo. peace

  • I am sorry but there is nothing wrong with hip hop artist wanting to take another sound like rock into the mix. This album by the throat was good. And it isn't something new. Run DMC did it and there was nothing wrong with it then and especially not now. I don't think your rating on this was well thought out. I also heard your review on 50 cents "before I self destruct" and that got 7.5/10. When a reviewer gives a 50 cent album a way better rating then a respectable artist I have to unsubscribe

  • Well that's ok. No love lost. Its my opinion. Can Eyedea outrhyme 50?? Most definately, but the new album sucked balls to me. It wasn't the same Eyedea that has been giving us boom bap type shit. He was spitting lackluster verses and the album was seemingly more rock that rap. Well you can unsub now, my real niggaz respect my opinion.

  • I respect your opinion but I just disagree with it. Maybe I went to far saying I am gonna unsubscribe but when I got someone giving such a rash and harsh rating because image and sound changes, whatnot, I feel it is unjust. I agree, eyedea was probably not doing his best on this album. Although I think your hate for 180 change might have blinded your judgment. I guess 50 just had more of a impact on you. Maybe me being a person who doesn't like ignorant rappers like 50 just doesn't understand.

  • eyedea was one of the dopest battle rhymers from what i remember

  • I haven't heard Eyedea's new shit but if it's anything like Cage's, it'd still be a less drastic change than Cage because Eyedea sounds(sounded?) like a white emcee like slug while Cage in his good years was just a psycho emcee

  • lmao at the drastic change in appearance

  • IT'S SO TRUE!!

  • keep listening to the album its gets better after a while in my opinon.

but i also get what youre saying that he took a new direction with this one. anyways i like your reviews keep em coming

  • give credit where credit is due

  • i take the time and i really listen to this guy,i dnt jus mean about his hip hop review i mean about everything this guy talks about, from his game reviews to his rants about uva ppl bien in fucked up situations, this guy really is noticing shit that needs a decent opinion on,opinions that u wont hear from sell out pices of shit that cant speak there own mind,iv learnt alot from misanthropikone, peace!and keep bringin us that real shit here on youtube,i for one listen even if nobody else does

  • Thanks a lot. I really appreciate your support!! :)

  • best songs on the album imo

    Burn Fetish

    Forgive Me For My Synapses

    Sky Diver

    This Story

    By The Throat

and i agree with a lot of shit this dude says

  • I pretty much agree with everything you said. I do like this cd, and I think depart from me is okay, but this is not an E&A album, and DFM was not a Cage album.

  • Burn Fetish is an awesome song though, and junk is good apart from the mix bit.

  • You gotta keep listening to Cage's Depart From Me and Eyedea & Abilities By The Throat more more more and more..then its listenable...

smoking weed with that track Spin Cycle by E&A.. burn fetish is tight.. who cares...Its good music, and good lyricism.

  • Eyedea & Abilities were dope live in Hollywood

  • lol did u know eyedea had a band

  • Yeah I said it in the video.

  • Aside from face candy, he also had a rock band called Carbon Carousel. I think that's what havoc was referring to.

I totally agree with your notion that artists should use some sort of alias when they decide to branch that far out. I sometimes feels misled as a listener when I put my trust in a brand name and it's not what I expected. But, that's art.

I came to love the album after a few listens. I happened to buy it before a road trip, and got to spend some significant time with it.

  • you should obviously preview any album before you buy it. But I agree, he should have released the album under a different name cuz it's definetly a totally different style

  • I understand how this album can put you off of E&A a little bit. It's definitely their least accessible album. I think you should give this one another listen through or two though because it does grow on you. It's definitely not their best stuff but it still keeps true to their policy of releasing fresh, different shit that helps grow the genre. I also think it's not really the artists responsibility to release work that's what you expect. It's their responsibility to release quality shit.

  • Do you know what Face Candy is? Its live improvisations: bass, drums and lyrics. all of it. that doesnt impress you at all?

Second of all... dope lyrics is one thing, the meaning of those lyrics is something else. alot of Eyedea's lyrics bash the ego! why the do you think he doesnt give a shit what other people think about his image?

and how can you not like what abilities did with the music on this album. no other DJ uses the tables like he does. shit he's playing them like a piano.

  • dude just because he came with this heavy 'emo'/punk rock influence doesn't mean he "dismissed" his old shit. and he still spits the REAL shit on this album. you have to pay attention to the lyrical content.

on the other hand, everytime eyedea 'sings' on the disk- i have to skip ahead, other than that this is the deepest, best written, best executed album of the year. this and Jay Stay Paid all day

  • No. In his interviews he acts like his old shit was just a phase.... "Oh that was just some 17 year old shit". Yeah, that's what we know u for!!!!

  • totally agree wit you my nucca

  • lol @ you getting "pissed off." Just because you don't get this album doesn't mean that you should get pissed off about it. I mean I respect your viewpoint on this but I think that you getting pissed off is a bit over the top.

  • Well I'm a a super hip-hop fan. When the artist starts dismissing shit that made him/her what they are (namely the fans), yeah, that def. grounds for me being pissed off.

  • If he really "dismissed" it as you say, then they wouldn't even bother performing those songs live, and they do. I saw the interview you're talking about and I'm pretty certain that was just Eyedea being a jackass -- he tends to do that, just like the rest of the Rhymesayers crew.

  • ight im giving my opinon on this whole situation. Ive listened to eyedea for what seems like forever I love his lyrics. He is so fucking dope. Abillities beats flow perfectly with him.

The music on their new album is good, but its just not the same, I cant connect with it. It doesnt feel right. I hope that he will go back to his old ways. Fuck this new shit give us oliver hart 2.

Anyways I subscribed to you, you give good fucking reviews.

  • "by the throat" is a fucking classic fuck what anyone says...

  • lol. ok buddy

  • necro is cool

  • hey have you heared of necro the underground rapper

  • Yeah...in fact I just download his bootleg ish called "Forgotten Corpses". I been into Necro for a minute now.

  • You said that if you bought a Metalica record and they did a 180 that youd be pretty unhappy. I couldnt agree more, but in regards to BTT, its not THAT much different from their other work. You still have hardcore raps (not battle oriented of course) and you can tell how Abilities producing has grown FROM E&A. BTT sounds a lot like rock but overall it is totally reminiscent from their previous records. of course it perfectly understandable if you just dont like the sound of their new music

  • But now that I think about it...I like cage's new album more than Hell's winter and Movies for the blind so maybe i just like the rock beats i can't even tell cause i listen to everything underground sage slug aes everything but my two favorite are by the throat and depart from me.

  • Well there needs to be balance. Lyrics, beats, production & delivery. I love lyrics as well but if there are dope lyrics and wack beats or production, that takes away from the album severely.

  • So say "By The Throat" was their first album...Would you like it, or would you still not like it cause it's like 2 different genres?

  • Eh...it depends. To me, the album just seemed short and thrown together quickly. So maybe not. I really don't like 180s no matter what the genre is.
