I love classic scenes like this; you can feel the sexual tension, but surprise surprise, no one got naked, no one's sucking someone's face off and no one's jumping around on the bed like a wild animal. Now that's acting.
@baconpoptarts SOOOOh TRUE....We don't really know what stars look like behind their botox....It's just like their acting.....fake...They just don't have the style of yesterday...I know know why I can't get into actors of today...I compare them to real acting of the past...Thanks to YT..I can have them again
I could use all these lines, but they only work in the internet for me. Just try saying things like that without a Bacall look - it freezes you and melts you at the same time. The only things I can melt are opportunities - except with married guys, of course. These are like desperate shoe sellers - you're always gorgeous as long as you're not their wife.
YOU JUST PUT YOUR LIPS TOGETHER AND BLOW. I love bogies nervous laugh at times in his movies. If you watch his movies enough you will notice this laugh, usually around the mention of drinking. bogie loved to drink. I watched so many of his movies so many of times I have alot of the movie lines memorized.
The reason they call each other Steve and Slim in this movie is because these were the pet names the director of this movie and his wife called each other in real life. They discovered Lauren Bacall and using the pet names was a nod to them in the movie.
Howard Hawks did sort of a remake of this movie with John Wayne and Angie Dickinson called Rio Bravo. Dean Martin was the Walter Brennan character, but Walter Brennan was in both movies... I guess you'll just have to watch one and then the other and enjoy!
I was forcing some of my friends to watch this with me the other week. We all came to the same conclusion, "They don't make 'em like that anymore." I think we were all talking about Bogie and Bacall and not the movie.
Lauren Bacall (who is only 19 here!) was indeed extremely sexy in this film. No wonder Bogie (25 years her senior) fell in love with her! Who wouldn't? But why does she call Bogie's character "Steve" in this movie, but yet Walter Brennan calls him "Harry"? Inquiring minds want to know! In any case, THANKS for posting these delightful clips for us to enjoy! :)
@rameyerguam This is Howard Hawks, the Director who did that....Howard "Harry", who at the time, was married to Slim Hawks, the woman who first noticed Bacall on Mag. Cover. Hawks had a 'thing' for Bacall. Their characters names were "Steve" & "Marie". Hawks was living through the two of them, thus the changes.
This is also why Bogie & Bacall named their son, "Stephen" and not "Harry". It was after the character in 'To Have and Have Not', and not Hawks fantasy! Cheers.
Bogart's character WAS named Harry. Steve was short for stevedore. Bacall's character would have been an upper class New York girl,(who had fallen somewhat from grace) - and she would see Harry as a "roughneck from the waterfront" - in short, a stevedore.
Steve is short for Stephen on who's feast King Wenceslas looked out. Bacall's character would have realised that Harry was a descendant from Henry VIII. She, being catholic would have been rightly outraged. Feigning love for him, she enticed him to an apiary where he was stung to death clutching a rosebud to his heart murmuring 'grauniad-----'.
When Bogie and Bacall's characters first meet they give each other nicknames. He calls her Slim and she calls in Steve in reply to him calling her Slim. Then throughout the rest of the movie they call each other by theses nicknames
she was soooo cool! My favorite is "what are you trying to do guess her weight? lol. So great to have a woman in a film as cool, suave and badass as a man like Bogey.
Quite true. This was her breakthrough debut, and it caused quite a stir. To be so young, she no only talks like she is well beyond her years but by the cool way she carried herself also.
Bogie was the luckyist man on earth...I just can not imagin making love to her....oh my God...He had it all and more.....We just get it see a few fleeting seconds of her yummy powers.....She brings tears to my eyes......I am just so taken by her...there are no words....Betty just melts me...The "look" thing kills me.....You might as well run me over with a Mack truck......
I love the "guess her weight" line. I cracked up when I heard it. Bacall sure knew how to deliver her lines. You don't see her kind of talent much these days.
Don't you think Lauren was robbed of the Oscar in 96'? It was her first ever nomination, and she lost to Juliette Binoche. Binoche was in the better movie, and gave a good preformance, but that Oscar should have been for Lauren's career not that specific preformance. I just can't believe that the Academy would pass up a chance to to give it to the great Bacall. The only reason Binoche won was because of the tireless campiagning for her movie. But, c'mon!
You know what?.....I think all her best lines were said in privte with out cameras and the best part of all was they were'nt lines. Only one man heard those. I think if she looked me in the eyes and told me "I love you with all my heart"......I would explode.....
This movie is neither the first nor the last time that Hawks would use the "all you have to do is ask me" line. Jean Arthur said it to Cary Grant in Only Angels Have Wings, and Angie Dickenson to John Wayne in Rio Bravo, among others. The answer is always the same: "I wouldn't ask anyone for anything." Of course, they all end up with the girl anyway. lol
She had no training as an actress but was coached by Slim Hawks the director Howard Hawks' wife.
