im curious how do violin get the kinda thick sound like oistrakh's violin... is it cause the violin is super old ?? its like as if playing on sul G throughout the whole piece
I love to know how you do it........i am just repairing this time with guitars and violin....i have spend most my time in learning how to play guitar and violin and its been late i know that repairing and making will be my passion and livelihood for a lifetime.....goodluck to you thanks for sharing your knowledge I wish to know the things you know......
I think you should try making classical guitars! Sure, it is different, but please don't leave us (guitarists) alone!!!! Anyway I think you make great intruments!!!! Good luck!!
as a lither you are a Meir copyist a craftsman the artist is the one you copy. the secret is not being true to the methods it is being true to the artistry of design. and that is why you as a craftsman always copy.
I'm in the process of building my first violin from a kit. I would really love to see more information on the complete details of the varnishing process. I'd like my violin to have a beautiful and deep finish but it's difficult to find detailed instructions.
The shape is that of a baryton, however the baryton has two sets of strings. The viola da gamba we see on painting such as the one in Santa Cecilia has 6 or 7 strings. The baryton has 24 sympathetic strings, it was made in a few pieces for prince Esterhazy. The question remains, what is it? In my opinion it is a hybrid instrument, a four strings gamba.
VERY interesting video of a violin maker carving, planing, filing, sanding and varnishing his instruments, all while explaining what he is doing and why. Beautifully varnished in the end by a craftsman who truly enjoys his art.
A must see... Excellent post. Thank you Baronvitta!
I love the title. It's like the saying, "Champagne made in California!"

@1stab how does that make sence???
joel5623333 2 months ago
@joel5623333 Champagne is made exclusively in that part of France. There is one Cremona as far as violin making and that is in Italy.

What grade of sandpaper he uses to sand the varnish? From the sound it makes sounds like a thick grade.
Max0Inq 9 months ago
@Max0Inq I usually use sandpaper grades 400 to 800. I sand very lightly between coats.
baronvitta 9 months ago
@baronvitta Thanks. True, 800 is very fine (in both meanings of this word :) ).

I know it would probably be unorthodox but is it possible to build a violin out of an aromatic wood such as Cedar

i came across this video for a school project. now i want to learn to play the violin

That's a beautiful viola you just made.
A violin is usually smaller. I like playing
one when I have the chance. I can play any
instrument except the drum set.

Wow, you really know your stuff! Can you make a copy of an Amati, 1566?
