Three DB railway workers who had been working near the bridge were killed instantly when the derailed car crushed them. The tearing of the wagon hitches caused automatic brakes to engage and the mostly undamaged cars 1 to 3 (as well as the front locomotive) came to a halt at the Eschede train station, some three kilometers (two miles) down the track. As the second half of car number 5 passed under the bridge, the bridge collapsed and fell on the car, flattening it completely.
The rear axles of car number 3 were switched onto parallel track, and the entire car was thereby thrown into the piers supporting a 300-tonne roadway overpass, destroying them.
Car number 4, likewise derailed by the violent deviation of car number 3 and still travelling at 200 km/h (125 mph), passed intact under the bridge and rolled onto the embankment immediately behind it.
As the train passed over the first of two track switches, the embedded wheel rim slammed against the guide rail of the switch, pulling it from the railway ties. This steering rail also penetrated the floor of the car and became embedded there, lifting the axle carriage off the rails. At 10:59, one of the now derailed wheels struck the points lever of the second switch, changing its setting.
Trains use less fuel than cars. Oil companies give money to charity and create jobs. This accident is proof that we need less trains and more cars. Waste creates jobs. Efficiency does not.
what are you stupid or something. Oil companies exploit natural resources. And what little pitence they donate to charities doesnt do all that much. Trains are a invaluable transportation resource, which not only lower polution, but help to move vast amounts of people over distances.

Yeah but a real man drives a truck not some jap crap or riding public transit. And if we use less resources all the soldiers in the middle east will get laid off. I'll admit, all we want is the oil. But if we make the country fuel efficient it will hurt jobs.
I'm guessing you're being sarcastic right? Trains on average are several thousand times safer than cars, but not as safe as airplanes. But airplanes are far more expensive to operate.
Actually whether planes are safer than trains depends on how you do the statistics: Crashes per traveled kilometer - plane wins. Crashes per traveled hour - train wins. Cars of course loose badly any way you look at it.
Hmm, interesting, I've only heard about the per traveled kilometers comparison. Thanks for the info. I always thought that the U.S. built extensive highways instead of passenger rails because of the powerful automobile industry that bought out most of the private lines. A better passenger rail network could really benefit the congested coastlines.
Someone told me of a case where GM and Ford bought a profitable railway, dismantled it and sold it to Mexico. The train line between Albuquerque and Santa Fe. You can still see the track where the rails where along the river there. So, yeah, I guess the car companies did not just provide the better product ...
A steel tire got caught in a turning point. It got totally stuck. The steel is fitted round a full metal wheel in order to improve the drive - less bumpy.
I remember that. I just came home when I turned on the news and was confronted with those images. Horrifying is all I can say. May their souls rest in peace
