  • Haha I love the bass guitarist, John Taylor:) He'll aways be a Duranie in heart:)

  • murdoc? it isnt michael desbarres?

  • this remind me that what hardrocker think that a discodrummer like tony thompson played with led zeppelin in live aid and they want him to tour, i mean they think theyre really hard guys hahahahahahhahahahhahah lol

  • the group that has lasted at least rock

  • Hey! That's not Robert Palmer?!? Though,He Moves Like Jagger. He Moves Like Jagger ;P

  • No offence to fans but Michael Des Barres is a horrible singer and this is an amazing band Tony Thompson,John and Andy Taylor ......dude you gotta bring it....very dissapointing Michael

  • Robert Palmer was alot better than this guy.....JT looks HOT though :P

  • no powerful voice... but like john taylor :P

  • this is nothing but crap...crap....crap

  • Durans fan base didnt want to look at robert palmer or Michael des barres, old men--but now it gives them credability.

  • I WOULD LIKE TO THANK "ADAM ANT" FOR TAKING THE TIME TO TOUR WITH THE POWER STATION........lol

  • Robert Palmer should have stayed and toured with the Power Station. Then he could have went to the studio to do Riptide. just my opinion. Michael Des Barres Vocals just don't cut the icing on the cake. worthy effort though.

  • Michael Des Barres is a British actor and rock singer. He was on the re casted version of WKRP, mentioned in the Led Zeppelin book "Hammer Of The Gods", After relocating to Los Angeles, he formed the band Detective in 1975. They recorded two albums that were released on Led Zeppelin's Swan Song Records label, before breaking up in 1978. Married Legendary Groupie Pamela Des Barres and they had a kid, read her books and see the pictures.

  • He's the villain, Alex', in Movie "Pink Cadillac"

  • 5:03 Best View Ever In all

  • Micheal Des Barres as "Murdock" in Macgyver? That's is true?

  • Michael Des Barres is who toured with Power Station, Robert Palmer didn't. I saw them in concert, he did a decent job but would have preferred Robert Palmer.

  • Its not the same without good old king Robert...

  • this shit roks! who feels me?

  • Without Mr. Palmer, it sounds very different. But, thank God there's an Amazing John Taylor right there!

  • Michael Des Barres AKA Murdoc From Macgyver!

  • Good bass line, but dont they look awful, lol

  • is that tony thompson? i can't tell whether the drumming is so bad or whether the three amateurs drag him down. michael des barres hits not a single note right, andy taylor grooves like he gets beaten sticks against his knees and hasn't had his rheuma medicine. his brother on bass... only he hears what metrum he's playing to. from one of the greatest rock albums in the 80s to a hump of sh/t..

  • @naechsterarzttermin Yes it is the late great Tony Thompson..

  • @naechsterarzttermin I remember beeing angry with this version of the band, but today i realized that live recordings on those days sound very poor if it was made through a tv transmition system. But, the musicians are quite good. An important data you need to know is Andy and John are not brothers or relatives, they are just partmers at work and friends.

  • OMG!! the outfits!! the long cloaks--do you remember those!! and the hair!!! ALL the hair! This is a prime example of the 80's man!!! Love it or Hate it--it is our history!! How fun to watch--yay YT!!

  • poor michael, he would have been great on his own and is serviceable here but man, its a HUGEEEE leap from palmer to this guy. like going from michael jackson to celine dion. not bad overall, but its such a freakin leap!

  • WTF? I have the LIVE AID 85 DVD set and why the heck isn't this set on the damn concert DVD? BTW, they should've freakin performed Some Like It Hot. I dont get that either. Sheesh!

  • Robert Palmer was much better! May he R.I.P.

  • I saw them live on tour, and they sounded much better than this. To this day, it is still the LOUDEST concert I've ever been to, and I'm comparing it to AC/DC, Ozzy, Whitesnake.....RIP TONI AND ROBERT

  • Lead singer is good, but give me Robert Palmer

  • This singer takes the wind out of their sail

  • all this talk about Robert Palmer when the important thing here is how long JohnTaylor's hair is. C'mon people.......focus !

and his bass on this is brilliant

  • all this talk about Robert Palmer when the important thing here is how long JohnTaylor's hair is. C'mon people.......focus !

  • Cherish this video. JFK stadium isn't there in Philadelphia anymore. It was razed in the 90s.

  • @stolehome66 holy shit r u kidding me??! 80's has the best music AROUND

  • yeah, michael des barres isn't bad, but power station is robert palmer.

  • Suck an underrated singer. Michael Des Barres is great.

  • Michael Des Barres IS a chemist btw, he's wearing his lab coat on stage

  • You should check out that guys solo career.. 'someone up there loves me' is fantastic

  • The unfair situation with powerstation was the vocolist on the album choose not to tour. So, it didn't matter how hard this guy worked his arse off. It was a crime IMHO.

  • 1980s = bad fashion and bad music.

  • Gotta be Palmer or it sucks. Sorry. Voice and suave ain't there with this barroom hasbeen.

  • Im just waiting for MacGyver to come on stage and kill Murdoc as he used to

  • I remember watching this live. My girlfriend asked, "what's with that look on your face". I didn't know what to say. Never expected Michael Des Barres to be singing. Stunned and disgusted was the look, I guess. :)

  • This guy was an ass-rocker before Jon Bon jovi.....what an ass clown tool.....Palmer was much better than this douche.

  • Long white coat . . . he looks like a Chemist.

  • MICHAEL DES BARRES SAW HIM HERE; TOTALLY ROCKED! HE TOOK OVER WHEN ROBERT PALMER DECIDED HE DIDN'T WANT TO TOUR.

  • De Barres makes me cringe but I only watch this because two of my favorite Taylors are on stage! Robert Palmer, why why oh why did you not do this???

  • I could never figure out why in the world Robert Plant could not have at least performed with the band for Live Aid! This guy is a joke......

  • @beachgal26

That would be Robert Palmer, Robert Plant is with Led Zepplein.

  • Robert Palmer was THE voice. However, I saw Power Station live three times. Des Barres was electric live. And I thought it was PERFECT that they performed Palmer's "Some Guys Have All The Luck" (YES.... Robert PALMER recorded it) in concert.

  • Michael Des Barres yes I knew he looked familiar!

  • They just couldn't do it without Robert Palmer. This guy didn't even LOOK right up there beside someone like the Taylors. The music was good, as expected from who was playing the instruments. The singing was HORRIBLE!! What were they thinking when they put this guy out front .... oh, never mind, they obviously WEREN'T. Oh well, everyone makes mistakes sometimes.

  • @offamychain Everything sounds good when your on cocaine 24/7! haha

  • the sad part about the first live aid was that it didn't even cause a dent in the severity of the famine that was going on at the time and still going on to this day..the 2nd really didn't do much either, accept raise awareness..people in the 80's were flying on coke and just wanted to have a good time, which means they didn';t even realize the true concept of what the concert was for in the first place ..still , great memories !

  • lol !! i seen michael des barres on an episode of seinfeld, when he played the maitre D at a restaurant where the valet had B.O. !!! anyone remeber or seen that episode !..and anyone know why the hell robert palmer didn't do live aid ?..what the hell !..?

  • @blica1 - He wasn't touring with Power Station.

  • lol dog from scum of the earth, wkrp. im a rock and roll hoodlum with a black leather glove, love is murder, murder is love, step on my face and lets blow up this place

  • Tony Thompson on drums, Murdoc (Macguyver's nemesis) on vocals; this is great stuff.

  • I´m NOT Amused !!! ;-(((

  • Freakin' hyrda - get your teeth offa me!

  • I'm going to get in trouble - first, The Power Station is only good with Robert Palmer fronting it. Having said that, this performance after watching it properly for the first tie in 25 years is, surprisingly, good and energetic. I thought Duran Duran's performance later was good too.

  • The album version of "Get It On" just absolutely rocks. Here, it just doesn't pop like it does on the cd. Also, it's beyond bizarre to see MacGyver's chief nemesis Murdock fronting Power Station here. Apparently, Robert Palmer only sang live with the original 80's incarnation of Power Station once, on SNL, in early 1985. If someone could post that footage, it would be definitely appreciated.

  • Micheal Des Barres was at Duran reunion show at LA's Roxy, July, 2003. I met him :)

  • this is pretty painful to watch...

  • For starters...Robert Palmer is NOT singing?

  • this version of murderess is so different from the album

  • leodresselli,are u kidding?,will there be a L A II?,i just gots to know.

  • Two damned fine tracks in a row. "Tony Thompson" one awesome drummer R.I.P. (1954-2003)

  • @fortheloveoftunes AMEN TO THAT!!!

  • Ooooooh, I hate to do this to Mike, but he was in a Led-Zep-owned deal in the late '70s called Detective. (I did lights for them several times; got to meet his famous sister.) People called the band "Defective." (Okay; I owe you one, bud.)

  • @naughtmoses Famous sister?

  • @dharmaseed Pamela Des Barres wrote the book, I'm With the Band, and became the most famous "groupie" of her day.

  • @naughtmoses Pamela is actually Michael's wife. Her maiden name was MIller.

  • So why didnt robert palmer play with them here???

  • cause he was in the bathroom....lol

  • @tmwnat He was recording the album Riptide at the time.

  • Tony Thompson RIP.

  • DeBarres is a much better actor than he is a singer.

  • i agree

  • in other words for to be a singer he¨s a good actor....personally i loved Robert´s voice

  • this did not make it to the DVD set, for whatever reason, does anybody know?

  • you can get live aid on dvd now . just check ebay .

  • It's a bad performance.

  • They only allow 2 songs from each group. So Murderess was omitted for Some Like It Hot and Bang a Gong. However LIVE AID II is coming out next year with a bunch of extras.

  • andy taylor great guitarist..shame they gave him the sound of an electric banjo meets telecaster!

  • Being a HUGE fan of this now defunk band I have to say that THIS SUCKS BIG MONKEY COCK IN HELL!!!

  • Power Station with Palmer was a killer combination, what a shame that didn't last; I always wondered why this combo didn't work for me, I think much of it comes down to Michael is trying too hard - and sadly, Tony, who's a bloody god, is rushing the groove. RIP Tony & Robert

  • Yeah that's what I thought Tony is RUSHINAMAZING on drums.

And forgiveme for not knowing shit about drums but I love how his drums are more like a hearbeat ''cuph'' sound than just the ''cush'' sound you hear in every other drum, in guitar is the tone but I suposse in drumms it comes from the way you play that makes the disonance go off much faster than usual.

Portnoy can do this as well so he's one of my favorite drummers too.

  • Normally Tony's rock solid, you could set your watch to him - but something seems to have messed up his confidence during this performance - maybe it was Zeppelin trainwreck? God, what a shame that got messed up.

  • Man, whatever anybody says this singer SUUUUUCKS. Robert Palmer was the man for the job, whatever everybody says about Des Barres.

  • MacGyvers arch nemesis, aka Murdoch

  • I got the ten hour DVD set of this and this ain't on there And i'm ticked because thats something worth watching instead of Madonna and who ever else is on there

  • I remember Palmer commenting on the BBC I believe that he was NEVER asked to tour. He was actually taken aback at being replaced. His solo stuff had nothing to do with it. Des Barres was chosen because of an apparent riff that the Taylors perceived.

It was a shame too because this band had some real potential. Tony Thompson was an incredible drummer with a heavy sound that was clearly his. Palmer was unlike any vocalist of his time. RIP both of you!

  • robert palmer was a great singer, and a great musician

  • @pastorsc01 Robert Palmer DID tour with the Power Station. I saw them live at a bar called Missisipi nights in St. Louis Missouri. Sadly John Taylor was not with them, but Tony Thompson, Andy Taylor and Robert Palmer all three were there. This was years after Live aid, but it did happen.

  • No Palmer, NO interest!

    :(

  • @gablober Obviously you were interested since you watched this and bothered to comment.... ;)

  • Palmer is an icon. No placeable member!

  • Power Station without Robert Palmer just doesn't do anything for me.

  • @Keruaran I could not agree more.

  • Michael Des Barres was also Pamela Des Barres husband who was quite a Lady if uknow what I mean. Michael always fell short of the fame many of his peers acquired. A great actor and quite a cool guy. In my opinion one of the greatest acts of Live Aid. The comparisons with Robert Palmer are ludicrous since they are both two very distintc and very capable singers. Get it on - bang a gong really rocks with him on vocals

  • Andy rocks!

  • Whos singing here?

  • It is Micheal Des Barres. :)

  • not Robert Palmer. what must it be like to have that many people watching you sing and perform?

  • He might have been going by the pseudonym "Michael Des Barres" during this era, but I'll always know him by his REAL name: "Dog", and the best musical act that he ever had anything to do with: "Scum of the Earth"!!!

  • anybody else notice how many "british bands" played at JFK that day. Power Station,Black Sabbath,Judas Priest,Thompson Twins,Simple Minds,Pretenders,Eric Clapton,Led Zeppelin,Duran Duran&Mick Jagger....not enough American acts wanna play in the hot july sun hmmm

  • not quite the same without the late great Robert Palmer.

  • There was probably enough cocain in each of them to keep all of South America's drug industry flourish for the next decade!

  • did i miss something, where's palmer

  • Robert Palmer did not want to tour. The Power Station was more of a studio project for Palmer.

  • The reason they toured was becouse the album did so good but Robert was commited to his album and tour. So they got Michael Des Barres who has been around forever(Detective,Cheaqured Past,etc..). He also is an actor.

  • Andy Taylor could get in to ANY band......brilliant guitarist!

  • Power Station was bad!!! the Taylor brothers holdin rythem and bass,Michael Des Barres working the crowd sure at times he was flat but Mr.Thompson(RIP)is hands down one of the best drummers there have ever been"SOLID".anybody remember him from "CHIC"?

  • John and Andy Taylor are not brothers !!!!!

  • Calm down luv. Unfortunately, even after 20+ years, people STILL think they are brothers. Can't help the ignorant.

  • @SimonsArena Yes in this day and age people should check - what happened to Googling? I have seen John and Andy on the same stage in Duran Duran and they ain't, just surprised after 30 years this still is thought as true.

  • @SimonsArena You're wrong! They ARE brothers! Brothers in Rock and Roll! 4-ever!!!! ;-)

  • Taylor brothers?Ha ha ha.Andy and John Taylor are NOT related!

  • Tony Thompson had what was, to me, an addictive style; I could listen to hm playing on just about anything. Just incredible. And yes, I remember him from Chic.

  • I remember watching this back in the day and being disapointed that Robert Palmer was not there. I did not know who Michael Des Barres was at the time.

One of my all time favorite drummers, by the way.

  • Micheal Des Barres played Martin Mull's first lover on the t.v. show, Roseanne. Des Barres was also the sunglasses wearing kid in the 1967 Sidney Potier film, To Sir, With Love.

  • there is no replacement for robert palmer.

  • and noone compares to Michael Des Barres

  • He did SNL, but ddin't want to tour.

  • They REALLY needed Robert Palmer!

  • where was Robert Palmer, how come he was replaced.

  • he left 2 focus on his solo career, because being a member of Power Station opened that door 4 him, I wish he would've stayed with them, but it is what it is.

  • He was actually a huge artist already and had many hits in the 70s and 80s BEFORE Power Station

  • Micheal Des Barres is an acceptable replacement for Robert Palmer, but this song is kinda flat.

  • The singing is truely AWFUL....

The singer seems so silly while(trying)sing.

Someone should have handed Andy Taylor a distortion pedal before going on stage.

  • Isn't that Murdoc from "MacGyver"?

  • Wasn't Adrian Belew ( King Crimson ) the ORIGINAL guitarist in Power Station ? He wasn't on the album though.

  • No. But, that would be absolutely killer. I love Belew!

  • andy taylor is the guitar?????????????

  • the guitar sounds like a tennis racket.

  • yeah the sound is bad!!!

  • yes.

  • Yeah and the biography is a belter too, it starts off in Live Aid.

  • I remember seeing this when it was on tv. I was SO disappointed with the "singer" they chose to fill RP's place. There was no announcement in the weeks before that he wouldn't be there, only after Live Aid did an explaination come forth. It was horrible.

John looked cute as hell as always, Andy was rockin' out, and Tony was cool, cool, cool. I got to meet T.T. in person in '88 and he was the sweetest guy ever. All I wanted to do was talk about John Taylor- how lame of me- but Tony didn't mind!

  • what is song nuber 1?

  • Bangyourhead19; Song is Murderess from The Power Station disc.

  • Sad shell of what they formerly were. Michael Des Barres was, at the MOST, a C class singer/star.

  • who the heck is this singer?? aint power station i knew

  • Michael Des Barres. Old Robbie Palmer dropped out to head to a studio to record his solo album - apparently

  • Many Live Aid performances were a bit rough as there were no soundchecks. Bands were herded onto the stage, herded off, then the next one. All acts should be commended as it raised millions for charity. Some people argue that it helped some bands' careers - but only a couple. Over 95% of the acts at Live Aid got no career boost from it. I think The Power Station only played cos Duran Duran were playing later - John and Andy were there anyway. That day was Andy's final appearance with Duran Duran.

  • Somewhere at about 5:55, I turned this off...in NO WAY did he replace my Robert Palmer...no way..no way..no freakin' way!

Miss you even MORE now Rob....

  • utube -your right. This is such a thin performance. Not being ready is one thing, sounding like a cheap piece of crap is another. The lead singer sounds forced, and the synths.....well.....

  • como se llama la primera cancion molaaaaaaaaaaaa el tio este tiene un poco cara rata pero da igual jajajajaja mola

  • Exactly

  • i prefer robert palmer's voice

  • God, this is awful! I can see why they decided to call it a day after Robert Palmer left and I can see why the Power Station is not included in the dvd release. This is laughable!!!

  • not thesame without Robert Palmers vocals

  • Power Station was my very first rock concert!

  • ....Michael Des Barres-Ireally prefer Palmer as a singer...mmmh,reminds me of my disappointment about missing robert palmer as the singer of power station...sigh...really a long time ago....

  • I totally agree. The Power Station LP with Palmer was very cool. His vocal style and onstage persona were very hard, if not impossible to replace. Palmer exuded a cool demeanor topped with a from-the-gut growl. Des Barres was your typical rock singer, blasting high notes and running all over the stage. Don't get me wrong - Des Barres was very good in Detective, but his substitution in the band was like putting on a pair of Wal Mart sneakers in place of Air Jordans.

  • Andy Taylor should have used a guitar on this day...instead of the two bob tennis racket sound he's got..but I rate the fella

  • I loved the album they put out . Bang a gong was good in this video. I liked tonys playing a lot better with chic. Groovin and in the pocket. He's rushin all his feels. I sorry he and Robert passed. A lot of people unaware

  • yeah I like this album too!! great stuff..but I think besides this being too fast, the audio is probably off because of the different sources to the mics? sounds like a lot of delay...who knows what kind of monitor nightmares they had that day! freakin' chaos...watched it live on TV...what a culmination of talents though...good luck doing that today without spending a trillion dollars on makeup artists for Beyonce!! haha

  • I remember seeing Power Station in '85. Tony Thompson's drumming resonated in my ears for weeks afterwards. I had bought tickets prior to Robert Palmer's departure from the tour. I really wanted to see the 4 of them "get it on". It was a good show anyhow with MDB.

  • John and Andy...BRUMMIES!!!

  • In fact..Andy was from Newcastle

  • This is a fantastic performance - Andy Taylor meshed with Tony T - lovely.

The reason why this is not on the Live AID DVD is that Palmer and Tony had passed away - I've heard that they could not get consensus with the families to put it on DVD.

Also - John Taylor since 1985 adamantly refused to videotape and commercially releases any Power Station live performance. He just admitted to that last year in an interview.

  • Thank you for that information. :)

  • Robert Palmer was no longer in Power Station when they performed in Live Aid . He`d gone back to pursuing his solo career whilst the band went on tour in USA with Michael Des Barres - this is Michael Des Barres led Power Station so I cant see that Palmer`s death had anything to do with its non appearance on the LA dvd.

  • I'm tony's sister and last surviving member of the thompson family. i was never consulted about any dvd. Thanks for the info anyway.

  • Hi - you're brother was indeed one of the best drummers ever. I was really hoping that Duran would have elected to take him as their drummer when Roger Taylor left the band in 86'. Tony could liven up a rock show like no other!

    He's still sorely very missed.

  • My condolences to you, truely Tony was a genius of his own right. From one drummer to another, I loved his style, power and grace;it was like no other and I will miss his playing but cherrish what he gave us. Thank you Tony Thompson!!

  • It is a pleasure to chat with you!!!! Your brother was an AMAZING musician!!!! From Chic to Bowie to The Power Station, he brought IT every time. Not mention he always looked SOOO COOL!!!!

  • John Taylor, of course.

  • okay at first i didnt mind des barnes cause he imitated robert palmer on song one, but by song two he was totally out of control

  • yeah, not on the DVD. I can see why. Godspeed Mr. Palmer. You freakin ruled.

  • How bout it. I guess I didnt miss much when I didnt see them on Live Aid........hahaha! Robert Palmer was the shit and it goes to show on this video how he was missed!! Thanx though.

  • Without Robert Palmer it's just even close.

  • Did I catch a glimpse of Nick Rhodes playing keyboards on "Get it On"? There were only a couple of moments when it showed the keyboard player briefly, but it certainly looked like him.

  • It's not Nick, it does look like him though. You can see a good close up of the keyboard player at minute 3:05
