I believe in the nirvana version Dave Grohl sang, played the guitar and the drums. and they recorded it whilst waiting 2 days for Kurt Cobain to show up!
@LOVEAapjes no nirvana had other members like chad channing back in 1989 he was the original drummer then got replaced with dave grohl. there was also krist novoslic and kurtcobain
This has a little of the nirvana unplugged feel to it.. i was at the show the night before this DVD.. i already liked the foo fighters and Dave Grohl a lot before this but this show made me fall in love with them.. Dave Grohl is no doubt the most talented musician of our time...
This is not a Nirvana song it is a Dave Grohl song released on Stopwatch by Late, Dave Grohl's project prior to Foo Fighters. Nirvana covered this song .It was first recorded in 1991 prior to the release of Nevermind. The Stopwatch album is an amazing realese just search it and decide for yourself.
@jjvince1 No its a nirvana song because the song was wrote when he joined nirvana cause on one of the videos he even comes out and says that he wrote Marigold and Friend of a friend while living with kurt cobain next to kurts turtles
@jjvince1 It's called Pocketwatch, not Stopwatch.. But other than that, you're right. Pocketwatch was released in 1991. The Nirvana version came out 3 years later.
i'lll always have mixed emotions on what grohl did post nirvana. just questions no one can answer but i don;t think he'd ever been a frontman without teen spirit & cobain's brains splat is all.
@r0ksta82 Nirvana played together for the first time since the death of Kurt Cobain, at a last-minute Foo Fighters show at Paladino's in Tarzana, California. This concert was recorded for a documentary. While new material from the band's forthcoming album was aired, the biggest surprise was kept for the encore. Grohl made his way behind the drum kit, and he and Smear were joined onstage by Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic for a version of the 1993 Nirvana B-side "Marigold"
@PivotMakeranimations Im pretty sure its just a new way of performing his song. if i write a song and then show it to my band and we play it its not a cover.
I believe Grohl wrote this before he joined Nirvana since it's on one of his early demos but the version on the "Heart Shaped Box" single was recorded during the "In Utero" sessions.
@student251192 The original was not a Nirvana song, it was released by Dave on his Pocketwatch album.
I therefore can't see it as a cover because it was originally written and recorded by Dave Grohl, as was the entire first Foo Fighters album, all that has changed is the band that plays it with him. Foo Fighters only exist as a band because Dave, as talented as he is, can't play every instrument at the same time on tour. The original members where really no more than Dave's backing musicians.
@IMASTERHD He is a good drummer, and he has written at least one good song that i know of: this one. Even though this performance does seem really stilted ;-P
Anyone else miss Krist's bass playing here? I mean, the Foo Fighter's bass player seems content simply playing a four note progression in this video... very boring and passion-less. At least on the Nirvana version there was some groove to the bassline. I'm not saying this is terrible, just a little disappointing since I grew up listening to the Nirvana version...
@PhilySportsMan Yes they did, it was on December 22 2010. For the encore Grohl got in the drums, pat in the guitar and Krist on Bass i believe. I want to find a video about that..
This song gives me goosebumps, considering how well it's put together, the simplicity, and sheer epicness just ties together to make such a beautiful song :)
@giga0524 But the Nirvana fans in the crowd would've bought the with the lights out box set or would've been introduced to the song by then. I knew I had and was surprised to hear it.
you cant fight over witch version you like better , their both for inspirational tones in the lyrics of the song , dont fight , just wish kurt was still here
I actually never thought the Foos would cover a Nirvana song. And even though it's completely written by Dave, this is totally a Nirvana song. That kinda makes me happy :)
I guess...I love both versions. In reality I dont like Foo Fighters very much. Nirvana is really my favorite band. MrStalyn, you are right, but there is a misunderstanding. Its just that I consider this to be a cover even though Dave did write this song since technically the original was a NIRVANA song and this is classified as a FOO FIGHTERS song. But no big difference bro!
Nirvana's is better. But my favourite is the one released on the Pocketwatch album. Marigold's all about simplicity and there is too much going on here in my opinion.
It's like when Paul McCartney performs any Beatles songs that he wrote, I don't consider those covers (and I don't really know anyone that does), and this is just the same.
@student251192 The original was not a Nirvana song. It was released on Dave's Pocketwatch album. So if you consider the Foo's version a cover, then you must also consider the Nirvana version a cover.
