  • I know that it was taken off of Broadway, but wheres Seussical????? Seussical is one of the best shows to ever hit Broadway even though it's a childrens show.

  • sorry, but phantom of the opera is second place. les mis did deserve first place! it is me favourite musicals

  • lea salonga in 10:30

  • well yer les mis is great but wicked is better sorry

  • what what WHAT WICKED SHOULD BE FIRST screw les mis

  • i want to see les miz so badly

  • Bernadette Peters did children will listen much better in my opinion

  • totally agree with top five completely!!!! but really no clip of tonight for west side story?

  • Cats and Beauty and the Beast fucking suck. Where is Jesus Christ Superstar????

  • you are so right! les mis the best!

  • Agreed on choices but in my book, phantom and les Mis fight for number one

  • Phantom isn't the best musical for the same reason that Cats isn't the 2nd best musical. It doesn't matter how long it ran for, really. None of Sondheim's shows (that he wrote both music and lyrics for) had a run of over 1000 performances on Broadway, but their quality speaks for itself. I won't say anything about the Phantom's character, but the operas in Phantom are shameless spoofs, pointing out broad stereotypes about opera. It's like shooting fish in a barrel. I don't buy the "comic relief"

  • Very good list! I especially love that u put into the woods ahead of phantom. wise choice!

  • Nope, Phantom is Number One. I have Broadway to back me up. Phantom is their longest running show in history and has made the most money worldwide.

I <3 Les Mis and Wicked though.

  • Most of the best musicals end in sadness which is why they have the most impact on people.

  • no Hairspray?!?!

  • aida!!!

  • Wicked is the bomb.com. Needs to be number 1!

  • In my humble opinion (having seen over 150 shows on Broadway alone & over 100 shows off-Broadway, Regional Theatres, National Tours, and college productions) the best musicals of all time based on impact on culture, impact on theatre, and impact on me: #1 Les Miserables #2 West Side Story #3 Rent #4 A Chorus Line #5 Hair #6 Phantom of the Opera #7 La Cage Aux Folles #8 Gypsy #9 The Sound of Music #10 The Lion King #11 The Fantasticks #12 Cabaret #13 Company #14 Avenue Q #15 Spring Awakening

  • I agree w/ all of this but I still think lion king should have a ranking in this part. (opinion) I think it's better than in to the woods.

  • IT SHOULD BE NUMBER1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • REALLY?! PHANTOM IS NUMBER 4!!! COME ON!!!!!!!!

  • Whose the woman at 03:35?

  • @SlashBeetlejuice Vanessa Williams

  • @nytheatrecritic is that the one from ugly betty?

  • No, wicked is not the best, whoever you are. Les Misérables is superior in every concievable way. And Phantom should be number 2. Also, the wicked montage was a little lengthy, "Bring Him Home" should have been used during the Les Mis montage

  • wicked should be first...

  • I was going to be upset when you put Phantom below Wicked but then I saw that Les Mis was #1 then my upset feelings went away. :D

Still think Phantom should be #2 at least...

  • I think I would agree with the list when it came to; Chicago, Cabaret, West Side Story and maybe Les Miserables. The others have some memorable tunes & tech, but not the whole package to make it GREAT. What happened to all the greats during the Golden Age? Such as; Gypsy, A Chorus Line, Most all R&H and Sondheim shows + Kiss Me Kate, My Fair Lady, etc. List was all 1980+ & revivals of above. Show Boat & Oklahoma changed musical theatre 4ever (giving story, music, character development, dance).

  • I LOVE INTO THE WOOODS!!!!!

  • I just went to London last week and saw the 25th Anniversary of The Phantom of the Opera and it was AMAZING!!! Ramin Karimloo and Sierra Boggess were flawless! I love Phantom, and I love Les Mis!!!!

  • @stephh1991 So incredibly jealous i saw it in the movie theatre and it was spectacular so i can only imagine how amazing it was in person

  • my favorites are chorus line, phantom of the opera, and les miserables

  • Honestly, i think Phantom should be #1 not #4. That's just my opinion though. If I had the money, I would go live in New York just to see Phantom every day!

  • @lilsisasu Though, I do think Les Mis comes in a very, very close second!

  • Gerard Butler is the best Phantom EVAH!!

  • i totally agree! les miz is amazing and wicked is a close second!

  • Why is Phantom #4 above Chicago, Cabaret, and West Side Story? I'm not complaining, I'm just a bit confused as to its positioning.

  • wheres rent? wheres blood brothers? wheres war of the worlds?

  • love V williams but Bernadette is WAY better in the role of the witch!!!!

  • having seen wicked and les miserables both i have to say les miserables is my personal favorite :)

  • Ummm, sorry, Wicked is the best. Just sayin.

  • @narniafreak92 Wicked is indeed and one of the the reasons it is so high is not just because of the amazing music but also the ability to give more people the chance to appreciate theatre. Les Mis has such an incurable score and book that in my mind it is hard to beat.

  • @narniafreak92 agree !!!!!!!

  • @narniafreak92 Wicked is a great musical, I love it to death, but Les Miserables is a legendary musical with an amazing score and story. It definitely deserves the #1 spot. =]

  • @narniafreak92 OMG I LOVE YOU FOR SAYIN THAT I SO AGREE

  • @narniafreak92 No Les Miz is the best, just stating. ;)

  • ur list is awsome i may dissagree with wicked maybe it shoulnt deserve b number 2 but everything else is good

    congrats

  • Where are obvious choices such as Gypsy, My Fair KLady, Sweeny Todd, A Little Night Music, Carousel, The King and I, The Music Man, Guys and Dolls, Hello Dolly (and maybe Mame as well), Fiddler on the Roof , Kiss Me Kate, Annie Get Your Gun. All of these deserve consideration for anyone's best 25 musicals of all times.

  • @Snowydog123 seems i overlooked a few lol i may have to make a revised list Sweeney, night Music and Gypsy all deserve a higher nod.

  • @Snowydog123 Agree 100%. Seems that the author of the post has only been exposed to post 1980 musicals plus some revivals. Misses so much, many on your list, +++. R+H changed how theatre was viewed, with Oklahoma, (as well as Show Boat by "H" and Kern) by bringing in character development, dance, music, story. Missing smaller shows, but still great, Call Me Madame, Fantasticks. Anything Sondheim has done, which even in panned when opened, is now classic, like Follies, is psyche-slam of WOW!

  • @sarmadasco this is a very biased list and yes i do lack a great deal of knowledge of pre 80's musical theatre but i am beginning to study it more.however i must admit I am a HUGE Sondheim fan and I constantly have many of his songs stuck in my head and i admit i did a huge injustice for not including Company and Merrily on this list.

  • @nytheatrecritic I had an aunt, ala 'Auntie Mame', who started me when I was 6. It was the 'Fantasticks' in 70's, gr8 4 a 1st show. Small and intimate. Then 'Fiddler on the Roof' at Winter Garden. HUGE! So impressive. Got hooked. Saw everything with my 'Auntie Mame' from 'Dreamgirls' to 'Oklahoma' to 'A Little Night Music', 'Sweeney Todd', all Sondheim, all the time + all classics. See films if u must as next best thing (except Sweeney, not good on film). Musical Theatre's a gr8 world 2 live in

  • i love everything about this vid ecept 4 1 thing. it's just a little thing that makes no change whatsoever to the quality and epic-ness of this vid, but i personally like the TAC for les mis better than the 25th. just my opinion, and great vids!

  • @MegaSunnybob both casts have their strong points. the reason i chose the 25th anniversary cast beacuse it was the easiest to convert for the video :D and ty for calling my video epic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • omgosh...Les mis i will have to agree...lol its number one on my list. i've seen videos from all different shows and the one in this video comes on PBS and i watch it ever chance i get and i got iton DVD

  • Oh my god Lea salonga divaa!

  • Les Miz is the best. :) Wicked is a close second though.

  • @sologratia1 I agree 100%

  • My top ten would be: 10) (tied) Salad Days 10) (tied) The Wiz 9) Beauty & The Beast 8) Legally Blonde 7) The Lion King 6) (tied) Sister Act 6) (tied) Avenue Q 5) Chicago 4) Billy Elliot 3) (tied) Jekyll & Hyde 3) (tied) Little Shop of Horrors 2) Wicked 1) Les Miserables However, I can only talk from a West End perspective as I have never seen a show on Broadway. You have awesome taste in musicals, by the way! :)
  • @WithoutAnAnchor ty very much for watching :) first thing i have to say is your voice is amazing and i am so incredibly jealous of it lol. i completely forgot about Jekyll and Hyde i LOVE the musical and want to see it on stage in the worst way. i love the west end( i saw a bunch of shows when i traveled to London in the spring) i love both NY and London style shows but the audiences are so different. NY audiences are so hard to please. it can be abit ridiculous.

  • @nytheatrecritic Thank you so much. ^_^ Yeah, I tried getting the DVD of J&H but it wouldn't play on an English DVD player but, fortunately, I managed to catch the 2nd UK Tour of the show earlier on this year and it was absolutely fantastic! Yeah, the West End is the best part of London in my opinion, with all those theatres in such close proximity to each other. Are they really? See, I love London audiences because I feel that they really support the actors on stage. :)

  • my top 3 favorites:

    1) The Phantom of the Opera

    2) The Lion King

    3) Wicked

  • @34RiverStone

Thanks for the comment!!!!!!!!!!! the Phantom and Lion King are great shows but i just dont think they are top three material.

  • @nytheatrecritic ur welcome for the comment and i just would like to let u know i enjoyed ur vid and i think u have great taste in musicals! :D
