Rene, nice tie in of a modern day cognitive mystery to ancient Mesopotamian folklore and story telling. Really, I never dreamed of such a distant connection. Nice job. Some say the fact that nde's are so similar is proof of an afterlife. I couldn't disagree more. In fact, for me the similarities are indicators of the opposite. The wiring of the human brain is essentially the same in all people so it makes sense they all have similar experiences.
2. I think that as the brain dies, the last electrical signals are firing and misfiring at an uneven rate and intensity. I think those last "sparks" are what cause life to flash so rapidly before your eyes. Odd memories, in no discernible order, no rhyme or reason, just flashing in your brain uncontrollably. Sounds like misfiring of some sort to me. Let's talk about the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel. It's important to note that no NDE person ever reaches it. Ever notice that?
3. Thats because those who do reach the light are DEAD!!!! The only ones who can tell us about this light are the ones who never reached it. Because they never DIED!! That's why it's called NEAR death. If they had died, I believe they would have had the usual: Life flashes before eyes, tunnel vision with light at the end, feeling of peace, except they made it all the way down the tunnel and therefore cant tell us about it. "The light" is death itself and no distant glimpse can explain it.
4. To know about "the light" you must experience it. But to experience it means entering it..... And of course entering the light means death......which also means your experience can never be shared or even remembered after the fact to reflect on the experience. It's like going to sleep and having a vivid dream but never waking up to be able to share it with someone. In a dream we have the illusion of being in another world. When we wake up, we "come back" but did we ever really GO anywhere?
