Love it! Of course I have heard the ELO version a million times, I really enjoyed hearing this! Guitar is a whole lot better in this version - probably before the days of excess compression.
@MrCarlitostheone You do know that Jeff Lynne wrote this as part of The Move and revived it in ELO don't you?
It is not a case of a cover version, but rather an early example of an artist covering his own materiel. The great Roy Orbison did that once,; he re- recorded his early recordings and hit on a ne label, but they weren’t the same.
His originals are still the best.
With Do Ya, I love all the different versions equally!
This is one of those rare cases where a cover becomes more popular than the original, but you can still go back the first one and say, "holy shit, that's a good song".
The one thing ELO's remake has over this version is the addition of the line "I heard the po-leece playin' with their guns" to the second verse. Otherwise, this one wins by a mile.
This takes me back to 1981. Where,as a fifteen year old kid, I was trying so hard to obtain Move recordings. Back in those times you had to order albums from specialist record shops who would then try to find you a copy. Anyway, the shop in question, was called The Sound Of Music in Rotherham, and they found me the Message From The Country vinyl album. Sadly the shop is now long gone. The music industry is long gone too. Oh for a repeat of the 66-73 period. It was magical.
@dvfmliv I second the motion! Jeff Lynne brought this chaotic, good time sound along to ELO....too bad he started turning into a smooth, homogenized pop band in the late 70's. The only Move song that was played on Western New York radio in the early 70's was "Do Ya", and I also liked the original better than the later ELO remake.
Wow! You guys who think the ELO version is better than The Move's...how do you hear anything at all with your head that far up your ass? "More rockin'"? Please!! This is one of the greatest records of all time. I don't have this remaster, so I hadn't heard this alternate take. The originally released version is the best, but it's very interesting to hear the subtle differences in this one.
This is NOT the definitive version that put first this song on the map! Please post the 7" single by the Move, 1972, United Artists 50928. That is the KILLER version with the cool ending. Thanks - DAVEDJ
Nah. I think Jeff Lynne got it right the second time around with ELO's A New World Record version. This version seems to kind of drag along. ELO's 1976 version, IMO, gave it cohesion. Plus I like Jeff Lynne's lead vocals better than I like Roy Wood's.
Thanks for this, mine's all scratched out and It's interesting to hear it through headphones instead of my crappy hi-fi. Sounds weird without the surface noise. Bit like listening to Stay With Me by the faces on a CD, it's better off of a fucked up 7"!
Double track B side! Smart royalties. Roy Wood was the genius. Mr. Lynne, was really a bit of a twat. He should have been a banker or a solicitor or something.
For me this is the best version of the song. I knew this well before ELO re-did it so that may be the reason but I like the rawness of this. Personally I think Jeff over produced the ELO version.
the Move, ELO...these tidbits which remind me of them remind me of a great great friend..DanKerr, and his amazing wife, and the all but incredible job they do loving and raising their kids in very challenging circumstances... all hail those parents facing the disaffection of the era, and the strains of autism
@BonelessSausage If Jeff had continued along these lines, he would have never had been on the punks "Hit List" but probably be considered a founding father!
This is vital, fun, and alive, and terribly underrated!
This isn't too bad. Lynne was coming on strong on that mike before the chorus, but E.L.O. certainly made him realize what was missing. "Do Ya" does get a bit overplayed, but this is still a refreshing version to listen to. Anybody who claims they love E.L.O. should take a peek at this song.
@shogunblade esta cancion atribuida a jeff lynne es orinalmente escrita por roy wood y al separarse roy de la banda jeff se queda con los creditos.como sea las dos versiones son realmente fantasticas.
More cowbell for sure, but Bev is awesome in this version!

@BigStar303 A very 'interesting' argument.
Of course, you are high on Sneaky Pete Wine & Angel Dust. Were you ever on that
show, on the History Channel, about "Evil Murders"?
you might be a #12!
Now, go back your coffin, the 'power of christ' compels you.

"Scappy" good word for it.
I never thought the ELO fluffy version was as good.
No Roy Wood on the ELO one either, right?
I got "Split Ends" around 73 and had to buy it twice.
