Car today are overall very safe, but many of the older cars were death traps (especially the foreign ones). The manufactures knew what worked, but were striving to make light weight cheap cars to meet consumers needs. If I'm going to drive an old car, it will be something like a gas guzzling Oldsmobile. They are a tank, but can take a crash.

Regarding the Holden Commodore, it was driven at 100 km/h and loaded with 300 kg in the boot. Not to be mixed with the other tests with unloaded cars at 64 km/h.

The VW pickup is also loaded at rear, with approx. 1000 kg, hence the damage.

if you think about the age of that VW Beetle it's not a bad crash test at all. If you compare this test to other 60-70's cars this is actully a good rated car. Only beaten by Volvo, Merce and BMW.
