I agree with Lee that facts should be correct. I also support healthy debate. I do however sympathise with Annie's intentions and would like to see a debate.
More importantly however, is Lee implying that he disagrees with Annie's assertion that Capitalism isn't sustainable - suggesting that he thinks it is.

But if Annie claims that our current rate of consumption cannot continue without disaster, and Lee asserts the opposite, then someone has to be correct. There might be some middle ground on some of the statistics that they claim, but facts are facts. Scientists don't discuss things and all decide to find a middle ground so that they can feel good. No, they work together to find the truth.

I watched the story of bottled water and their doesn't seem to be much objectionable material in it. I personally like to drink filtered tap water and believe that bottled water is terribly over priced, even more expensive than soda and ofter more than juice and much of it is simply filtered tap water. ughhhhh my religion teacher made my classmates watch the story of stuff, so i sent them the critique of the story of stuff. all the people i sent it to watched it. Boy was my teacher surprised when my friends started saying the information in the video was proved false, and gave the true facts. The other day the same teacher made us watch a video from the young turks. the video basically just degraded Sarah Palin and her family.

Great Buckley quote. Her arrogance is reminiscent of our current President. He recently was quoted as saying they're the ones who deal in facts, logic, etc.
It seems the default position of the left is to demean it's opponents. Why was her response about being "civil" and dealing only with "facts"? Her sycophants got a nice chuckle out of that, which is part of the problem with the left. Please let us know when/if this ever happens.

But if Annie claims that our current rate of consumption cannot continue without disaster, and Lee asserts the opposite, then someone has to be correct. There might be some middle ground on some of the statistics that they claim, but facts are facts. Scientists don't discuss things and all decide to find a middle ground so that they can feel good. No, they work together to find the truth.

I appreciate your polite demeanor and lack of name-calling and sensationalism that so many politicians resort to today.
You come across as disclaiming the entire video. I agree there are parts of it that aren't accurate, and I don't appreciate that Leonard used some fear-instilling tactics in her delivery, but I am sobered by many of the statistics and habits that she brought up. I watched the story of bottled water and their doesn't seem to be much objectionable material in it. I personally like to drink filtered tap water and believe that bottled water is terribly over priced, even more expensive than soda and ofter more than juice and much of it is simply filtered tap water. It's really sad and pathetic.

Anyway, that was snotty of her to say (in response to a calm, kindly and thoughtful offer to debate in a university) "I have a couple of criteria about my debates. I like my debates to be civil and respectful, and I like them to be fact-based." The implication being that she is all of those things, but her opponents tend not to be (thus the very first thing she has to say in response to the offer, is that warning).

I can't wait for you to debunk the bottled water video. I just watched it and it drove me nuts. The water in my town tastes horrible, and while I get that SOME places do have good tasting tap water, many places don't. The companies didn't "manufacture" a demand for drinking water, they realized the demand already existed. I look forward to seeing you point out other fallacies in the video.

ughhhhh my religion teacher made my classmates watch the story of stuff, so i sent them the critique of the story of stuff. all the people i sent it to watched it. Boy was my teacher surprised when my friends started saying the information in the video was proved false, and gave the true facts. The other day the same teacher made us watch a video from the young turks. the video basically just degraded Sarah Palin and her family.

Liberals reject the premise of subjective value from Karl Menger. It doesn't matter that humans want goods and that trash can be stored for 1,000s of years in the future safety, it looks ugly and it's not "natural" so therefore it is evil (same with factories in third world countries). You guys should debate at the University of Colorado at Boulder. While Boulder generally seems to lean left, if you take a look around, you'll find that its people fully embrace consumerism. Sounds like an even playing field to me. So long as both of you refrain from pigeon-holing the others arguments and really open your ears, this could actually be a productive discourse.
