  • Gary Cleverley, the big guy driving down at the end of the track in the suspenders, passed away on December 10, 2011. Gary C. brought hi-end HO Slot racing to San Diego County when he opened HO Racing and Hobbies and brought in this Custom "Riverside" Bucktrax in 1994. He was a fun and friendly guy who was always laughing and joking. He helped a whole lot of us get started in (or back into) slot racing. He loved fine cars and anything that was fast. He will be missed. - R.I.P. Gary C

  • This is no fun. You can't follow the cars. And the cars are more like crazy bugs.

  • This was recorded in May 14 1994. You can see the date and time in the lower right-hand corner.

  • They look like little bugs flying around. lol

  • Animal is that you?

Now that I read through all the posts, 1.385<<<SWEET, and is that the man with two first names?

    lol

    Gary C

  • Hi,

Haven't looked in for some time. Went a little nuts here, lol. Some poor soul commented that I was a real nice guy, I appreciate that very much, I miss my friends at the old shop. Not customers but friends. I really wish I could come play again but me leg is pretty bad., Anyways, Gary you guys still racing? Sub 1.4 at Riverside?

    Gary C

  • Mr C.

Rumor has it that you're back in So Cal. Is that true? If you are come see your friends. We miss you bro! We're racing tonight in Scripps Ranch. Me, Francis, Gene, Ty, Z-Racer, even Tim, Joy, Jaime, and Cheatin' Anthony have been known to show. Or....we're also racing in April on the Riverside in Ontario. Cukras, Haywire, Mike Low, and a host of other LA dudes will be there. I'll hook you up with a NEO car that will WIN. hit me up at: hoparts@cox.net - Morgan

  • Hi There ! Congratulations !!!! A very nice lay out ! I am old school too and i will love to try these cars,,,, look real fun too. Where can i get the software for timing? Tks and see you!

  • O_O 1st time I see fast model cars like this

  • try this

  • I see Gary, and Mark S, Dan Rodick, John Cucrus, Doug Sheppard, and others. This was one of the best tracks around, I even won a race on it Polynea class. Still have the cars, but no good controller, and most of all, Gary to set up the cars.

  • WoW...really? Okay so it might be cool to go this fast. But this is not racing. This is try to stay on the track to longest to win. When you need a computer to track your car because you can't, that's retarded. The amount of money you spent on these makes you losers that should grow up and quit pretending like it's 1975. NASCAR at 55? NASCAR doesn't go around non oval road tracks like you set up at 200 mph. As long as you guys are having fun, you shouldn't worry what I or anybody else t

  • I'm sorry, but I'm old school T-Jets, and this is just stupidly ridiculous.

  • You know what's funny, this is from the mid 90's, the cars now are even faster, better tires, lighter bodies and flat out more powerful everything! You want to see really fast cars check out the 1/24 scale Group 7 or Open cars! Much larger cars that don't use magnets but use side wings that create a lot of down force by folding off to the sides of the car on the track. I think they're videos on here! I raced open cars in the 90's, to be competitive you were spenind $300-$500 to build a car!

  • if u blink u can miss a lap

  • I guess you're right. You don't know a lot about slot racing. But that's okay. If you check it out a bit more, you'll find that racing at the NEO level is far more intense and difficult (driving, building, and setting up a car for racing) than running the slow stuff. The NEO cars are hard to see when you're watching them, but not when you're driving one. We've all done plenty of the slow stuff, but this is where the Big Dogs play, and it ain't easy to win here!

  • I dont know a lot about slot cars but evidently these have magnets, this makes it almost unfun because the chance of wrecking is cut in half and your car is going so fast u cant even hardly see it none the less actually get to look at the graphics while its moving, one of the coolest parts of it.

  • Driving these cars is a mental thing! your concentration has to be 100%, tone out the other cars and don't miss your braking points before each turn, which is done by blipping the controller so the car plants into the corner so the magnets get a better bite on the track, miss your blip a 1/4" early or late and you have a guided missile. You need to get a rhythm going. If you held down the trigger at the start, you would be removing your impaled car from the drywall right past the first turn!

  • Great video - I prefer T-jets but I do enjoy ripping some laps with a wizard, slot tech or other modified car. They are very finicky and take some effort to get dialed in. Then you as a driver really have to get in a rhythm or you will struggle. The commenters on magnets making it easy can't see all the trigger action going on. One mistake and those cars will fly.

  • Seth would like to see Jeff Gordon do that...

  • Y'all need some retrictor plates! Make it realistic!

  • ok. all you saying it is to fast: the video is sped up. 2. mabey they like it like that.

  • The video is not sped up, trust me, I used to race there and the cars really went that fast. I actually drove those cars and they weren't really to hard to drive due to the fact that magnets really 'stuck' them to the track. The hard part was keeping track of which car was yours. I really didn't care for that type of racing, I much preferred the 'normal' speed cars as they took a lot more to drive them. The guy in the suspenders at the far end is Gary Cleverley, the track owner.

  • I used to think these videos were sped up to until you see it in person these are the BSRT cars and the Wizard cars. They cost from $80 - $300 per car and are completely modified. They really move that FAST. I know... it's SICK!!

  • ok.i could see them being that fast.

  • too fast....on scale they would be hitting 700mph....wheres the fun in that? not realistic at all

  • Since when is racing a slot car realistic?

  • @jeevanirajiv Since when is Racing realistic? "so you like Nacar at 55mph?" :)

  • @jeevanirajiv Agreed, way too fast...

  • doesnt really look that fun, i prefere the usual slot car racing where you can actualy see your car go round the track.

  • Eyebrows has a point, doesnt that get boring? and the poor old guy in the blue jumper looks very confused on which ones his car.

  • @sprayframe That's what everyone says. After you run the slow stuff for a while, then get your hands on these little beasts you don't go back to the slow stuff unless your 4 year old wants to play "Race Cars"!!!! ;-)

  • I'm an old fart who remembers the Aurora cars of the 60's & 70's. I gotta ask: are these running as fast as they are without magnets helping to hold them down? I can't believe the physics would allow them to stay on the track at these speeds without some help. If so; its pretty amazing.

  • You're right! These are magnet cars Rare earth (NEO) magnet cars actually. But you still have to drive them, cause the motors are so powerful.

  • @CrustyCurmudgeon I voted up when i saw old fart

  • how much did it cost to build one of those cars

  • From $150 to $250 depending upon the brand and parts.

  • In the info it says: "cars being raced are Tyco and Tomy NEO cars (now obsolete because they're too slow!)"

Excuse me, but I dont find this slow. The other question is, why so fast? can they run at real scale speed?

  • Why so fast? Cause we have the "Need for Speed"! If you want to race at scale speed with scale cars there are T-jets and Fly cars, etc. But, if you want to race at the cutting edge of high-tech tiny electric vehicles, then you race NEO cars.

And yes, these ones in this video are slow (1.8 secs/lap 1994) compare with todays cars (1.5 secs/lap 2009).

  • how u get them to go so fast

  • Seems like a very unsatisfying hobby, they're just to fast, it looks as though you can't even see who's in the lead with out the computer. They're set up so magnets hold them to the track. I'll go with the larger, closer scale speed cars.

  • Obviously, we're not interested in scale speed. This is about maximum speed and it's A LOT more challenging than you might think. The cars don't just stay on, you have to build them the right way and then drive them

  • To each their own. I've raced everything from these, to 1/24 flexi cars, 1/24 opens and Scalextric. The European Sclaextric/Ninco/Fly cars are the most unsatisfying to me, but I don't tell that to those who are into them... They lack the speed of faster cars I've raced and the fun of flexis and womps. But hey, everyone has a crusade I guess.

  • LOOKS like a swarm of bees. Ill take 1/24 scale Carrera any day.

  • sounds like a swarm of bees!

  • Oh, Gary is the guy at the far end of the driver's panel with the long hair and the suspenders.....heehee....

  • I was a regular at this track which was located near Vista, Ca. and I was a witness to the Guiness World Record run there. The cars shown there were truly insane to drive. They were also very finicky to set up. It took just the right combination of motor, magnets, and chassis setup to get them to run that fast. I was more into the "stock" classes that ran there on a weekly basis. Lots of good memories, and Gary Cleverley (the owner) was a super nice guy!!!.....

  • how do they go so fast

  • this makes my wizard storm look like a piece of junk now...

  • its not normal how fast crazy man

  • how fast was the cars going

  • They are goint about 2 seconds per lap on a 61 ft. per lap. That's about 20 miles per hour actual speed, or 1,280 miles per hour scale speed. Straight speed is about 30 miles per hour. This track is where the Guinnes Book of World Records has an H.O. slot car traveling over 360 miles in 24 hours.

  • are they not sloing down around the turns

  • probly not they just have crazy good magnets to hold them on the track.

  • ya they are there blipping which means letting of throttle for just a fraction of a second

  • I went like 1.87 on this KILLER track with a Doug Sheperd prepped rocket neo somet time round then :) Loved it. Too fast for a 57 y/o now, get on wit da T jets

  • like the guy standing up all you can see is his head going back and forward (guy in blue shirt!) but bloody hell that looks cool i so want to have a go!!!

  • Awsome. Didn't see many neo's run there. Is any of the old gang (H.O. Racing & Hobbies, Kensington Raceway or The Big Shop) gitting the itch to race again?

    Tim & Joy

  • dude they go so fast like super sonic speed

  • ups.

    to run.

    sorry friend.

  • Hi Morgan, you like run in ours track?

these guest to do it, the day that you want yo run, ok.

    Deiv..®

a must for the serious racer..®

  • Awesome, very fast cars..... wow!!

    neomagnets? bsrt spinner?

    deiv..®

  • to race sorry

  • hay im starting to realy get into slot cars is there eny whare around inland empire just send me a message thanks

    kyle

  • Actuall this track is located in Rancho Cucamonga. There are big SCHOR races at that location in April and October. Send me an email address and I'll hook you up with a contact.

  • that is way too fast

  • GMAN, WAZZZZZZZZZZZZZZUPPPPPPPP...

    I am in Indy still.

Playing XBOX ALOT. Like all day.

Glad to see you broke the 1.4 mark. I think I had a 1.43X 14 years ago.

When you get older you are supposed to get SLOWER.... LOL

WOW, you got B Lowes track, very cool.

If you see any of the oldtimers I used to race with Please please please give them my best. Gary

  • I'll tell em. There's a few SD guys left (Gene, Francis, GPaul, Anthony, and Ty) and quite a few of LA guys still going at it. (Cukras, J Williams, Ben, Waka, Oscar, and others) SCHOR's kinda makin' a comeback. I think the recession is good for little tiny car racin'. Good to hear from ya - Morgan

  • Yep, it's me (G Morgan)! Took me 14 years to figure out how to digitize it - HA! You're right too! It's still the best and fastest track out there. The fastest lap on it so far is 1.385 secs. It's up in Rancho Cucamonga now. I also got B. Lowe's original

6x18 Scorpion from him. It's also in Cucamonga. Both of em' lookin' good and runnin' fast.

  • Just curious, who posted this Video? Gary is that you? Only took 14.5 years LMAO
