My father-in-law recently passed away and I have learned that he and his mother had traveled "though the fields" at night during WWII. His father was captured (Nazi's) and they ended up at a hospital... I located a document that says Rigas Pilsetas Dzimtsarakstu Nodala, Rakstiska zina..... So, I'm assuming this was from the City of Riga. It is dated Sept. 27, 1944.....would love to find out more info.
When you're 26, you're stupid. I've lived and worked in Europe. Don't talk! By the way, what do you mean about Israel: "it's all ours'? Is it based on yet another horrible religion? Why should you make that claim and not someone else?
Riga is beautiful again, since the Russians left. True, wherever they were in the 40 years after WWll, they ruined the cites and countrysides of Europe, where currently people are hard at work to demolish soviet reminders of the occupation. The Russians showed no sense or sensibility towards the greatness of Western European culture, including architecture. Many Russians never left their occupied lands, because it's better there than in their own horrible Russia. Congratulations, Latvia!
@kapkob2 Who are you asking that question? But on that note, why has it been covered up until recently that Vladimir Lenin was partially Jewish, along with Karl Marx, Leon Trotsky and many others. Why hasn't Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's latest book in which he discusses the brutality of Jewish communist leaders translated into englsih. They brought that brutality to the Baltic countries and deported hundreds of thousands to Siberia and many to their deaths.
It's sad that now Riga has more russians than latvians living in it! I hope some day Russia will pay greatly for it's crimes against Latvia and other Eastern-Europe countries!
The first president of Latvia held a university degree from a university in the United States in Nebraska. His name was Karlis Ulmanis, and he became a relevantly benevolent dictator in 1934, when he dismissed Parliament. Ulmanis ruled until the Soviet re-Incorporation in 1940.
In 1721 it reverted to Russia, which governed the country till 1918. Independent from 1918-40, it was annexed by the Soviet Union in 1940 (together with the other Baltic Republics). From 1941-44 it was under German rule and was re-Incorporated into the Soviet Union at the end of WWII.

The country has had a turbulent history. Before 1918 Latvia has been known by various other names. One widely used name was Livonia, which covered the northern part of the country. The other name was widely used, such as Courland. In the Middle Ages the area was colonized by the Livonian Teutonic Knights.

Oh yes, of course, the allies started the WWII and led Europe to destruction. Ha,ha, ha! Stop this bullshit! Don't forget, who had started the war! Nazi GERMANY, not the allies, started it.
Well yes but the Soviets didn't have any style, for example, the city of Narva, was a growing city with only estonians, it had a beautiful big old town, then was the battle of Narva, people left but the walls of houses were still standing, it could've been built up but no, the soviets built typical block houses and demolished the old town, only remaining house was the town hall. Nazi Germany didn't rule in Baltics after WW2, they lost, Soviet Union however did rule here and they did nothing to save hundreds of years of history and traditions.
Do you really think there as money around after WW2 to rebuild old towns in Europe...? Even the UK build concrete blocks as a quick solutions to war damaged regions.
Most Estonian do not know about Narva - this city used to be as beautiful as Riga and Tallinn with an unique Swedish old town. Narva was destroyed in 1944 completely, only 2 unique buildings survived the carpet-bombardment - Estonian Dresden.

Most Estonian do not know about Narva - this city used to be as beautiful as Riga and Tallinn with an unique Swedish old town. Narva was destroyed in 1944 completely, only 2 unique buildings survived the carpet-bombardment - Estonian Dresden.
