this is the way I see it. When Tabata says rest, I think they meant rest so that your lungs could get more oxigen in to your body and your heart beat slows down. Holding a squat will make your legs hurt like hell but it wont speed up your heart or make you out of breath. You can def replenish your oxigen supply while holding a squat and therefore is indeed a rest in the way intended.
@A550RGY thank you about informing me about the existance of female vs. male leg muscles. She is fit enough to haul her own body weight. You saw plenty of other skinny women and men there that could not keep up. Great excuse for your sucky fitness wuss
@mohinigirl Yeah big surprise that the others can't keep up, when they're beginners and she's front and center as the example to follow. Put her in a pushup contest with the males and let's test this fitness of hers.
@A550RG Ya she is more advance that is why she is at the center of the circle for incentive. She is more advance=more fit. You are making asumptions--you know what is said about that--that because she is a woman she is weak. It is an irational conclusion. Considering she is more fit than the other people there--specially in a crossfit group--it is more than likely that she has also developed upper body strength. Sex in this situation is irelevant, the only relevant fact here is training.
@mohinigirl I agree that she is very fit, there is no doubt about that, but what she's doing here is her "specialty", of sorts, because of her short height, light weight, and much of that weight being leg muscle (a female trait). So, this is like watching a male with no legs do tons of chin-ups... it's much easier under those circumstances. Show me a woman that's over 5' doing what she did and I'll be much more impressed.
@A550RGY It is all about training. There are plenty of small people that cannot do one push up because their muscles are not properly trained. Again I repeat it is all about training. Women usually have more lower body strength true but this is very easily evened out with the diet and training. A male that has no legs is not as fit as he thinks he is because the legs are the biggest muscles in the body nothing to brag about even if he is a gorilla on top.
@A550RGY Sigh, I have seen men and women bigger than her do this. IT IS ALL ABOUT CONDITIONING. Im a woman but I have worked to develop my upper body to match my lower body. I lift on par with most of the guys in my gym and even more than some and Im not anywhere near done yet. Balanced upper+lower body strength+strong cardiovascular system+good flexibility= fitness. if your body is lagging behind in one of this areas than you are not truly fit be you male or female.
@A550RGY Well I dont stare because its rude but lets say for lat pull down between 90 lbs and 120. As I said Im a beginner so, I think thats pretty good. Im at 90 myself
@mohinigirl 90 lbs is very good for a woman, but 90-120 for a male is rather poor. I would think most beginner to moderate guys would be between 130-180. Just for reference, my best on lat pulldown, palms-in was 270x8, and palms-out was 240x10, I believe. 25 lbs bicep DB curls is very tough for a woman! Wow. I usually get 45x10, but when I started I was around 25lbs like you. I'm impressed.
@A550RGY Well that is what I think they do as I dont like to stare. Thanks, I'm just a beginner and eventhough I was handed somewhat different cards to start with, Im confident in my ability to grow in strength. Im going to reserve judgement about a woman's ability to catch up to a guy in strength until I arrive there myself. I believe that with the right training and diet anything is possible and the mind's power to overcome is a very powerful tool. I believe I can.
@A550RGY Also I do 90 on the rowing machine and use 25 for bicep curls--so 50 total when you add up both arms--and 45 with the bicep machine--the same one for the lats but using a rope instead. Im going to keep training and kick their asses. Working hard on the chest to also bring up to speed. They all stare which gets a little annoying but I try to concentrate on my training, I love lifting.
@mohinigirl I commend you for loving to workout and train upper body. Many women are afraid of both, not wanting to be too manly. But really, it's all about health and general strength. They aren't going to turn into women bodybuilders... as that takes crazy-dedication (plus steroids). The biggest they could get naturally would be like a female gymnast or fitness athlete.
@A550RGY I have never bought into the guys are always going to be stronger so I have never been afraid to lift heavy loads in daily life or the gym. Im solid thick and put on muscle easily. maybe its genetics--my father was a bodybuilder in his youth--or maybe its just that I have never treated myself as the weaker sex and so therefore Im not. There are many female natural bodybuilders who can put on muscle easily. Then again most of those male builders are also on roids so who can really say.
I started watching this and about a minute in, I decided to start it from the beginning and have a go myself while they do it. I'm happy I didn't watch the whole video before I decided to do this. Success is sweet.
The whole point of Tabata is 20/10, meaning 20 on and 10 rest. The whole point is to push 100% during the 20 on, and rest during the 10 off, so that u still end up trying to push 100% during the last minute/last 20s (and not standing about). By holding the squat ur not resting properly, and u ruin the point of the exercise (its no longer a Tabata). Having said that this looks brutal in its own right.
A Lot of elite trainers are moving away from squats in all areas of working out because you are heel loading. In what sport besides Oympic lifting do you ever load the heels? This is now considered poor central nervous system training since you should always train on the balls of the feet. Check out the dynamic integration videos
You are right- this is not textbook tabata. whatever breaks up the workout so that i don't get stale is what i do. I'll do tabata with 5 different movements back to back- the o2 use/intensity/soreness varies with every workout. crossfit is more about pushing through performance boundaries. i used to think crossfit's kip pullups were a joke until i saw how much effort is required to do 100. whatever gets you off the couch, through the plateau, and coming back for more is crossfit philosophy
This is not Tabata. It's not even close to how Tabata is supposed to work. The rest periods in Tabata are just as important as the high intensity work periods. The 10 second rest is for mental and physical recovery so you can keep the intensity of the exercise very high. If you well you can modify a Tabata protocol by eliminating the rest, then you are not pushing hard enough!
While i agree in general, i think this is an exception. Resting during intervals with "bodyweight" squats is way too easy. This is just a way to make it super difficult by using just your bodyweight. If you haven't tried it, you should. It's a LOT harder than it looks. If you can do it without ANY pauses at the top, then kudos to you!
If it is way too easy, then you are not going hard enough in the work phase. The Tabata should be at such a high intensity that you literally cannot keep going. If you can, you need to work harder or you need to find another exercise that will allow you to work harder in the 20 second time frame.
You are so correct. Holding people in a stress position during the rest phase is fine for hazing but does zero for what Tabata was designed, 100% effort intervals with minimal recovery. They will govern down their output to survive.
@amachine75 exactly. tabata protocol was very specific. i would put forward that air squats even with rest can't make for a good tabata interval- let alone tabata-to-bottom squats.
@intheweeds The focus of CrossFit is never adherence to any protocol. It's to provide a constantly varying stimulus of work to rest. Try this. Just follow along in front of the computer and then say it's ineffective. This workout can absolutely annihilate a whole room of athletes in 4 minutes. I've seen it done and participated myself.
@gtrgy888 I am new to te tabata protocol, and i must agree with you. No matter how well conditioned you are, it will slay you if you do it with intensity.
@amachine75 Rest? In CrossFit rest periods are unheard of. They don't do the Tabata protocol, they alter it to make it more impossibly painful than the original. Try this at max effort and then say it isn't hard enough. Regular Tabata squats will seem leisurely.
This is great raw exercise, respect to all those getting fit this way! Two things: Izumi Tabata did research finding that rounds of 20 seconds of intense exercise FOLLOWED by 10 seconds of REST, was awesome way to increase anaerobic and aerobic performance. The squats in the middle are not rest. 2) Many people had knees over toes at the bottom- that, good people, is an official OUCHIE.
my opinion is , more of 1 people was injured because of that workout, for life. among other faulty things, annie is bouncing when she is reaching at the bottom. all the routines are not for everyone. the opposite
Annie has got to be one of the healthiest people I've ever seen in my life. She's got to have a lot of mental focus and stability to be able to do that.
Tabata is a type of workout tempo, I don't see anything wrong with making your body rest in a different way. Your body will adapt and you will ultimately see someone change it up once again to a new form of exercise with a completely different tempo.
Heavy Squats Will Destory U Knees Over Time But If U R Using Your Own Body Weight It Isn't As Taxing N As Long As U Make Sure To Stretch N Keep Ur Joints Loose U Will Add Longevity
uhh what'll happen to ur knees and thighs if u dont stretch? and what'll happen to ur knees and thighs if u do stretch? o_o; ive been thinking to do 150 squats daily..
I just did an 8 interval set of these(really intense, I fell over afterwards and couldn't stand up for almost 30 seconds), but I stretched pretty well afterwards, and ate some good protein so I should recover pretty quickly.
Besides the female in the white jersey who seemed okay. Too many people had poor form and the pain they're feeling is through they're poor form than doing anything. I'm surprised this was considered okay and if I was hurt I think I'd sue. Seriously the crossfit supervisors should be watching over the people because there is about 90% poor form amongst the people.
"Well maybe she is in way better shape, but at least I won't be SIQ with Rhabda."
Rhabdomyolysis is caused by crush injuries, chemical and/or biological factors. Not by squatting. And not by an experienced Crossfitter. In fact, no experienced Crossfitter has ever hand any Rabdo problems.
Poor health is the hallmark of those who don't engage in vigorous exercise, not by those who do.
I have no idea why this comment is thumbed down. It is completely valid. Attention all crossfitters: poor technique does not mean greater all round fitness.
my brother introduced me to squat tibata today. we did it with 20 pounds on the bar (65 total pounds). i was able to do 8 or 9 on every set. the 8th one i went all out and got 10. my head felt like it was about to explode, but dang, sure was a heck of a workout!
I do Tabata every now and then. Today I did it with your vid. Pretty inspiring seeing some dude on screen and hearing a little voice in your head yell 'c'mon you can do better that that guy!'. Thank you! It kicks my ass every time!
coming from a guy with a "Transsexual Devanny in Girls" video under his favorites. lol. looks like someones questioning their sexuality. just laugh it off, it's ok.
More props is given to quantity rather than quality, which is cool, if that is understanding from the beginnig. Keep asking questions and evolving Crossfit!
After multiple attempts (not in the same day) i was finally able to finish it without a any kind of cheat (like resting a second here and there). The killer is right when you start up each work period. But after a couple reps it actually gets easier... until the next work period.
I don't think swinging arms is bad form. It actually makes your heart rate go higher from more motion.
Kudos to those who were able to finish. There is something called "a bit too much" though. When the workout turns to screaming, it might be time to stop.
Trainers need to understand that people are less likely to continue a workout regimen that leaves them in excruciating pain.
define "excruciating." my definition of excruciating might differ from yours. if yours involves an elliptical machine, your opinion is probably worthless here.
Zamar4ever, I kinda see what youre saying a bit. I think alot of trainers confuse, "hurting your client" with "giving your client a good workout." But at the same time, I don't think that the trainers here crossed that line. The body's got to be pushed beyond previous limits in order to progress. Of course, all attention being paid to practicality and safety. But I believe that overall this was a pretty intense and SAFE demonstration.
the wider your stance the easier it is. one dide was bending over when he did them, cheating. the red headed dude andthe old timer were the oly ones who did it right i bet. ha ahha just messing
sorry- annie is in great shape and i'm sure she can kick most people's asses in correctly done tabatas too. BUT her tabata squats in this video are WHACK- swinging her arms, using WAY too much momentum and setting an overall BAD example. why aren't any of the students swinging their arms and using momentum like that? because they were taught not to. i'm surprised.
I doubt that everyone there is starting out... But my point was not to denigrate the other practitioners (even though it may have sounded like that - sorry), but to give cred to Annie. There are highly experienced athletes that can't keep up with her.
CrossFit emphasizes correct form, ROM, and safety before all else, especially by the trainers. That said, removing the stretch reflex by hanging in the bottom position, thrown together with the Tabata interval, gives a DOSE like no other.
If you think it's "bad technique" to practice sitting down and standing up really fast, something's wrong. Half of Asia does it all afternoon. Plus, this is the air squat.
This looks like a real smoker, I may have to try it! And where's the bad form, tjblue2? There's about 10 trainers there to help avoid that and these people are there to get their butts kicked!
Im not from your country mate, my profile says NEW ZEALAND, yours says AMERICA... Re-read your posts and understand that you have posted to me, but in all reality, your talking to no one... work that out, or are you dislexic??? lol
"My bad" - what is that supposed to mean? You Americans should leave the English language alone; its bad enough that you have to bastardise it anyway, but then to create something so pathetically stupid as that phrase really just deserves a huge kick in the nuts.
im only 16 and my tabata squat score is like 8. This exact workout. its hard as hell but it works out so much, you get worked and built if you can eat enough and gain your muscle up you get the good stuff. I do Tabata every Tuesday, Tabata sit up, squats, push ups, pull ups, and jumps. then before than a tabata run and after all that a set of froggies

Try this before talking shit. You won't be able to walk for days.

I just did an 8 interval set of these(really intense, I fell over afterwards and couldn't stand up for almost 30 seconds), but I stretched pretty well afterwards, and ate some good protein so I should recover pretty quickly.

HinduHeratic 2 years ago
Oh the pain!!!! Even I can feel it just by watching this video : )
Tam712 2 years ago
Besides the female in the white jersey who seemed okay. Too many people had poor form and the pain they're feeling is through they're poor form than doing anything. I'm surprised this was considered okay and if I was hurt I think I'd sue. Seriously the crossfit supervisors should be watching over the people because there is about 90% poor form amongst the people.
vaberella 2 years ago
oh man, i wanna puke just watching! i tried this once, and i found myself resting before my rest periods!

Well maybe she is in way better shape, but at least I won't be SIQ with Rhabda.
Randman64 3 years ago
"Well maybe she is in way better shape, but at least I won't be SIQ with Rhabda."
Rhabdomyolysis is caused by crush injuries, chemical and/or biological factors. Not by squatting. And not by an experienced Crossfitter. In fact, no experienced Crossfitter has ever hand any Rabdo problems.
Poor health is the hallmark of those who don't engage in vigorous exercise, not by those who do.
fluxboy3000 3 years ago
The woman in the white jersey with black pants w/ white stripe has poor form, too much bouncing and hot dogging.
Randman64 3 years ago
The woman in the white jersey with black pants w/ white stripe is Annie Sakamoto, and is far more athletic than you will ever be.
ArentWeSpecial 3 years ago
They're shooting for max reps per round, that's why she's going fast. :)
Oranginaaa 3 years ago
When you sacrifice form or ROM for time the comparison becomes meaningless because the workout isn't the same.
ninjanerd8 3 years ago

No, it's not bad for your knees and it's certainly not good to slim your thighs. It will make your thighs more muscular.
ptemcphee 3 years ago
nice informed statement there ptemcphee
yusefsobky 3 years ago
Isnt squatting like that in a jerky motion bad for your knees??
piecemaker3180 3 years ago
To begin with they use no additional weight so I really doubt it, to do to much of a "spring motion" with 200+ kg may be a different story.
JohanKH 3 years ago
is this good to slim your thighs ?
papichulo2256 3 years ago
You can't slim any part of your body selectively. If you want to be more slim you have to lose weight.

More props is given to quantity rather than quality, which is cool, if that is understanding from the beginnig. Keep asking questions and evolving Crossfit!
HillBoy1969 4 years ago
After multiple attempts (not in the same day) i was finally able to finish it without a any kind of cheat (like resting a second here and there). The killer is right when you start up each work period. But after a couple reps it actually gets easier... until the next work period.
I don't think swinging arms is bad form. It actually makes your heart rate go higher from more motion.
johnb412 4 years ago
Yu crossfit guys are nuts, im too fat for this
FUZZYisBIG 4 years ago 3
Nobody is too fat for CrossFit.
ArentWeSpecial 3 years ago
Kudos to those who were able to finish. There is something called "a bit too much" though. When the workout turns to screaming, it might be time to stop.
Trainers need to understand that people are less likely to continue a workout regimen that leaves them in excruciating pain.
zamar4ever 4 years ago
define "excruciating." my definition of excruciating might differ from yours. if yours involves an elliptical machine, your opinion is probably worthless here.
AAAImSoFit 4 years ago
Well played, sir, well played indeed.
ArentWeSpecial 3 years ago
Zamar4ever, I kinda see what youre saying a bit. I think alot of trainers confuse, "hurting your client" with "giving your client a good workout." But at the same time, I don't think that the trainers here crossed that line. The body's got to be pushed beyond previous limits in order to progress. Of course, all attention being paid to practicality and safety. But I believe that overall this was a pretty intense and SAFE demonstration.
CHEETAH69 4 years ago 3
the wider your stance the easier it is. one dide was bending over when he did them, cheating. the red headed dude andthe old timer were the oly ones who did it right i bet. ha ahha just messing

sorry- annie is in great shape and i'm sure she can kick most people's asses in correctly done tabatas too. BUT her tabata squats in this video are WHACK- swinging her arms, using WAY too much momentum and setting an overall BAD example. why aren't any of the students swinging their arms and using momentum like that? because they were taught not to. i'm surprised.
soundfluid 4 years ago
It was great to train along to this. Thank you for uploading.

yes she is cheating and she is not even going past 90 degrees with her legs.

Makes the blokes look like pussies.

She's also an instructor while everyone else is just starting out.
mtimilty 4 years ago
I doubt that everyone there is starting out... But my point was not to denigrate the other practitioners (even though it may have sounded like that - sorry), but to give cred to Annie. There are highly experienced athletes that can't keep up with her.
heqitao 4 years ago
Holy crap! I tried it and it's a killer. I had to rest a couple seconds here and there to relieve the intense burn.
johnb412 4 years ago
tjblue2,
please.

There's about 10 trainers there to help avoid that and these people are there to get their butts kicked!

bjjforme 2 years ago
"My bad" - what is that supposed to mean? You Americans should leave the English language alone; its bad enough that you have to bastardise it anyway, but then to create something so pathetically stupid as that phrase really just deserves a huge kick in the nuts.
