Beautiful and awsome. Just one thing I think he is playing it too much like a classical silver flute. He should throw in some shakuhachi specific sounds and traditional japanese melodies(jazzed up of course). I know he did do it a little but I wanted more you know :D
My friend, an excellent shakuhachi teacher, has had the instrument for over 25 years in Japan. Then he came to Poland and after 6 months the shakuhachi crumbled :(
That does suck. I have a PVC one i'm beginning practice on, so I'm not worried about that. I don't know though if I could keep a bamboo one here. It's in Florida, so it is always humid, but inside the house there is a constant fluctuation between 74 degrees - 77 degrees on the thermostat. I'm not sure what that would do, but 74 feels like freezing on that thermostat and 77 like a sauna. Going from no humidity indoors to 100% outdoors also wouldn't be good.
Hey, Jon is the guy who showed me how to make stir-fry when he was a grad student at Eastman and I was subletting the next apartment over. Good guy, good pie-anna player.
thanks for the update. I played it for many years until jun shihan (tozan ryu). sorry, I found it just didn't cut it compared to the boem system flutes. scales? well, that's your opinion. I was glad to give it up frankly. tonally very limited and repetative. two songs about does it.
There are other jazz performances on YouTube that are much better IMHO. By this I mean that it keeps some traditional feeling while being true jazz music. I am studying shakuhachi so I know one or two things about it. To me this player has amazing technique but he has completely westernized the instrument, so to me it is no more shakuhachi. But once again this is solely my opinion ;)
Those overtones, that vibrato, and that variation between notes sounds like a transverse flute? Hmmmm. I also like the "out of context with the Shakuhachi" comment. It's out of context in terms of rules and traditions maybe. What would it sound like without the preconceptions? (I'm not saying this is THE ideal performance.)
Good! Can't take too much of shakuhachi though... A couple of songs is about all. The sound wears thin after that. Pentatonic scale only, although some guys drill extra holes or rejig existing ones to allow more diatonic usage.
catandpittle, listen to it again. it's not pentatonic, just cause it has 5 holes everyone assumes it's pentatonic. I can play 2 octaves chromatically. if you can't hear it your not a very good listener or just a very bad musician who doesn't know his scales.
Wonderful stuff, can't help feeling the rest of the band are being a little limited due to the constricting presence of the shakuhachi - though the shakuhachi itself and the way it flows with the rest of the band is fantastic. I'll hunt you guys down once I visit Tokyo! PS Saori Sendo does indeed rock, she really stood out in this video (and not just because she's female)!
I never knew George Lucas played bass.

Very nice composition,
feeling and atmospher.
I enjoyed listening shakuhachi this way.
I am sure he has mastered traditionals
then continuing in modern way, which I believe is very important for keeping the music alive.
Would like to hear more with piano player
duo. YAMADA

Impressive technique for sure, but where's the spirit? Not my cup of tea, sounds more like a transverse flute to me.

This Shakuhachi Flute what is this of Scale of this Flute? Or who can buying this Flute?
BigBuddha3 4 years ago
if close yr eyes and just listen, this is just the sound of flute, nothing special, i dont feel this is great
punchiman2 4 years ago
I don't think jazz really does the shakuhaci justice. It's all about breath control and subtle nuance.
This song is more complex and looses the meaning. The bassline reminds me of Salt Peanuts by Dizzy.
