this is why i drive me a classic american truck, 1979 stepside gmc, with a 350 that has no emmisions bull shit on it. the only emmisions that i have hooked up on it are the pcv, and a quadrajet carburetor.
I the proud owner of one of these 6.5 engines, and i get 12-18 mpg, which is just as good as the newer trucks, just without all the bells and whistles. Thing is, i didn't pay $30,000+ for it

I bought my 1994 3/4T diesel Suburban new. It has 190,000 miles on it with many more to go. I don't know if I'll EVER sell it........The "Cash For Clunkers" program was a a complete FLOP and a waste of the taxpayers money.
If the auto mechanics who were required to blow up these cars/trucks had any balls they WOULD not of blew up the engine on purpose. Killing old cars just costs them their job in the long run.

The old 6.5 might not make as much power as the Duramax, but it won't put you on the street with repair bills, either.

this is one of the biggest waste i have ever seen. taking a perfect functional truck and trowing it away as if it is useless. looks clean, runs good, it's a diesel and it's most likely a 4x4. hell, i would pay $4,500 truck if i had a chance to buy it, but now it is sitting in a scrap yard when it could have been put to good use. What a shame.
@watso64 That was a 6.5 turbo, not as gutless as you might think. The turbos commonly dont work on 6.5s due to failed vacuum controlled wastegates. As old as these trucks are, the weakest links have come out to play. I ditched my vacuum wastegate on my 6.5 for a mechanical one.
Wouldn't have thought there was a 6.2/6.5 of any type that would qualify. Sad, wasteful.
As others have pointed out, it sure could have been converted to run biodiesel or waste vegetable oil--after which it would have operated more cleanly than whatever replaced it.

My 97 F150 4.6L has 175,000 miles on it and runs like new, passes smog checks with flying colers and is considered a LEV (Low Emissions Vehicle) because Ford put 4 catalytic converters on it lol. Never gonna become a clunker.

I bought my 1994 3/4T diesel Suburban new. It has 190,000 miles on it with many more to go. I don't know if I'll EVER sell it........The "Cash For Clunkers" program was a a complete FLOP and a waste of the taxpayers money.

C.A.R.S. was a boom for Toyota, Honda, Nissan and other non-US vehicles, Ford was the bigger winner of the US makers & Ford isn't a government owned maker! I'm betting that many of the trade-ins under the C4C had bad transmissions or other major problems as well as vehicles that the owners just couldn't sell off otherwise. When you get government involved it's almost assured to flop & cost the tax payers. C4C cost well above $4500 per vehicle (admin cost).

You screwed up a perfectly good truck. I've been under the hood of just about any car you can name, and I can tell you for a certainty that that truck was far better-designed than the new Silverados. The old 6.5 might not make as much power as the Duramax, but it won't put you on the street with repair bills, either.

I looked high and low for this truck, and good luck trying to get it from me!! 20 mpg plus ability to easily convert to bio-fuel, I just don't understand how people lose the sense they were born with.

thats horrible. cash for clunkers failed. auto companies sales fell badly after program stopped. then they offered rebates that were just as good as the cash they got for used cars they traded in. so people that held onto decent running vehicles got to sell them and get the huge rebate that was offered by auto companies.. government doesn't do a good job at looking at the full picture. not to mention putting mechanics out of work. the guy behind wheel must of been hating himself for that

I have one just like this. Such a waste of a good truck. I have 260,000 miles on mine and about to go on a 2,000 mile trip with absolutely no worries. It gets better than 20mpg too, no idea why it qualified for this program. I hope the dealer didnt get paid for this one.

this is one of the biggest waste i have ever seen. taking a perfect functional truck and trowing it away as if it is useless. looks clean, runs good, it's a diesel and it's most likely a 4x4. hell, i would pay $4,500 truck if i had a chance to buy it, but now it is sitting in a scrap yard when it could have been put to good use. What a shame.

@watso64 That was a 6.5 turbo, not as gutless as you might think. The turbos commonly dont work on 6.5s due to failed vacuum controlled wastegates. As old as these trucks are, the weakest links have come out to play. I ditched my vacuum wastegate on my 6.5 for a mechanical one.

As others have pointed out, it sure could have been converted to run biodiesel or waste vegetable oil--after which it would have operated more cleanly than whatever replaced it.

My 97 F150 4.6L has 175,000 miles on it and runs like new, passes smog checks with flying colers and is considered a LEV (Low Emissions Vehicle) because Ford put 4 catalytic converters on it lol. Never gonna become a clunker.

I cannot believe the car dealer was stupid enough to clunker this truck, instead of putting it on the used lot and selling it for the same amount!
