Excellent job of bringing an intensely theatric dimension to the battle scene. So little space, few people and resources but all the more captivating. Puts the CGI and special effects of vast battlefield depictions to shame. This is smashing! Makes everything else look like a computer game.
@radagastthe3rd good :), I KNOW Ian Mckellen spoke highly of him, but it's nice to hear that people who knew what they were talking about, praised him. He really is one of the best. It's a shame that he's too old to paly Bilbo. He's wonderful as Bilbo, and frankly anything he puts his skills to..
@lamlyn Ian Holm's "Lear" is my favorite, even over McKellan or Paul Scofield. Very angry, abrasive, and the madness like a burning ball of barbed wire. He's very well known and appreciated.
It must have been quite a temptation for Monsieur Brian Blessed not to quote his famous line: Chiswick! Fresh horses! (from the first historical series about the secret chronicles) while smashing his enemies with a mace; he is the only person in this demented slaughterhouse of a world who I will never mock because of his name Brian with Monty Python s Life of Brian...

Sorry to keeo banging on about it but...Ian Holm!! Seriously under-appreciated as an actor, among the very best ever.

@lamlyn he was VERY appreciated by his fellow actors. I know that in the cast commentaries for LOTR they talk a LOT about his skills.
