Wonderful! Until now I've had just two favorite recordings of "Deep River" - Paul Robeson's and Odetta's - but now I can add Marian Anderson's as easily their equal.
excellent. anyone wanting to hear a really good version of this song check out on youtube les young deep river. a beautiful lyric and large bass voice. he was struck down much too early in a career in an auto accident that had him struggeling to continue. but continue he did and sounded phenominal. such singers as ezio flagello and jerome hines counted him as one of their favorite voices and students.
Marian couldn't afford music lessons, so her church friends paid for them. It's all thanks to those people who shared their money that Marian became famous.
So many have posted such wonderful things to say about Marian Anderson's talent I don't know what to add. All I can say is I am so moved by her ladylike beauty, and of course her matchless voice.
Those notes, as deep as the meaning conveyed by her!! Thanks to this video, we can enjoy her dignifying presence for years to come! Thank you for posting this, from the bottom of my heart. Life is better, far better just because of the immense pleasure of listening to her!! I have spent white nights in her wonderful company while reading or drawing!
I am reading a bio of this great human being and artist. I get angry that she was often treated as less thn equal in the United States How Horrible for the US!!!!! Her dignity and singing are beacons of courage and talent.
So sad isn't it. But she paved the way for many of the young artists now. I hope that look at these clips and appreciate people like this great woman of God. She was truly a gift from heaven.
One of the most beautiful voices ever! As a child in the contryside of Norway my family every Monday used to listen to a special radio concert based on wishes from the listeners. Ave Maria sung by Marian Anderson was a favourite. So I have known and loved her since the 1950's. I am now reading her autobiography. It was not easy for her to get the necessary education owing to the racism at that time. Thank God that has changed! (?)
I must agree with you MissLimLam, Just by watching a Documentary on Miss Anderson's life this afternoon I have rekindled a love that I once thought could only be found in romantic movies, fictional love stories I'm 15
@MissLimLam YOU SPEAK THE TRUTH!!! I'm so sick of not being taken seriously when I speak of opera. Well, that was back then...but I still think that young people should be taken seriously in this manner.
@MissLimLam Wow i'm really impressed. If u really like good classical singing u should look up a singer named Renee Fleming. idk if u already know who she is but if u like good classical and opera, Renee Fleming is top notch. If u don't know who she is i'm sure you'll enjoy her.
@MissLimLam -- Hi! When I was in high school I saw a class movie featuring Marian Anderson and loved her ever since. I love her rich, reverent interpretation. Have you heard Jessye Norman's recordings? She is magnificent and has, I believe, similar deep, rich interpretation as Marian. Jessye is also featured on YouTube.
I am glad that she walked this earth and used her God given talent. I am moved by her voice and the way that she is so connected with her breathing. Amazing.
Marian Anderson possessed one of those special voices and artistry that had such a depth not only in terms of the voice itself, but in the conviction and committment to the music she performed. She is an inspiration to all singers regardless of genre, and though her operatic career was not as grand as African American Sopranos who came after her, the impact she has made in the history of African Americans, and American History period will always have a profound effect.
yeeaaa i have to do her for a book report she has the most BEAUTIFUL voice ever!!!! and likke well im doin a book report its this stupid "wax museum" thingy
Anderson sang the best "Deep River" of all times! IMO Marian Anderson had some kind of "spiritual" magnetism that always made her recordings of sacred songs sound deeper and more sincere than the other singers' versions. The dark but delicate beauty of her contralto voice also helped to create that great atmosphere. ;-)
It's nice to see her singing in informal surroundings. Almost as if she is singing to me personally. Superb. To see a great singer completely at ease, and in surroundings which seem familiar to her. A gem. A lot better than my captured out of sync streaming videos!
Awesome. Absolutely stellar voice. This song, they way Marian sang it, moved me.

Deep river, my home is over Jordan
Deep river, Lord, I want to cross over into camp-groind
Deep river, my home is over Jordan
Deep river, Lord, I want to cross over into camp-ground
Oh don't you want to go
To that gospel feast
That promis'd land
Where all is peace?
Oh deep river, Lord,
I want to cross over into camp-ground feast

Besides being a great Contralto; what grace, class, dignity I see portrayed on that stage, leaves me in awe and amazement, really!

I am 13 and she is my favourite singer.
I was asked who my favourite person that plays my instrument is. I am a singer. I do not sing Opera, but I still said Marian Anderson.
My teacher was surprised that I had ever heard of Marian, so she asked for my second favourite singer, then third, fourth and fifth, they were:
2nd : Sumi Jo
3rd : Placido Dominigo
4th : Maria Callas
5th : Montserrat Caballe
I dont think that appreciating talent has an age limit. You can be any age to enjoy this. :D
