@Kirty7 Two observations. 1. Mozart didn't compose "by the rules." Nor did many others. It was only through their innovation that music continued to evolve. 2. There are very few "rules." Beyond some basics of particular forms, i.e. fugal writing, real "rules" don't exist. When you take a theory course, you're taught to never move in parallel fifths and octaves...and then you're taught (by a good teacher) to "ignore those rules." Math only controls how many beats to the bar & not always that
@hipepleful Depends upon whom you ask. In his day, there were very strict rules... about the use of leading tones, suspension, and a bunch of other things. He was successful, largely because he understood the rules, and then proceeded to break them regularly. Example: For hundreds of years (even to a degree today) there was a rule that said in voice writing, never move two voices in parallel fifths or parallel octaves. There are "reasons" for that, but it can be very creative.
i was just attempting to learn this exact minuet out of the oxford book. it says Mozart composed it at the age of 6. Even in it's simplicity the chord arrangements are still beyond my imagination. I notice this with Bach's music too. Like I would have never though to insert that F# chord..
Why did you play a classical piece on a harpsichord? That type of music doesn't match the harpsichord; I'm sorry to say. It's intended for piano/orchestral instruments, this minuet.
Baroque minuets/dance rhythms, indeed can be played on the former instrument.
@turbonelli Bullshit by me. All early piano works by Mozart were intendended to be played on Cristofori-like pianos aka "hammerklavier". The sound of these are far from a modern piano and fairly close to a harpischord.
@123456789derts well he is no question about that .... but you should ( if you havent read about him ) i kinda like Beethoven more .... seeemed like a way more powerful composer and person
I too believe Leopold Mozart was superior, but stylewise, at his time, Johann Sebastian Bach had a more "modern" classical style.
I completely agree with your definition of genius. Him and a few other musican/composers of the 16th/17th century, brought music to a whole different level. The reason why they are the most famous, besides being talented, is that they created a new type of music..just like michael jordan invented the modern way of playing basketball, cross overs, and dunks.
Mozart composed this song when he was 3 years old? Is that true? If it is, then was, Mozart is really amazing and talented, and it is such a waste he didn't live past 30...
The point below is valid. Mozart's genius does get blown out of proportion a lot and his creativity over romanticized. He was a human of his time like everybody else. Mozart indisputably had remarkable facility and speed and a relative ease in musical composition but he needed it to be competitive. Not to diminish him in any way; he was reared solely for a life in music. It was his inherited family business.
Dont flatter him too much. Mozart just like any other talented person, the only thing that speaks for them is the talent and talent aint something a person can create, its given.
Yea this one sucks. Mozart is a genius and a prodigy but damn this song stinks. Don't give me that "he was 7 years old" thing, he was a prodigy right? No point in calling him that if he writes music any 7 year old pianist can. His other work is much better.
Mozart wrote his first minuets when he was just 4... This kid was a mathematical genius and created and performed all his works at the age you were still pissing the bed.
From what Mozart was to become, came from his early works. What breaks my heart is the thought of WHATIF he lived past the age of 50. Experts say Mozart never reached his prime age for composing. He was still just a youngster musician when he died. Still, he has been rated the best composer of all time.
@Centauru5 There is no conclusive evidence that Mozart was a Mathematical genius. Although math is integral in acoustics and interval relationships, during Mozart's time, it wasn't a compositional consideration outside rhythm and phrase. It was the counterpoint and musical balance within his compositions that showed his genius.
Additionally, I think the "best rated" composer goes to J.S. Bach. I know all my music professors think so.
Personally my favorite is Franz Liszt-just look at his vast compositional output, he composed/transcribed/arranged over 1000 pieces for solo piano alone! And not all of them are showy like most people think when they think of Liszt-many of them are beautiful pieces.
In my opinion Beethoven symphonies are much more qualitative than Mozart's. Quantity or quality? Also I like Beethoven piano sonatas over Mozarts. Not to say Mozart wasn't a good composer of course.
@Kirty7 The sound waves that comprise music may be mathematically describable, but it doesn't follow that it takes a knowledge of such mathematics to create masterpieces such as Mozart's. Physics is also math, but Einstein wasn't a mathematical genius; in fact, he had to rely on the expertise of more able and competent mathematicians for his theories, especially in light of the fact that his papers were fraught with errors in mathematical reasoning. Einsten was a physic's genius; cont...

@twistoftime i thought the rules were pretty much, just musical notation, and the musical theory (like what a trill is).

Mozart had logical and balanced musical phrases down by the time he was 6. So he had the next 30 years to perfect beauty.

I don't really know what talent is. I have yet to experience a brink of pure unexplained genius, but I differentiate talent from say, smart, by this.
A smart person can think up an idea logically and easily. You could claim that you could come up with the same thing.
But a genius would come up with something that no one else around can dream up.
Talent is superior, but being smart and careful is generally better in society because it is more acceptable.

Also, he did live past thirty. He lived to thirty five, I think.
