Electric motors have no problem with acceleration, just with top speed or how to increase the peak output power. More powerfull electric motor means more weight. On the other hand with speed you have drag of air resistance which increases with square of velocity.
@Agamemnon3333 the electric engine's weight is not the problem, they are very small compared to gasoline engines. the main issue is the heavy battery pack, and once we are able to efficiently use carbon nanotubes instead of lithium batteries the problem is solved. and besides, on what normal street would you want to go +240 km/h? acceleration and cornering is everything, bugatti top speeds are just for show off

Do not attempt to race a Tesla Roadster. While I don't condone street racing, I sometimes engage in spirited runs down deserted roads. I'm pushing a light 475hp German roadster. A black Tesla had me by two car lengths and I couldn't catch him on brief runs. It's like competing against the future.

@armd86 IDK but my GEM golf cart batteries cost over 1K they really only last 2 years. These are just six 12V deep cycle Trojan batteries. I looked up the Tesla battery price....ready.....36K. @Hunne0815 Yeah just compared it to a e92 BMW M3 and 0-160 times are 11.5 for the Roadster and 9.4 for the BMW. If it had more torque, then it would be a win for the Roadster.
In America, where we have speed limits, acceleration is more useful than sustained speed.
And by the way, an electric motor can give out 100% torque, whether accelerating from 0 to 60 or from 100 to 120. So on the Autobahn, the Tesla would be not be ridiculed. It may not be the fastest, but it could hold it's own.

@Mass7507: Wrong, the batteries are recyclable. Also, producing hydrogen for fuel takes a lot of energy. Hydrogen is everywhere, but it bonds with other elements, requiring energy to produce it in a usable form. It's not really practical because it takes more energy to produce hydrogen fuel than you actually get from using the fuel. In summary, hydrogen cars are NOT pollution free. Electric Vehicles are more efficient and pollute less ESPECIALLY if they are charged from solar, wind, or hydro.

@Hunne0815 Yeah just compared it to a e92 BMW M3 and 0-160 times are 11.5 for the Roadster and 9.4 for the BMW. If it had more torque, then it would be a win for the Roadster.

In America, where we have speed limits, acceleration is more useful than sustained speed.
And by the way, an electric motor can give out 100% torque, whether accelerating from 0 to 60 or from 100 to 120. So on the Autobahn, the Tesla would be not be ridiculed. It may not be the fastest, but it could hold it's own.

@lzbriscoe Well.. I drive on the Autobahn almost every week :) Don't get me wrong.. I've driven in the Tesla Roadster and it's fun, especially on roads that require lots of breaking and accelerating.
In high speed driving torque is not everything though...you need power .. and that for longer than a few minutes.

I understand about power and torque... the point I was making is that it's not a car built for constant high-speed driving. It's more of a braking/accelerating sports car, like you said.
I guess since it's originally an American car, it's not prepared for Germany's roads =P

@ThaWhistle very very little acctually. the new battery technology is not like lead acid, the graph of discharge of a lead acid is slowly incline to 0% were as the newer batteries are more of a straight line, then a sudden rapid drop to 0% so you wont go much slower on a 75% charge than a 95%

uhhh.....a 330xi huh? bmws slowest car?....how about...a m3 sport car vs sport car, and while we are at it BMW is a european car, so lets put the 06 european CSL bmw up against it.. 3,050 lbs nearly 400 HP vs electric 2,500 lbs hp(??)....hmmm...oh and lets do paddle shift instead of manual....i hate when people race non-racing cars vs performance cars(gas or electric)

@Mass7507: Wrong, the batteries are recyclable. Also, producing hydrogen for fuel takes a lot of energy. Hydrogen is everywhere, but it bonds with other elements, requiring energy to produce it in a usable form. It's not really practical because it takes more energy to produce hydrogen fuel than you actually get from using the fuel. In summary, hydrogen cars are NOT pollution free. Electric Vehicles are more efficient and pollute less ESPECIALLY if they are charged from solar, wind, or hydro.

Eh, no. The guy yells "Go!" right after the light turns green and you can hear the guy floor it right afterward. The BMW driver's reaction wasn't as good in this case.
Either way, the Tesla would have won but thats not the fairest matchup :)

they didnt go on his saying "go". they went on GREEN. the guy just yelled go to the driver in the tesla.. the bmw is no match, tesla does 0-60 in 3.9 seconds, full torque, 1 gear

I'm aware of this..I was replying to 'neckojezioro123' who said the Tesla did a false launch. I was clarifying, stating that it was in fact a good launch.
