I would love to have one like this too :) everyone thinks funerals have to be so somber--i mean everyone's already hurting from losing their loved one--- well this is a way to rejoice in their life and be happy. I want people celebrating at my funeral not sitting there all sad and quiet--whats the point. If i was there and alive I wouldnt want to be sitting there quiet lol. New Orleans has it right :)
My wife thinks I'm crazy... But I want to have a Funeral March like this, with the 2nd line when I'm in the ground! A true celebration of life, indeed!
@uptboi31 I agree. I moved to New Orleans from Seattle. Although people pride themselves as being culturally diverse, I never felt so alive as I did in New Orleans.
@MrZedfour everything. as native of louisiana, i know u could eat for weeks and still not taste it all. I would start of with jamabalya, Po boy sandwichs, or cafe du mon coffee and benets
I notice I see musicians that are older in age. Are there any youngsters who will carry on this tradition? Or does this wonderful ritual die with the older generation as so many other have?
This tradition goes from generation to generation and will never die! That's why most of us who have grown up here didn't even consider leaving after Hurricane Katrina! My family has been here for over 300 years, there's nowhere else I'd rather be! Gotta love our unique and beautiful city!
@dreadgyrl actually there are a lot of young brass bands also..check out the UNO Jazz Funeral/Protest; it was led the Free Agency Brass Band and they are young people..
It sounds like someone needs to visit New Orleans! Nowhere else in the world knows how to celebrate life wish such gusto. Just be careful, you might never want to leave!
I lived in New Orleans three years and saw a couple of these funeral parades. "Just A Closer Walk With Thee" is nearly alwys the piece played going to the funeral. Afterwards the music turns to more jazz music and is fantastic. Jim
My Step-Dad was real deal jazz musician. We hired The Magnolia Brass Band here in Toronto for his funeral. What a send-off. It was a sad occasion, but the jazz very uplifting for all.
the thing no one really gets is, you cant just say "Im gonna have a jazz funeral when i die" you have to be a important member in the jazz community. and none of these people are payed or anything, there marching to commemerate there friend. so if you know an entire jazz ensamble then sure, im sure u can have one.
you can see the African influence..the march is beautiful and eery at the same time...In Dominican Republic they play something similar except its only percussion but the same feel of a march for the dead
Ive also asked my children to have a funeral like this.Someone can use my Grand Marshall clothes with whom Ive paraded for years in Argentina and Dresden,Germany.
St James infirmary, closer walk with thee, when the saints, down by the riverside,on the sunnyside of the street..etc etc
The clods with the cameras and the tourists spoil it somewhat but my God! What a wonderful tradition. I love jazz music - all of it - so much, it is so rich, I wish more Americans understood and enjoyed this wonderful part of our heritage
I wish all the tourists would get out of the way.

A send of like this must ease the distress of the departed's loved ones. It is very uplifting.
Thank you for sharing this insight to a tradition of New Orleans.

actually there was a fellow up here who did just that a month ago. He was terminal and hired a brass band 3 days before he died.
It was nice that the band did it. They didn't have to.

Thanks Joeybsmooth - I didn't realise this was an extra slow version of "St James Infirmary". It's great!

I want them to play St James when I die. So if they are not sad from me,dying they would be sad after that song.

Wow... Just gives me chills.
I've decided that I will:
1. Play in a Jazz Funeral at least once.
2. Have a Jazz Funeral when my time finally comes.
What a way to go out.
