This video is somehow misleading. It shows Iranian cinema in 2002. Now after 6 years, many things have changed. Most of good directors are not able to make any new films. 1997 to 2005 was the best period of Iranian cinema, when Khatami was president of Iran.
The Islamic Republic's cinema is the best in Iranian history, and the freedom filmmakers have to criticize their system is such that we get to hear about it, in contrast with the situation in our West in which we hilariously believe ourselves to be free and strongholds of objective freedom.

You are right, the western societies need to be more responsible in film making too. Television, silver screen, music and all other forms of media are powerful tools. Like any tool, it can be used for good intentions or maliciously exploited.

An interesting video - while I would agree that film is important in Iran in that it 'explores and exposes the darker side of society', it would be a mistake to think that this is unique to Iran -there are many dark sides to Western society and the West could do with a similar, honest 'new wave' of cinema.

I think the problems iranian filmmakers are trying to express are not the kind of problems western countries are immune to...which country can claim that they do not have prostitution or poverty ? To different extents, everyone does. The only reason why the current iranian regime doesn't like the world to know that we have such problems is because they kicked out the shah saying they would eliminate such problems in our country, but they didn't!

This video is somehow misleading. It shows Iranian cinema in 2002. Now after 6 years, many things have changed. Most of good directors are not able to make any new films. 1997 to 2005 was the best period of Iranian cinema, when Khatami was president of Iran.

You are right, the western societies need to be more responsible in film making too. Television, silver screen, music and all other forms of media are powerful tools. Like any tool, it can be used for good intentions or maliciously exploited.
But the flip side of the argument is that governments shouldn't be banning films. It's a violation of civil rights, and must not be tolerated. So where do we draw the line? Who decides whats right and wrong, moral or immoral. we do.

An interesting video - while I would agree that film is important in Iran in that it 'explores and exposes the darker side of society', it would be a mistake to think that this is unique to Iran -there are many dark sides to Western society and the West could do with a similar, honest 'new wave' of cinema.
