The wheels go square because they always touch the ground flat on a ripstick like this. On roller blades the angle of the wheel vs the angle of the ground changes from 90 (straight) to about 45 when turning. That causes the side of the wheel to wear.

With a ripstick however, the casters rotate the wheel while turning, so while the board is carving, the wheel are perpendicular to the ground and parallel to the direction of travel.

Brilliant design, really.
