  • Thanks for these videos! I've got a PSL that I built several years ago using some US reciever (kinda butchered it, really, but it goes bang just fine). My scope isn't directly over the barrel for some reason. How is the scope rail attached to the reciever? Is it spot welded? I need help fixing this thing

  • @abanyai123 It is spot welded and it isnt suppose to be directly over the barrel. Thats how it is designed to be left offset around 2 inches.

  • lorddinaire, I would be interested in the 2 ammo boxes of Czech 54r.

  • I'm going to be honest, I'm not sure how you managed this, but you apparently got one of the better built rifles. I can shoot .25" at 100 with my 700, but I am lucky to get 4" out of my PSL. I'm beginning to suspect I've got a problem with my optics or my barrel...

  • @Abaddonseven I have 2 PSLs and both are getting this kind of accuracy. Mostly the problem with PSLs isnt the barrel or rifle, it is the ammo your using. I have tested almost every type of x54r ammo out there and the most common i was lucky to get 4 MOA yes but when i used Russian light ball i was hitting 2 MOA and the 1-1.5 MOA was done with Bulgarian steel core which is now very hard to find. Happy i stocked up on 6 cases while they were available. Try different ammo first.

  • @sgtking11b Thanks for that tip. I'll watch for some Russian or Bulgarian.

  • @Abaddonseven Anytime.

  • Imagine what you might get with handloads. I'm going to order some Bulgarian ammo right now!

  • I'm very confused about the use of surplus corrosive ammo in my PSL. I was using the Partisan non corrosive but it's so expensive that I bought two cans of the corrosive surplus and now, after reading some experiences about that ammo I don't know what to do with those cans. In the way some people talk, it seems to be that the rifle will melt down after the shooting with corrosive. If someone here with real and long experience using corrosive ammo can give me his opinion, really appreciated.

  • @lorddinaire no your rifle will be fine. 99% of surplus x54r is "mild" corrosive. This means just clean your rifle at least in a few days after shooting it. Use ammonia, windex or some other solvent used for black powder rifles, even soapy hot water will do. All this does is kill the corrosive salts from the primers. I use Ballistol with no issues and all my x54r rifles are nothing but surplus mild corrosive ammo. Who ever told you your rifle will melt down for using it is full of shit.

  • @sgtking11b Thanks again. I'm going to open the cans now..

  • @lorddinaire Anytime. If you know anyone looking for a stock of czech 7.62x54r silver tip steel core let me know. I have 2 .50cal cans slam full of them. I use the Bulgarian and Russian stuff in my rifles.

  • @sgtking11b I will. If I didn't buy those cans I'll take it for myself, but I have for some time now.

  • @lorddinaire Understandable. Stay tuned, tomorrow i am going to the range to test out some body armor made by International Armor Corp. I will be burning 10-20 rounds of the Czech silver tip and Russian through the PSLs to try and punch through the plate. We are going to have everything from 7.62x51, 7.62x54r light and heavy ball, 7.62x39, 5.56x45 M855 and M193, a well as 5.45x39. Maybe even some 12gauge shotgun slugs if the guys bring some out to top it off.

  • @sgtking11b Excellent test. Hope you can also do it from the maximum, medium and terminal ballistics of each ammo. Specially the 54R that in my opinion it's almost an anti- material round. I'l be tuned.

  • @lorddinaire the plate was a complete catastrophic failure. We were told NIJ III per testing 0101.04 specs. Label indicated AK-47 only or lesser at 15 meters... NIJ level III is a 7.62x51 148gr M80 ball round at 3-6 shots 5 meters (16.4 feet) from muzzle to target... Vice President indicated the plates were label AK for marketing but assured me they were NIJ III. It failed first shot on our NIJ III test... Hell it even failed AK impacts! The plate is a serious wash do NOT buy them. Vids to come.

  • have one and you are correct this gun is very acc !

  • I don't know why people expect to have some difference in precision between PSL and Dragunov? It is the same ammo, same length/thickness of barrel and same speed of the bullet and the same disadvantage of the barrel whip.

Just the mechanism has some differences.

    Should be the same deal.

If the ammo is surplus than that is ammo for the PKM machine-gun and is not supposed to be overly well done.

  • @Lightspit well put lightspit very well put.

  • @Lightspit The mechanics of it make a GREAT DEAL of difference. That's why bolt-action rifles will nearly always be more accurate than a semi-auto of the same price/quality. Simply put, the Dragunov/Tiger/SVD inner mechanism is more inherently accurate than the PSL, which is basically just a ramped-up AK style mechanism. The Dragunov was created from scratch specifically to be a sniper's weapon. The PSL was simply taken from existing AK designs and bumped up to 7.62x54R caliber.

  • @Badjedidude

    Except they aren't more accurate.

  • i dont go 600 .. i think 400 is the max for this rifle if you really want to have fun..nice video..

  • amen brother mine shoots great at 600 yds and it continues to make me smile!!!!

  • what brand of ammo were you uesing?

  • @harrybushman bulgarian light ball

  • Can you do the same test over a metallic plate?. It will be very interesting to observe

the terminal ballistic of this gun over something tick like a 1/4 or 1/2 inch (or something like that) iron plate.

  • @lorddinaire We have done this with the EGI 1/4 steel ballistic rifle plate. I will see if i have a video somewhere of it.

  • @sgtking11b Thanks.

  • PSL-rocks!

  • You're doing better than that. 6moa at 600 meters is 36". 1 moa at 600 is 6", which is what you got. Impressive.

  • Wow, that's 10x better than my Mosin Nagant

  • So I took a trip to a gun store in my area and you can't believe what I found. It was a Chinese NDM-86 in .308! They said only a few dozen rounds had been fired through it and its been in their hands for a while. Considering that only 2000 or so were actually imported, I was surprised they had it. However, they are charging $3899 plus its a 7% sales tax. Is it worth it?

  • @crazyinsane105 Yes it is normal retail for the NDM-86 are upwardsof 6000.00-8000.00 depending on the condition and if the person selling it knows what they have. I do not shoot NATO cals, im all com-bloc so if you have .308 id say jump on it! I just do not want to pay 1.00 a round for .308. Im happy with my x54r at 0.18 a round with ballistics closer to a 30-06.

  • @sgtking11b Yeah I'll get it once I have the cash available. I doubt the gun store has any idea how much that is worth, one of the guys who worked there didn't know what a Romanian PSL even was!

  • @crazyinsane105 Most of them dont, they just think it is true SVD. Hell i have been to shops that didnt even know the difference between an SKS and AK.

  • @sgtking11b NATO cals suck big time

  • @crazyinsane105 You might want to do some research about it first. Several .308 caliber NDM-86s were recalled due to safety reasons.

  • If you honestly shot this I am very impressed. Good for you bud. I was going to buy a PSL but I opted to get a siaga 7.62 to convert for my wife and a used glock 19 also for the wife. Both for th same price of the PSL. I should have been more selfish and bought the PSL. o well, peace with you my freind!

  • @ramtron1775 Yes i actually took these shots. It was not easy with a x4 i can tell you that much and i had to ask permission to from two neighbors to shoot through their yards in order to get this distance. I am looking for a range here that is out to 800 meters so i dont have to fire through several yards to gain the distance. This range is max 400 meters unfortunately. The PSL is a nice rifle if your in the market for one look around they have dropped around 400-500 now i see.

  • @sgtking11b LOL thats a funny story. also I dint take into consideration that you were using a 4x that makes your group even more impressive.6moa 600good enough to be a squad DMR rifle. what was your hold... The PSL is not only a good shooter it is also a pretty good looking rifle. The only thing kind of odd is the skinny light barrel. But I doubt anyone would ever shoot it enough for it to make a difrence.$4-500 shit, times are tough now, got a wife in dental school. One day God willing. Peace

  • @ramtron1775 Drop was -65.6" at that range. Luckily the x4 scope i can dope down to 1k before i have to hold over. All i needed to do was dope the scope and i was on par. That day i was lucky to receive about a 2-3 MPH tail wind, temp was around 85 degrees so two rounds brought it out of cold bore easy. As for the light thin barrel it is not as problematic as most think. While it heats up faster it also cools faster for follow ups. So your good if your not a twitcher.

  • Four people are jealous of this guy.....

  • Thank you for the PSL accuracy videos. With all the video game fanboi and airsoft rangers running amock, its refreshing to see someone who knows how to shoot a rifle for accuracy. Outstanding!

  • no shit 5.8 MOA with an ak variant, surplus ammo to boot?

  • @davism4a1 No shit. Showed a few of my Army buddies this in person and they couldnt believe it either. I am going to make a new video soon when i go to run through some rounds on my SKS bullpup conversion and i will make a full vid from walking from target to firing line and back to target to show anyone who doesnt believe the shots are real. I will start with a 100 meter range and work my way back.

  • @sgtking11b i would love to see that, i just bought a norinco sks

  • @davism4a1 Both of my SKSs are Yugos but i have a buddy with a Norinco SKS. I mainly like the Yugos for the threaded barrel.

  • Did you build your own psl? Thats damn good accuracy.

  • @RyanInSD No one was directly from the romanian factory the other was a TN build

  • first I would like to say that was some damn good shooting my best group using surplus ammo was about 6 in at 400 yards ( I dont have any 600m ranges in my area :( ) and while I love my PSL it is mosy definatly not as good as the Dagunov a friend of mine actualy got one back when you still could and he shoots about 3 inch groups with it from a rest at 400m also it definatly seems to kick less mabe because of the short stroke gas system(PSL has long stroke for those who dont know) PSL still ROCKS

  • @wild50gunner Correct the short stroke system does generate less recoil. Just like the SKS has less recoil than an AK. SVDs with hand loads are tac drivers but so are PSLs with hand loads. I have found that the SVD and PSL are on par with each other on accuracy. I went with the PSL because it was more cost effective for me while if i had the chance to get my hands on a milspec SVD i would jump all over it even if i had to take out a loan from the bank to get one HAHA

  • I'm little bit tired of this really short stock. I'm 6.2, lefty and it's not constable. I was thinking to built one or adapt a foldable stock that fit the length of my arms and fits my hand. The questions is: Do you know if it's legal in FL a foldable stock (weird to ask what to do with your property but that's how the things go) for the PSL-54c?. Thanks.

  • @lorddinaire The only time a side folding stock would be illegal is if the weapon is under 21 inches total length when the stock is folded which is not going to happen with a full size PSL for sure. The under folders are illegal because they under fold, really stupid but what ever. Now just to let you know it would take a lot of work to adapt a fold stock to the PSL because of the receiver design. Id recommend getting a PSL stock kit that is adjustable. I have a set and i love them. PM sent.

  • @sgtking11b Very good info. Thank you very much.

  • @lorddinaire No problem. Happy i could help.

  • @sgtking11b Hey, thanks. I'm not sure what you mean with under folder. If the stock folds to the right or left is legal but if it folds from 9 to 3 (like a watch) it's illegal?.

  • @lorddinaire A side folder is a stock that folds from side to side IE left or right. An underfolder stock is a stock that rotates downward and flips under the lower side of the receiver. The stock has two bars allowing the pistol grip and mag to pass between the opening of the stock. These are illegal. You will still see some out there so as long as they are preban they are legal.

  • Thank you for this video. I was debating whether I should go ahead with a PSL or save up... like 8 grand for a real SVD. I have made my decision.

  • @TotallyDanSmithin I went through the same thing when i was wanting an SVD as well. 8k for a Tiger or 850.00 for a PSL. All the bad reviews (a friend of a friend of a friend said it sucks kind of reviews) made me shy away from it for a while until finally broke down and figured, screw it ill give it a try. First one was the Cugir i purchased for 1200.00 and found they were just as good as a SVD. So purchased another one to make sure i just didnt get lucky, second one just as good as the first.

  • I recently bought ammo for my PSL but is 150 gr instead of 148gr..Do you think that makes a difference?

  • i was in the army and the psl romak its precise weapon

  • That's some nice shooting! Have you tried the Czech Silvertip lightball? Supposedly the best surplus stuff out there right now.

  • @MrNoobGuitarist yeah i have tried the silvertip and it is crap. It works great in the mosin nagant but in the PSLs i was lucky to get under 6 MOA with it. The bulgarian steelcore works the best for my PSLs and even mosins. Most people think if you pay 0.50 a round for ST its better and the bulgarian at 0.18 a round is just surplus crap. I have to say, bulgarian steelcore is awesome and is mild AP hehe. The bulgarian SC was what i have used in this vid and all accuracy vids for the PSL.

  • Nice!

  • I have a question. Its been a while since you uploaded a new video about your long range PSL shoots. Are you going to slap on a more high powered scope and try out the PSL at 600 yards, or further? And are you ever going to use handloaded ammunition or better factory loaded rounds just to see if you can be more accurate?

  • @crazyinsane105 When i shot this 600 meter range i was on a hilltop behind a house under construction i received permission from the owner to fire from. He has since finished his house so and another house next to his is in the way of my shot to my range so i cant make 600 meter shots anymore without asking the guy to open a few of his windows so i can shoot through them, i dont think he would like that to much. My range is only 450 meters max.

  • @crazyinsane105 I am currently searching for a range that is out to 1000 - 1500 meters as i am in the market to purchase a .50 BMG soon but unfortunately ranges around here go out to 300 max in most cases. I have yet to find one to allow 600 meter shots. When i find a range out to 600 meters i will make a new vid and i have already replaced the scope with a 4-12x varibale power which i have tested and it works great!

  • @sgtking11b Google Manatee Gun Club in Myakka City (outside Tampa) if you live in Florida.

  • @dobravery That is way to long of a drive for a 600 meter range. I can hit locations in AL and GA since i'm in the panhandle for 1000 meter ranges if i want to drive 4-5 hours.

  • @crazyinsane105 As for hand loads, this is a combat rifle, i will keep it that way and show everyone just what kind of accuracy you can get out of a stock rifle with surplus or com ammo. You dont have to spend 2.00 a round to get damn good accuracy out of these rifles. I may hand load around 5 rounds just for shits and giggles as i already have a progressive press and some boxer brass for the x54r. I just need the die set. This is something that will come in the future though.

  • @sgtking11b I don't have the technical skills (or time) to do what you did (absolutely outstanding video) but I can attest to the fact that the PSL does just as well out to 600 yards with surplus ammo. The difference between my handloads and surplus ammo was less than a MOA (approximately 1 MOA with handloads/match and 1.1 MOA with Russian surplus). My decision is the same as yours, I'm not going to bother with handloads when surplus does just fine hitting the 10 inch gong at 600 yards.

  • wow, i had no idea the grouping is that impressive at 600 meters which is over 1800 feet, some of my buddies said don't waste your money on the PSL, but after seeing this I want one lol i also read that its safer to shoot the grain of around 140something and not heavier grain, is there a reason for that

    thanks for the video

  • @falafel1860 anything under 155gr is usually light ball ammo which is what the PSL is designed for Anything over is Heavy ball which will destroy your rifle over a short period of time and could cause very deadly failure rates.

  • @sgtking11b thank you so much, that helps a lot, i saw one today but it seems the scope had what i call an expired illuminated radioactive that illuminates the reticles and to get a good Russian scope is pretty expensive, unless i have not shopped enough, what do you suggest?

  • @falafel1860 All the PSO-1 scopes that come with the PSLs are going to have the expired tritium reticules. Unless you buy the scope new they are never going to glow.

  • At 600M @ 6 inches is still like 1.25 MOA if you take the distance into account, if 1 MOA is 1 inch @ 100 yards...... your 6 inches @ about 650 yards. And on top of that with a 4x scope! Your as calm as a hindu cow! Great shooting!

  • Just to clarify (sgtking11b did in a response), the use of MOA in the video/description is wrong. 1MOA is 1" about 100 yards,1 MOA is about 6" at 600 yards, so when the video says 6 MOA at 600 yards, and the description says 5.8 MOA, that is incorrect. He means 1 MOA at 600 yards, that is very very good for this rifle.

  • I just got mine, and I'm shooting about 3 MOA on a good day, with keeping the barrel cool. I've tried Russian Silver tip, Bulgarian surplus, and Wolf Gold. The Bulgarian seems to be the best so far and I'm about to buy a couple tins of it. What do you recomend for a trigger job? The pull is long, stiff, and gritty, and I think that may be where some of my issues are.

  • @mustangduckk There are several things you can do. Because the PSL is the same design and most parts of the AK you can use any aftermarket AK trigger group in the PSL including the adjustable AK trigger from redstararms. I have one of these adjustable triggers in both my AK and PSL i love them. This vid was witht he stock trigger though. If you dont want to buy a new one, some fine grit sand paper and polishing the trigger contact points to the hammer will be your best and cheapest method.

  • Hey Sarge could you break it down for an army medic? what is MOA? how does that work? im ashamed to say it but i know jack about scopes and i really would like to get into it...

  • @jonathanMallard I use the term MOA loosely or as most anal people perfer "wrong". MOA by defenition is means "Minute of Angle" and without getting to technical (would run out of space here) MOA is a group size in inches shot at 100 yard. While a shot group of 6" at 600 meters is 1 inch at 100 = 1 MOA as i said i use the term MOA loosely. If you want more info on tech details of MOA send me a PM.

  • @sgtking11b

Thank god. I thought you actually believed a 6'' group at 600 meters was 6 moa.

  • @KommandoOver9000 No not at all. I used MOA very loosely in these videos as most people do not understand what MOA really is. Rather than confusing people, i just use this term. Although seems i have sparked a infestation of people messaging correcting me on useage of MOA here. I suppose i should have just said "6 inches at 600 meters" to keep the flamers down. HAHA oh well.

  • The only thing keeping me from gettin one of these is I can't use my stash of 200gr sp ammo I have and I won't buy a weapon I can't hunt with...maybe I could use the surplus fmj on hogs for head shots?

  • @KrigareavGud That is about the only downfall of the PSL. Can not shoot heavy ball ammo however a Mosin Nagant can. Even the true SVD it is not recommended to use heavy ball, even though it can take the beating. If you want to hunt with the PSL you can pick up some Prvi Partizan softpoint light ball ammo or reload 100 shells. Thats what i do. If you need over 100 rounds for hunting... well something is just wrong.

  • If you were to average all the shots, you're getting considerably better than 6 MOA. That last shot looks like a flyer, it should probably be discounted considering the grouping of the other rounds. Damn fine shooting with any rifle at that range. Better than I could do.

  • this is impressive. i will believe it when i see it though (mine is on order)

I hope I get a ''good'' one , I have heard some PSL's are not up to par with others. You obviously have a good one!

  • @24pipewrench Never heard any bad replies back from anyone who purchased these rifles from my vids. They have always replied with great response on accuracy as i listed in my videos. If you do have an issue with accuracy (should be around 1.5 MOA) try high grade ammo to check the true accuracy otherwise if it is no the ammo i have to tricks you can perform on your rifle to help with accuracy. Just let me know.

  • thanks, im looking forward to playing with mine, i bought some wolf 150 grain to try, since its non corrosive. depending on how that goes, i might try to find some 7n1 or wolf gold. i guess ill just experiment and see what works best for my rifle.

  • @24pipewrench best way to do it. These rifles seem to differ from one to another one what ammo works best for it as most rifles do.

  • A piece of advice: check up for the original "I. M. CUGIR" (triangle with arrow ) Romanian manufacturer marking.

Here in Romania it is completely illegal to have one, but i did my army training with one of them (second series, 1979), and i did a 2 inch / 300 metres grouping , with 5 rounds (Romanian short series scope IOR mounted on).

  • @rayflorin Oh i have looked into them indepth on which i would like to purchase. CUGAR models are hard to find and normally run 1000.00 which is one of the ones i have already. The TN builds here put together here in the states and seem to be on par with the CUGAR. The original Military I.M. Cugars are very rare here in the states and cost as much as a Tigr SVD or more. Collectors value mostly.

  • @sgtking11b While in army, I really enjoyed my PSL (1982-1983), I honestly say: you can trust her

    with your life.

  • @rayflorin I have no doubt in that. She is extremely reliable. I only had one issue of jamming with one type of ammo in the Cugar build. After about 400 rounds the jamming issue has almost completely stopped (maybe 1 out of 200 rounds and decreaseing the more i use that ammo). Simple brake in for that ammo.

  • @rayflorin Buna Ziua !

Hay over in Romanian I am totally surprised you can't have these guns in Romanian because over here in Chisinau Moldova the main gun shops sells these guns like Moldavian wines in markets meaning their easy to sell and easy to buy No problem getting one !

With some humor how many you want Unu, doi maybe Sasa ?, one for everyone in the family ?

Lets each buy one and help our country's solve the Awful stray dog problem we have !

OK the best to you !

  • 6 inches at 600 yards, 1 moa. Not bad man, not bad at all. Can it shoot heavier rounds safely?

  • Yes bad use of the term MOA on my part. I have installed a adjustable gas block and they say you can use heavy ball in it but i dont trust it because you are still increaseing the barrel preasure and since the firingpins are not correctly set of every rifle you could end up blowing the primer clean out of the back and breaking your firingpin or blowing it out of the bolt from over preasure so i do not trust shooting anything other than Lightball designed for the rifle.

  • @sgtking11b Cool. You've got one hell of a rifle. Too bad they're illegal here in Canada. Thanks for the videos!

  • nice

  • Sgt you make great informative videos and are to be commended. You cut through the it goes bang bullshit and give us real downrange results in a clear and concise manner. Keep up the good work. I look forward to more tests. Thanks

  • I will be performing more tests soon once i acquire some modificaiton parts for the PSL. So far i have the adjustable gasblocks in. I will be ordering a new composit stock set and will be accurazing it by freefloating the barrel, adjustable trigger, extended mag catch, 1p21 scope and lastly a muzzle break. Once everything is in and installed i will take more vids of various ranges and compair them to the unmodded PSL.

  • I'm getting the exact same results with Bulgarian light ball ammo in my PSL. I didn't have too high of hopes with the rifle, especially with surplus ammo, but it has been very accurate!

  • 5.8 MOA @ 600 meters equals somebody or something is fucked. Finally some actual honest proof instead of "its not as good as my AR" type of review...thank you for numbers and not opinions...btw--- have you ever said "Meticulous attention to detail, D.I.C.K." while at work? ...ive got twenty bucks riding on it...

  • You may have stated it some where, but what off-the-shelf ammunition have you found to be the most accurate? Also, what is the difference in moa between wolf and whatever you consider to be the best? Btw, thanks for the video. I have an AK (wasr), and was debating trying to pick up a psl. Now I'm definitely in the market.

  • Bulgarian surplus light ball steel core seems to be the most accurate out of the box at the cheapest cost. Both of my PSLs are hitting 1.2 and 1.3 MOA with the Bulgarian light ball steel core surplus ammo. I have not tested the Wolf Gold yet as many have spoken about but i did pick some up for testing later this month or next. Silvertip isnt as good as people claim my rifles were hitting 6 MOA with that crap. Be careful on western ammo anything over 150gr stay away , it will destory your rifle

  • That's a lot better than what I heard r3 was capable of, any attempts with a 6x done?

  • Not as of yet. I installed a centerbore mount with a 6-24x50mm scope however the center boremount places the scope way to far back for good eye relief in the prone. The scope can not be moved forward anymore on the rail of the mount and the mount can not move forward over the rail. I will be either modifiying the scope or replacing it with a telescoping stock from either an AK or one designed for the PSL. Once this is done i will take more videos of shots at various ranges on x10.

  • By surplus ammunition do you mean 7N1, or the cheap surplus? My PSL and Tigr love wolf ammunition, and 7n1 if I can ever find it. That grouping with anything other than 7n1 or wolf(or the equal) is truely amazing.

  • By surplus i mean Bulgarian Steel core cheap plinker ammo. NOT 7n1. This is just the standard cheap bulgarian light ball you can pick up for about .19-.20 a round no adays. with 7N1 i am getting sub MOA easy from both PSL rifles.

  • that is amazing. I havent gotten to do much testing with 7N1, just 5 rounds i got from a friend. But wolf gets me sub-moa, while any surplus steel core like bulgarian will get me 1-2 moa, or 3 at the worst.

  • Interesting that the wolf gets you sub MOA. Anytime i have used wolf with any kind of firearm i have had issues of failures to fire or just crappy accuracy in general.

  • wolf gold is high quality, its the same as the serbian privi partisan stuff. the steel case wolf 149 grain is better than any surplus too. I was surpized too, because all other wolf steel case is dirty and crappy. But it is cleaner than all surplus ive shot, and more accurate(excluding 7N1). wolf gold is the tops of what you can buy though in 150 grain.

  • I was unaware of that. I figured all the wolf was pretty much the same. Every steel case like you i have shot has been crap. I will have to try some out against the bulgarian surplus. Thanks for that info!.

  • Yes wolf really did well this time with steel case ammo(only with 7.62x54R), it doesnt even stink like the rest of their stuff. But if you are going for accuracy, go for wolf gold. Its bearly more accurate, but you get the brass if you want to reload or whatever. Im about to buy some wolf gold, pull the bullet, put in a seirra match one with a new correct load of powder. I cant wait to see what that does, the first match PSL round, haha.

  • what kind of groups you get with the wolf gold? I get about 2". I get 4" with czech light ball.

  • I have not had a chance to put wolf gold through it yet.

  • With wolf gold, I get sub moa to MOA tested at 100, 200, 300 yards. With handloads its sub moa groups tested at 100, 300 yards, then moa groups at 500 yards, and I hit 7/10 shots at 800 yards on a 12 inch gong.

  • Alot of people have asked me about the Wolf gold so i picked up a box. I have not tested the accuracy against the PSL but i will soon enough. I have some Russian, 7N1, Bulgarian, Silvertip, Prvi Partizan (Wolf Gold) and hand loads (made by myself) that i will be testing. So far my testing indicates the silvertip is 6 MOA out of both rifles, Russian about 3 MOA, Bulgarian 1.5 MOA and handloads Sub MOA. I have yet to test the prvi/wolf

  • I didn't know silvertip was that innacurate, I've never shot any corrosive stuff other than 7n1. Did you even the powderloads on all the ammo you tested? Also, what do you do for handloads(ie, what bullet?)?

  • Silvertip is very innaccurate in the PSLs i have for some reason. Others have good luck with it but both of mine hate it. As for evening the load, no that would alter the ammo and in turn not allow for proper out of box testing for ammo. The purpose of my accuracy tests for ammo is to find the most accurate and consistant out of the box ammo compaired to hand loads. For my hand loads I molded my own bullets. 155gr .312 diam with gascheck. 5% tin and 5% ant. added to the lead, Win760 58.1 gr chrg

  • That is very good groups for straight out of the box, the improvements with fixing powder loads is worth it. But nothing beats handloads. Thats really interesting that you mold your own bullets, you must be a experienced reloader. I use wolf gold brass, with 174 grain seirra .311 matchkings, and 48 grains of 4895 powder.

  • Yes balancing the powder would greatly help consistancy for each round which results in accuracy however the point is to find a round that is out of box consistant in the surplus field that is cheap. A balance between cheap and accurate rounds and that so far has been the Bulgarian lightball steel core mild AP round for me. As for being an experienced reloader to mold bullets, not at all just have to know what your doing. Its all about attention to detail.

  • Im in need for a mild steel core round as well. I am planning of pulling steel core bullets and loading them into wolf poly brass, so it isnt corrosive but still AP accurate ammo. Which bullet(just the bullet) would you reccomend for my round out of all the surplus?

  • Well the AK-47 fires the .312 diameter bullet not a .308 as most people think. So you want to shoot a round that is the same as a 7.62x54r which are also .312 diameter and they are more stable in flight. A great cheap round to pull bullets from that has mild steel core you want to go with bulgarian light ball 7.62x54r and you can reuse the powder as well. They cost about .18 a round or so now.

  • Thanks for the info, I will try the bulgarian and silvertip(i have a few of those on hand). I'd rather not reuse the powder, new powder is pretty cheap. Also, mostly every PSL barrel slugs out for a .311 bullet, all 4 PSL's ive slugged out were .311 or .310. I don't think a .312 bullet would do damage though.

  • A .312 will not do damage. If you measure the surplus ammo it is all .311-.313. The copper/brass jacket conforms and molds around the lands/grooves for a good seal this is what bullets are designed to do.

  • Ya I didn't think .312 would do damage. Hey but have you ever had a PSL where the scope didn't mount on straight? Like I picked up a PSL off gunbroker to do some tesitng on it with gas pressures, and the when I put a kalinka 6x24 scope on it it mounts 3 degrees counterclockwise, like the reticle is rotated because poor mount. Any help?

  • Yes each PSL has a different side mount. Some can be off a bit and that matters down range. This is why even the scopes are serialed to the rifle. What you will have to do is shim and/or grind the scope mount to line it up correctly. Watch out for rifles on gunbroker some of those PSLs are kit builds and are not made worth a damn out of old burned out demilled military kits that were suppose to be sold for parts, not to be made into a functional rifle again.

  • Eh it doesn't really matter. I am just firing a lot of heavy ball ammo/torture testing the rifle until it fails/or I see damage in the firearm too see what gas pressures we are dealing with. Of course all testing done safely from a gun mount. I think the scope mount/scope needs grinding because the tooth on the scope mount when screwed in hits the rail and an improper angle causing the twist of the whole scope. Thanks for the tip.

  • Anytime. I have just picked up the new DEZ adjustable gasblocks for the PSLs and for two of my AKs. They are very heavy but look to be well made and should do the trick for allowing me to use heavyball without failures or saftey issues. You should check into them they are selling on gunbroker now for 79.00 even.

  • That is really good. Exactly what the rifle was meant to do.

  • have you tried wolf ammo in it? It shoots way better in my PSL. I get about 1-2 MOA with it. My Tigr draugnov gets the same. But the PSL's groups open up with semi auto fire, while my tigr's dont. But the tigr costs like 3 times as much, and does the same thing, but with $100 magazines. also build quality is better on the tigr, but for the price :(

  • A tigr is a true SVD civi or hunting version. Just a chopped down barrel and removed muzzle flash supressor. Yes that is going to have a better build quality than the PSL. The svd/tigrs have milled receivers, thicker barrel and a short stroke piston system, they are two completely different rifles. Compairing a SVD/tigr to a PSL is like compairing a apple to a orange. They are completely two different weapon systems. No i have not tested with wolf yet.

  • Wow, 5.8 MOA at 600 yards is pretty damn good for a fairly cheap rifle, and that last one was a flyer so you can probably get even better. Question though, how long were you waiting in between shots? I hear the thin barrels are good for accurate cold-bore shots but heat up very quickly.

I wonder if we will ever see any SVDS variants stateside. It's got a slightly shorter but thicker barrel.

  • My shot time between each shot was maybe 4-5 seconds at most. I tested quick fire with only a 1-2 second cool down between shots each time. I found that quick fires only increase my group by about 1/4" inch at 100 meters. Unless you burn through 100 rounds i doubt your group will spread more than 1/2" at 100 meters. I say this because in my tests i ran through 50 rounds quick fire then waited 2 hours dumped cold water on the barrel put another 50 rounds slowly into the target.

  • lol thats something right there !!

  • so tempted to get one of these over a fn fal...but I hear scary stories about canted front sights or magazines that don't feed well...

  • I have no problems with mag feeding at all. Unless they figured out how to incorrectly load these mags or they are rusted to hell you shouldnt have an issue. Canted front sights yes one of my rifles has that issue but the iron sights are dead on. Do remember you only use the front sights on this rifle for snap shots at close ranges when you dont have time to aim with the scope. My canted sight is accurate to 500 meters which is well more than enough.

  • 1MOA rifle for $600? and in a respectable caliber? WOW. Talk about a good deal.

  • Would you guys trust buying one of these online?

Aim surplus has them for 600, but im not sure what condition its going to be in when i get it....

  • Both of my purchases were made online. One was from gunbroker the other from centerfiresystems. If AIM has one for 600.00 i would jump on that deal before its to late. Buying one from gunbroker is a risk but from AIM, Centerfire, SOG, Classicarms or other reputable companies the risk is so slim there is little to nothing to worry with. Plus the companies will make it right with you if something is wrong to preserve their reputation and good standing. Good ol customer service.

  • They are sold out now.. i waited too long. FUK!

  • Check centerfiresystems and classicarms they usually have them for a great price as well.

  • I just checked, yes , very good price. Thanks for the tip! I went to the local gun shop today, they had them for $995.00. :(

  • centerfiresystems has them for 450.00 without a scope and only 1 mag. GREAT deal! Get one while they have them at such a low cost!

  • You know a lot more than I do about shooting. I am considering getting a Romak PSL so I have a modern "mostly precise" shooter. Right now I only shoot iron-sight guns from the 40's and they are very tough to learn with.

  • These rifles will be right you your ally. On paper they list these rifles as 1.5" MOA and i can say yes as im getting 1.2-1.3 MOA one of my rifles shoots 1.2 the other 1.3 easy. With high grade ammo, SUB MOA all day long easy. The iron sights on this rifle are exactly the same as the AK-47 so your looking at 2"-3" MOA at best with such a crude sight picture. You do not use the iron sights unless your getting up close and personal for a quick snap shot. Otherwise use the scope.

  • I'd like to know if you shot hot or cold

  • Due to the thin barrels on these rifles it only takes 1-2 rounds to pull the barrel out of cold. At the end i was shooting at Hot bore. I tested the rifle with cold bore and the impacts are low and to the left by about half an inch and make 1.5 group as the barrel is headed up in the 3 round.

  • if that was a human body you were shooting at, almost all of those would be head shots (if you were aiming at head when firing). good shooting man.

  • so how accurate have you got your psl? tried the prvi partisan 150 grain (wolf gold) in it? I just ordered on and would love to be able to hit 5 gallon buckets at 1000 meters if that is possible. Great vids!!!

  • i have not tried the wolf gold but Prvi Partizan makes great yugo x39 rounds and if the x54r is as accurate then the psl will have little issues touching buckets at 1000m. I can say i have pushed through some Winchester Softpoint hunting rounds and easily pulled a 1/2 inch MOA group the first 3 shot group but the ammo was costly so i have shot anymore through it. I did pick up some generic Prvi Partizan ammo not marked with Wolf Gold. I have yet to test the groups on that ammo.

  • Great video! I am selling a Tikka 300 WSM because the ammo cost is through the roof and hard to find. Would a 4-12 american made scope work well with one of these, or should I stick with russian optics... retical is designed for the round In a russian scope I believe? The Tikka gets under 1/2" MOA... but I dont have a use past 300 or 400 yards, so no real loss to me :)

  • Yeah the 300 win mags are costly rounds, hell even 7.62X39mm ammo is through the roof. As for using a western style mil-dot scope on this rifle. Yes it is possible, i am using a 8-24x50mm on both of mine. The key is to pick up a weavers style side mounting bracket that centers the scope over the bore of the rifle so you do not have to comp. for being 1.5" off to the side as the current russians scopes are calibrated for.

  • The center bore side mount brackets are anywhere from 30.00-60.00 depending the brand and style. Also take note if your scope is long like mine are, the stock will be to short to use and get the proper eye relief when shooting from the bench or prone without a 2-4 inch gap. You will need to put a buffer or something to fill in the gap. Or replace the stock as it will take AK style stocks with minor modifications to fit.

  • what sort of bullet drop those the 7.62x54R have at this range?

  • Around 82.8" give or take .3" if zeroed at 100 meters, bullet speed was 1576FPS -/+ 3FPS, retained kinetic energy was 710 ft lbs -/+ 4 ft lbs.

  • really only 1576? I thought these rounds were comparable to .308's. Still enough energy retained.

  • It all depends on the round for the .308. Powder charge, weight of the round etc. If you take a .308 of the same grain and powder charge it is actually faster by about 300FPS. If you compair to to a .308 of heavier grain and powder charge it is slower because then your looking at falling into a heavy ball x54r which then would be compairable to the .308. This round is a light ball 147gr.

  • very good info.

  • Nice grup , rifle shot close 1 MOA with not mach grada ammo, is very good grup !!!

  • you can search Kalinka optics wharehouse (Mispelled?) they have original scopes and accessories i.e. mounts siderails for mounts etc. I also wanted to mention that I had a huge amount of Russian SVD fans put this weapon down but... I had an SVD and the head space was screwed up from get go and was gonna cost me darn near what I paid for it so i sold it and got me one of these. I killed a doe running at 643 yards! Dropped it where I hit her! SO you SVD critics eat that! This gun is awesome !

  • Yes Kalinka is a great site to get the originals but kinda pricey on shipping and long shipping times on top of that but still a good site. I picked up a few rails and scopes from them before.

  • Most die hard SVD owners/critics are mad because they spent 3,000.00 + on their SVD and the PSL matches the accuracy or even some reports indicate out performs the SVD when the PSLs only cost 700.00-1200.00. On top of that so many people call the PSL a SVD clone. Rightfully so they get up set over the misunderstanding of the PSL being deemed the cloned SVD however that doesnt mean the PSL is any less of a rifle. Happy to see someone else running the PSL reporting back who has also shot an SVD.

  • damn fine weapon.

  • Very impressive! Though 6" at 600meters is roughly 1MOA, isn't it? How much did you pay for yours, and what modifications have you done to it?
