I have a 40gb and I never had problems with it. If you ever need more memory, it's easy to replace. But if you check on Amazon, I think the 40gb has some of the best reviews because they also added some kind of energy saving feature and it is also more quiet.

There's no worry of mine breaking, and purely because It's so easy to upgrade them to CFW, I was able to install a few updates made by my company. The 1000 was a solid brick and I've had mine for roughly 5 years now with no problems whatsoever. From what I've heard though, both the increase in temperature and speed increase are hardly noticable, so you might as well save yourself the money and buy a slightly cheaper 5.4k RPM one. Still, if you use the PS3 to watch movies and play music, find yourself a cheap 500GB laptop HDD. Replace old one with new one, format through wizard, done! =)
