I dont think that the tank is still a decisive weapon against infantry in the 21'st century man.Planes tend to be more and more decisive in a war but as in ww2 and Vietnam you cant defeat an enemy completely by bombing.

Many thought that tanks were absolete in the 60s but they are still a highly effective tools and the U.S. Military is planning on using M1s til atleast 2020 the LV 100-5 which is cooler,quiter and will cut maintance cost by 50% and I'm sure they will upgrade its gun to the L-55 and upgrade everything else on it

Well tanks are fascinating indeed, but pure caterpillar driven tanks are dying out,

there are no huge tankwars anymore, nor

they will be

anti-tank missiles, mines, op/maint. costs

especially the m1 with it's turbo-engine

has a rather limited autonomous range, before

running out of fuel, the exhaust is especially

a target for heat seekers

but these tanks are held in service for only one reason "fear" making an impression on

the enemey mind.

I disagree. Armor forces, especially armored cavalry, played a very important role in Vietnam. When the enemy primarily consists of infantry-based insurgents tanks can be tremendously effective tools.

The M1s lack of range has been proven to be a red herring. Either it's getting resupplied every 10 hours in sustained combat or it's not operating far enough from FOBs to matter.

And I'm still LOLing at "heat-seeking" antitank missles.

One time use does mean that warfare is going to change or should. Warfare of the future will involve battles between state forces and non-state entities. The non-state entities will find acquiring high-technology devices difficult to acquire and even more difficult to use.

@Enrage13 Warfare is always changing. In insurgency warfare one simply avoids the enemy's strong points and attacks his weaknesses-and everyone has those, no matter how powerful. As for high-tech devices, many can be locally-built and deployed. Any model plane buff could build and deploy drone aircraft, for instance. I expect those to produce air parity in most wars fought in the future.

A. There is no need to lecture me on insurgency warfare, especially something so basic. It's almost insulting.

B. The weakness of high-tech devices is not other high tech devices. A real insurgency isn't going to go after UAVs with locally produced UAVs, that's conventional symmetrical warfare and it's a stupid idea for the side with the poor technology. An insurgent will try and take out the operators sitting in a building with a $20 ex-Russian mortar.
