  • Very epic guitar playing!

  • The DVD is a transfer from the original 1980s VHS, In it he shows us the techniques he uses, how to perform them, including his signature volume "yank", attempts to emulate some of his heroes such as Pat Metheny. He even challenges himself with one of his own solos. The top song 'soup to nuts' is "Amazing Grace" where he improvs. (not like MATM). He is an excellent teacher and uses a great deal of self effacing humor. Get it and learn from the best axe player I've ever witnessed.

  • I LOVE this song! I love it! Thank you Jesus Christ for Phil Keaggy and his tremendous gift!

  • There is joy in Heaven every time Phil picks up a guitar

  • nice guitar solo

  • Beyond beautiful

  • I've been listening to Phil Kaeggy for 23 years --- and his music NEVER gets old. This is my 2nd favorite song by him (the 1st is "The Wind and the Wheat.") Thank you for posting. :)

  • This song refers to Hebrews 12 vs 1. When I first heared this as now I was totally amazed. It is appropiate for our day and time. Even though it is an Instrumental!

  • THis is soooo goood. in the 21st century people don't make music with that quality anymore

  • He's no guitarist. He's an artist. He just paints with a guitar instead of a brush.

  • Clearly the best album If ever heard by Phil Keaggy was "Wind and the Wheat".

Every song a masterpiece, and clearly inspired by God Almighty himself.

Thank you to who ever posted this video.

  • You can see the joy in his face:)

  • I hope someday that the music Phil Keaggy has recorded with Jon Anderson of YES will be released. What a combination

  • His beautiful majestic tone, masterful use of tremolo bar, and pinky volume swells, just bring me to tears. There's just something about this song that gets to me, especially from 2:30-on.

  • True genius in action! And a real nice guy too.

  • Jimmi Hendrix, when asked, How does it feel to be the greatest guitarist who ever lived, He said, "I don't know, Go ask Phil Keaggy!"

  • @RudeAwakning

haha...can you quote the source of this urban legend? Phil can't!

  • @caseyspaos It was in Teen Beat magazine, years ago around early 70's, but it was about 2 years after Jimi Hendrix died. That would put it around 1973, I think! The magazine said that Jimi Hendrix claimed it live on TV on the tonight show.

  • @caseyspaos Or it might have been Tiger Beat, I used to get that one too.

  • @RadioFreeBabylon The magazine got it wrong and started this rumor? At least it's a good rumor and not a derogatory one. Praise God! That rumor misquotation may have brought some to hear Phil play, that might never listened otherwise. It may have even led some to the Lord!

  • this song inspired me to buy an electric guitar

  • If I could play an electric guitar like Phil can, I'd make her scream every night!!!!

  • I remember reading a magazine article years back where Phil said that in the studio recording this solo he was literally moved to tears as he played (he said it was one of the spontaneous/electrifying moments that performers can have) and listening to it today, having heard it literally hundreds of times before, I still get goosebumps and if I close my eyes I can almost feel the joy well up in me. Especially during the peels of the bridge. This is what I imagine the universe sounds like to God.

  • He is one of the only guitarists that knows how to truly play both electrically and acoustically. Plus the guy is an amazing singer as well. Everything me and many others aspire to, but only through Christ can we accomplish such beauty as this. XD

  • Just gorgeous! What a feel for melody!

  • WOW! I love this composition!!! It inspires!

  • OMG!

One of the greatest guitar solos EVER!

  • I usually say epic when I like something and its true that I love this piece but this one is the very definition of epic it sounds epic

  • My favorite instrumental by the master, of all time! It brings tears of joy to my eyes, too. You should read the liner notes on the cd, how Alex Acuna, Phil's percussionist on this album was thrilled to play this song. It brought tears to his eyes too.

  • this is how I remember him in concert beginning in 1970's and he gets going and plays eyes closed, never needs to look at the fretboard. Amazing my idol since then.

  • how did this turn into an argument about darwinism? for goodness' sake, just enjoy the music.

  • OldNewsflash: Darwin received Jesus Christ as his Savior & Lord prior to his march beyond the clouds. Read it among many life after death experiences in Cardiologist, Dr. Maurice S. Rawlings' book, To Hell And Back. May as well get acquainted w/The Big Banger Himself and dive right into the Holy Bible. Read aloud the gospel of John (Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God). Your eyeballs may see things in a new way. Listen to Phil's "Let Everything Else Go". LOVE&PEACE2ALLin2010!

  • The old lie that the church keeps dragging out, that Darwin somehow repented right before his death. The guy shouldn't have to put a tape recorder next to his bed to stop these foolish myths from cropping up. Darwin, though not anti-theistic, was by his own word an atheist. Again, proof is all that is ever asked of believers, and it's never presented. I can claim that christ stuck a marble in his butt once, but it's an empty claim without PROOF.

  • @sicklesickle i would just like to say, that about 23 yrs ago, that i was a drug addict and full of hate.i asked JESUS into my heart and to save me.i no longer am full of hate and have not touched drugs since then.so can you please explain to me that if JESUS doesn't exist, then how did he hear me?

  • @sticksofthunder68 That sounds like you had a personal experience of radical change. PERSONAL meaning it was all YOU, buddy. Again, unless you bring forth proof that it was anything other than personal growth and development, there's no reason to believe an outside source was the cause. Why would you? You made a decision to stop smoking/cheating/cussing/shooting up, or any number of things, and your life is better. YOU did that, nobody else. Take responsibility, it makes life so much simpler.

  • Keaggy is truly, as Guitar Player magazine once said of him a "world class guitarist".

A true master of the instrument as well as playing under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

His note choices just seem to grab you in the guts and make you feel alive --- or wish you were.

  • 1:58 to about 2:58 is so full of emotion it brings tears to my eyes!

  • I just get sick of hearing how talent is "proof" of god. It doesn't prove anything at all. It's like saying, "Hey that chef is so talented, that's proof that god exists." It's a massive leap from something totally unrelated. Keaggy is unbelievably talented, but that premise doesn't lead to god existing.

  • Atheist needs to believe in at least two supernatural events. First is you can not present me scientific evidence of something that came into existence with out someone causing that existence. Big bang shows the existence of our universe, does it magically come from nothing?

Second, you can not produce a living cell from inorganic substance. Again something doesn't come from nothing.

Before you ask any questions, answer my questions of how these two events happened without God.

  • I understand. As an avid believer I would never say that seriously, but would use it freely out of context. Almost like when a child gets what he wants for Christmas and says, "You're the best dad ever!". That Dad is certainly not the best ever, that's a massive leap too. I think Phil's guitar playing is so profound it would have to be described under something as other-worldy as "proof that God exists" Ya dig?

  • I understand the words you are saying, but your argument is as irrational as ever.

  • Oh hey hey hey now, who's arguing? Not for me pal. I was letting you know how I would dissect a statement like that: a throwaway exaggeration that's more a sign of immaturity than unintelligence. I'm unfamiliar with the context it was used in and don't care to look but was just playing devils advocate ;-) (no pun intended)

  • TairyGreen89, please control yourself

  • One of the best Guitarist ever!!!!!!!!! Phil Keaggy praising our Creator through his awesome music; thanks Bro. keep it up for Jesus!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I remember when I got this LP. Allan Holdsworth-like tones, but more 'easliy accessible' melodies (not to take anything away from Allan, who I regard as a genius of a guitar player.)

This is some of my favorite Keaggy material.

  • The logic is a no-brainer. Evolution in terms of: Variation, mutation, gene flow, natural selection, genetic drifts, and adaptation do not claim complexity is a result of evolution. To look at humans screams design. Plus how do you explain that Darwin said it was impossible for the human eye to be a result of evolution? Look around you, design is evident and makes much more sense then "big bang" or so called macro evolution.

  • Actually Darwin never said that it was impossible for the human eye or any other eye to evolve. Human eyes aren't any more complex than ape or dog or cat eyes. They are all products of evolution, maybe you should do some research before you start putting words in Darwin's mouth. Darwin was a staunch atheist and never doubted evolution at all.

  • Actually Darwin did. Read Origins of Species Chapter 6. He attacks his own research and suppositions. Maybe you should do some research before you start claiming Darwin didn't say something he did. Macro evolution isn't something proved by science and is a debate in the scientific community. That's a fact.

  • Darwin never said it was impossible, he just said he didn't understand it. However, now we do understand the process of how eyes evolved and I'm sure if Darwin were alive today he would accept it.

  • Wrong, read my last post.

  • The new film"CREATION" is coming out soon! Darwin claimed before he died that he was wrong for believing such a lie!The lie that he created himself!

  • Explain your logic on how him being a talented guitarist is a sign that God exists. I could say the exact opposite and it would make as much sense as your argument. NONE!

  • Information - where does it come from?

Language - transmits information - whether it's chromatic scale, english alphabet or dna code (a 4 letter highly efficient and well organized language) all carrying information or a message.

Messages must come from something -where does information "start". As it hasn't always existed - it had to have had a "starter" in this case and all cases for that matter the "starter" is the Start... in the beginning God!

  • I can't fit everything into one comment TairyGreen89, so I will use a couple of comment boxes instead. Hi. it is hard to describe the unique experience of love that fills a Christian when they have faith. I don't think you are a bad person for your disbelief and I don't want to lecture you. I just know that what I feel for my God is real for ME. It has nothing to do with a song, or some musician.

  • I wish you all the best, and I hope you were not offended that I broke into your conversation with jbear2001. Maybe someday you can experience the joy for yourself, but I wont discount you as an intelligent being because of it, or call you names. You are who you are and the same goes for me. Remember. You can't see touch or see oxygen, but you know it's there because without it there would be no life.

  • Human beings knew that air was there before those powerful microscopes because they could feel it as it filled them. That's sort of how it is when you feel the presence of God in your heart, you just know that it is there. Anyway, have a great day TairyGreen89.

  • TairyGreen89 is true. And it takes split-second discernment, as well. First lightning, then thunder, then rain. You get inundated. And then everything goes back to calm. Some things suddenly become so

    clear.

  • "Wow, you are fucking retarded."

There's no need to be so rude, TairyGreen89.

  • Phil's talent is one of the many signs that God is real. If you don't believe, keep listening to his music and lyrics and see what happens. ;-)

  • I'd rather turn the other cheek.

  • I'm an Atheist and could care less about Phil's faith. He is one of the greatest guitarists in the world. The Wind and the Wheat is an incredible work of art.

  • Take a look at "fragile forest" and "The Reunion", both are from Phil Keaggy and are as good as "The Wind and the Wheat" in my opinion.

It is true that this melody "The Wind and the Wheat" got something really special in it !

Always a pleasure for me to listen to Phil Keaggy's music, and I will be honest with you, it is a huge advantage for me that he is christian, because it gives me the proof that he seek the best in him, the best in life.

Hope you will experience the mystery of God one day

  • Master and the Musician trumps Wind and the Wheat significantly. I've listened to both albums so many times.

Wind and the Wheat approaches 'elevator music' on a few tracks.

Master and the Musician is musical commune with God.

  • You know of course, when you say that you could care less, that you are saying that you really do care.

The correct saying is, "I couldn't care less".

So it is good to hear that you care about Phil's faith. Maybe that's your first step. I pray you take more.

  • Dont waste too much time searching for the Truth....If Christ wasnt who he claimed to be your cool...but if he truely was the Son of God,you my friend will have to answer to the King one day,its a gamble I wouldnt want to take!!!!-Respectfully said-Paraglidermx

  • why on earth haven't i heard of this guy before ? this is music that touches my heart !

  • Man i never saw somone use volume control like that 5 stars fur sure!!!

  • That is signature Phil. Watch some of the vids with Glass Harp. You see even more of it.

  • Yea alot of people don't realize how he uses knobs to get his effects, he is the guitar master!

  • The feel in Phil's playing is transcendent, and blows away shred maniacs like Yngwie on any day. Christian music could be taken to high qualitative levels, but is sadly left in the realm of mediocrity just because it is Christian and people buy it nevertheless. Long live Phil!!!!

  • One of my favorite CD's (or tapes) of all time in 'Wind and the Wheat'. Amazing stuff....

  • This song send shivers down and up the spine! It's incredible, amazing. You can really sense all the feeling he has put in this song...all the clouds marching slowly...Wind and the Wheat album is simply incredible!

  • Phil's playing is otherworldly.

  • This gives me goosebumbs. Keaggy's SO inspired/creative and HOT! Been his fan since '75; SO thoroughly enjoying this GREAT musician. An anthem of beauty, this song is!!

  • Carlos Santana is not in the same league as Eric Johnson or Phil Keaggy. Santana is way overrated as a player. He wasn't even the best player in his own band, Neal Schon smoked him.

  • Yeah. Amazing how the most famed musicians are not always the best musicians; rather, the best are often the most dedicated, fame notwithstanding.

  • totally agrree with 5150dallan

  • phil is simply one of the most breathtaking guitarist of the past 35 yrs, I put him up with Eric johnson or Carlos santana anyday.

  • Horizons777 I totally agree, I've been playing for 40 years. This song brings tears to my eyes everytime I hear it

  • Jesus is the Master, and Phil is the musican!

  • i've been a guitarist for over 30 years..and this takes one's breath away...simply anointed.

  • no one can play like phil!

  • he is the man.

  • This is my favorite Phil Keaggy instrumental! "The Wind And The Wheat" has such beautiful music. Phil Keaggy rocks my world, and I love his Zion guitar!

  • beautiful. this music makes me cry

  • Incredible playing. Phil is super! Thank you!

  • Sometimes you see videos titled "Insane Shred" I call Phil's "Sane Shredding." He utilizes multiple techniques, has an excellent ear for beauty, and doesn't wear you out with tedious shredding like Yngwie, et. al.

  • Never heard of him. Sounds good.

  • If I had to define Phil Keaggy musically, I'd say this: His greatest talent and gift, I believe, isn't just that he plays so well - its that he also knows exactly where and how to hang each note - as if he's decorating with the music. He's an artist more than a guitar player. He just paints with music.

  • Glad to hear that! I'm going to search more of him. Very kind of you to guide me! Cheers!!

  • His album Crimson And Blue is a personal favorite of mine. Many of his albums are very diverse. One may be pop, another might be classical, and another might be Satriani like rock such as this song. A true virtuoso.

  • Funny! A friend of mine, gtarplyr30yrs, sent me the Phil Keaggy's site on internet yesterday. We were chating about him. He sent me a song by him where he plays a kind of rumba, latin rythm. Very cool!!

  • Love 'Crimson' aswell...but I have a real soft spot for 'Sunday's Child'!!

  • Exactly. He is one of those rare musicians, just as Glenn Gould at the piano, for whom you can say that they are just musicians. The guitar just happens to be his instrument!

  • amazing,brilliant,really really love this one :)

  • playing with the finger and the plectrum of God, he could calm an army of sauls.

  • speechless

  • phil keaggy is simply amazing.......many people criticize him for not playing faster.....even though he is very capable of doing so......preferring more soulful, melodic pieces rather than technical songs filled with scales and what not..........and he isn't limited to that one style .

  • regarding the keaggy / holdsworth comments... phil bridges the acoustic-electric gap extremely well while allan chooses to focus on electric. as for being an early influence ? please refer to the holdsworth solo on "fred" recorded in 1975 and contained on the "believe it" release by tony williams lifetime. btw... the whole recording is great and waaay ahead of it's time. one of the original fusion bands along with weather report , rtf , mahavishnu orch.

  • This is one of my all time favorites. on electric guitar simply amazing soothing awesome!

  • sounds sweet

  • excellant

  • Ahhhhh!!!! Phil the master! Such delicate precision - melodically beautific and anthemic. Adds wicked toller coaster runs ending in groans on that low E string!! THEN, those sweet volume control switch swells!!!

  • CORRECTION - Hah! "roller coaster runs"

  • outstanding--

  • In response to the Alan Holdsworth comment:

Don't get me wrong, I revere AH as much as anybody. But Phil was playing that kind of amazing guitar as early as 1970 with his band, Glass Harp. I suppose he could have been influenced by Alan that early, but not much - since Alan was still fresh on the scene too. And who wasn't influenced by Alan later on!? :-)

Both are great and we're lucky to have them.

  • this song starts my day... its just victorious.

  • This guitar thing is brilliant!!

  • In the 60's Jimi Hendrix was asked what it was like to be the greatest guitar player on earth. He told the interviewer (all expletives deleted) that they were talking to the wrong guitar player, and that they should be listening to Phil Keaggy.

He still is the world's greatest.

Thank you Lord, for Phil Keaggy.

  • Isn't that an urban legend--the Hendrix story?

  • It is an urban legend that Keaggy denies as ever happening. I think Phil is the best anyway though.

  • This reminds me of Dan Rather's infamous Texas-Air-National-Guard memo, where the memo itself was a fake, but its contents were substantially true.

  • This is the lead off track from The Wind And The Wheat released in 1987. Phil was under the spell of Allan Holdsworth. The originator of this style of playing.

  • Allan Holdsworth! take it back mister....say your sorry.Phil is the best guitarist ever.

  • keaggy doesn't deny learning styles from anyone. in fact if you ask him he will gladly give all his credit to other players. thats how humble this guy is

  • This is the song that God plays at the cloud factory :)

  • Keaggy is amazing!!! Yes his music is other worldly he is a very devout Christian

  • Ahhh! I love this song...my dad use to own this on cassette and I use to borrow it all the time...ahhh, sweet.

  • tefcouun

I owned this on cassette, too, when I was in college. I bought it right after seeing Phil (and hearing his music) for the first time, in a concert held on my college campus. How old is your dad?

  • well, if my dad lived he would become 70 next December. And...he would have never heard this kind of music. Anyway, when was this song written?

  • I think this was written around 1986.

  • Does anybody know when was this song written???

  • 1981 - released on the album with the same name 1987

  • We can establish a simple upper bound on when the song was written. It was published no later than 1987. Therefore, it was written no later than 1987.

  • My dream is to see an IMAX movie featuring the Navy's Blue Devils set to this song.

  • Great memories driving to the Hollister ranch listening to this tape. Lifts me up in the heavens.

  • very flowing, like a cloud.... hehe i like it

  • There is something otherworldly about his music. Excellent.

  • This is very old by Keaggy. Way ahead of his time. This is one of my favorites songs.

  • nice instrumental!
